Blogger RSS Feeds

by Mike Levin SEO & Datamaster, 07/06/2006

So, it’s probably old news now, but Blogger is definitely and transparently now supporting RSS. I didn’t have to alter any Blogger settings, yet an RSS 2.0 file is being output into all of my blogger sites using rss.xml as the filename, and putting it in the same location as the atom file. So, for the HitTail site, the atom file is instructed to output to http://www.hittail.com/blog/atom.xml. But this file also exists now: http://www.hittail.com/blog/rss.xml. This is somewhat surprising because all my blog sites are FTPing the files into location, per the HitTailing SEO process, so that means Blogger is just automatically doing this, assuming it’s the right thing. Yes. Yes, it is.

Anyway, it’s important because everyone should probably go update their blogger settings about which data feed they’re advertising (the RSS one, of course), and update any little user interface widgets they have in navigation, such as the little orange XML link. And if you’re using any tools like PingOMatic to notify the blogosphere of your new posts, you may want to start pinging them with the RSS location instead of the ATOM one.
