The tricky bit of the server move

by Mike Levin SEO & Datamaster, 05/02/2009

I’m up to the tricky bit of the server move. I’m leaving behind 2 servers that have a bunch of functions that need to be moved to the new location. Among them is a tracking system that was a predesessor to HitTail. Some Connors clients are actually still on it, so I need to keep it live, just modifying the app to not actually connect to the database. The GIF will still serve just fine. So I pull off all the application and files to move the apps. The big database machine is coming with us, so I don’t have to worry about moving SQL Server databases. But the IIS server is being left behind. So, I leave the old stuff in place until I do a DNS update. That will make the old, still-running machine ready to be wiped as the new machine at the colocation center comes online. That reminds me. There’s a BIND DNS server here that’s controlling Connor’s DNS. I might just do a zone dump of the data and re-establish Connors DNS on the HitTail DNS server. That will let us retire that old machine. I’ll need the Registrar login info for Connors to do that switch-over. Until then, the tracking gif will be serving, but no data being collected. No biggie. Page-loads won’t slow down, and that’s the important thing.
