Bookmarklets on iPhone - irony!

by Mike Levin SEO & Datamaster, 03/16/2009

One of the very technologies that would make the iPhone more useful is nearly impossible to use. I speak of bookmarklets–the JavaScript programs jammed into browser bookmarks to do useful things. It’s what del.icio.us used to get so popular, and what people today use to share on Facebook.

They are doubly useful on the iPhone because they can add missing features like “Find on Page”. But on the iPhone, they cannot be dragged onto a link toolbar the way they can be on a desktop. And the only reasonable way to get them into your iPhone bookmarks is with syncing with Safari bookmarks–something I just don’t do.

So, what’s the solution? You got me. I can imagine a few, but it will take a proof of concept (is there an iPhone equivalent of Ctrl+D?). After the JavaScript is worked out, a site would need to exist with a repository of the most popular bookmarklets.
