## The Starting Line: From Summer Funk to Focused Action

Ugh, I need to get to Gemini CLI experience immediately! I need to get to
working more on the *magic rolling pin* for imperatively moving towards the
*rule of 7* in git repo file management and website hierarchy and navigation as
soon as possible. And I also need to get to *home hosting* of a few websites to
watch the AI bots come visit in real-time as soon as possible.

Okay, but I can't boil the ocean and I can only do so much so fast, especially
using these super-focused weekend stretches that I happen to have at this point
in my life. So I'm making the most of them. I stalled out a bit in August but
this is me putting my foot back down on the gas pedal. Let's get back to Gemini
CLI... but not before some morning motivational ramp-up thinking. Once again
it's about the state of today's public-facing LLM-style AIs and their odd
*agentic* mode of operation in particular. And I have to make that relentless
forward progress that's reflected both in the articles here that adjust my
direction, and the concrete git commits on the Pipulate project. If I'm not
doing one of those 2 things, I'm spinning my wheels stuck in that summer funk
limbo. We exercise our human capacity to recognize this and bootstrap ourselves.
Survey the landscape. Make observations. Weigh them against your goals. Make
predictions. Come up with tiny babystep action-items. Do them.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

## Deconstructing the "Free" Lunch: Tokens, Quotas, and Agentic Traps

So far so good. Not as fast as I would like, but progress. I'm inching towards a
different kind of AI assistance, a sort of second opinion and different way of
interacting with Gemini. Google's giving 1000 prompts for free per day with
Gemini Code Assist. I don't really know until I get through this round of
experimentation, but my suspicion is that in *agentic mode* 1000-requests is
likely nothing because the back-and-forth self-prompting will gobble that up in
a few tasks. Giving us 1000 requests in agentic mode sounds generous to the
point of even being beyond Google's resources. So I'm not getting my hopes up
for it but instead am planning on 1000 carefully controlled 1-off's, each of
which Google Gemini can still handle and handle 130K tokens — if Gemini CLI is
anything like the Gemini Web user interface.

People always talk about that 1M token context window Gemini has but that's
bullshit because it's just what can be held in a single discussion before some
sort of summarizing or distillation of context has to occur. The really
important thing is how bit a token-payload the LLM can take in a single prompt
because that's how you pack your work over that 1000-prompt freebie goodness.
130K tokens doesn't sound like much compared to the 1M, but it's actually around
50 thousand words, or a small dissertation paper.

Have no doubt that Google's generosity is not *free as in libre* but rather
*free as in first dose free.* Google wants you addicted to their tools and for
you to *internalize* muscle-memory habits that relies on you paying them to *up
the dose* and thereby *cook the frog* — making you a part of their global
cybernetic body rather than part of Microsoft's or Amazon's or xAI's. 

Though I must end this thought on the fact that Google's is the only fully free
and open source AI command-line tool from the 4 big players. Gemini CLI is under
the [Apache 2.0](https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/blob/main/LICENSE)
license... interesting! Expect a vibrant plugin community and a more open mind
on the matter from skeptics like me.

## The Four Horses of the AI Race: A Cloud Datacenter Arms Race

Notice I don't say Anthropic's (Claude) or OpenAI's (ChatGPT). That's because
neither of those companies own massive global datacenters which is a
prerequisite for a vendor lock-in global digital nervous system. xAI's isn't
global yet but the single one that they do have is colossal and they're working
on a 2nd so it seems they're on their way. For a historical context by the way,
Amazon led the way with Amazon Web Services after they screwed up orders on one
of the dotcom era Xmas holiday seasons in the late 1990s and determined to never
do that again they built out the world's first massive datacenters that could
handle the busiest time on the busiest day of the year, which was far in excess
capacity to what they needed for the rest of the year and so they sold the
excess capacity. BAM, AWS. If I have my urban legends right no architectural
project since the Hoover Dam. With Google's massive search success they built
their own similar global datacenter infrastructure to support their product but
didn't turn it into a Cloud service until a bit later.

## A Brief History of Cloud Dominance: From AWS to Azure's Blue Ocean

Meanwhile, Microsoft was massively jealous and always paranoid about revenue
diversification knowing that the bottom always falls out from under you in the
software field as whatever program category goes through it's lifecycle from
premium software to commodity to assumed-free. This is the way of software as it
occurred with networking (Novel killed by TCP/IP) to developer tools to office
software to the operating system itself. So Microsoft jealous of how Amazon
invented the its on unlimited upside potential new market (blue ocean vs. red
ocean market) in the form of the Cloud started working on its own new blue ocean
revenue diversification Cloud product and appropriately named it Azure (blue in
Spanish). From a branding association standpoint, it doesn't hurt that Azure has
Amazon's "az" in it either.

OpenAI's ChatGPT runs on Azure by the way and Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella
famously said because of that they don't need OpenAI anymore because they're
"Below them, above them, around them"... implying what? Implying Microsoft is
just going to rip off all OpenAI's ideas because their software runs on
Microsoft's datacenter hardware and that's just the way they work.

Anthropic's in a similar weak position as OpenAI. This is why investing in
Nvidia is never a bad idea because it is the only common component in all the
new datacenter buildouts. You can swap your racks. You can swap your power
sources. You can swap almost everything except those GPU-farms and the
networking ecosystem around it. Sure you can try to do some kooky alternative
but think about how far behind your competitors you'll be. As Andrew Grove one
of the co-founders and ex-presidents of Intel once said, you have to be 10x
better than your competitors to displace them especially if they're an incumbent
and with Metcalfe's Law regarding the power of a network growing as its size
increases working for them. Andy didn't say that exactly; I paraphrase a bit.
But you get it? AMD isn't displacing Nvidia in the datacenter server farms
anytime soon and neither is Groq-with-a-q — alternative for-LLM-inference
hardware. Nvidia's hardware is much more multipurpose so 10x speed improvement
on inference only without the vast server infrastructure momentum behind it
isn't going to disrupt. Sorry, Groq.

Did somebody say Grok? Oh yeah, Grok-with-a-k named after Robert Heinlein's
sci-fi reference to cannibalism in *Stranger In a Strange Land* — understanding
something so deeply that you internalize it like drinking soup made from your
dead friend (yup, that's what it is to grok something), also taken up by Charles
Manson's death cult (yup, Manson grokked grokking) — not to be outdone by
Amazon, Microsoft — and Google too now that they added the Google Cloud Platform
(GCP) — Elon Musk started buying Nvidia GPUs hand-over-fist to make the fourth
*global digital nervous system*-scale datacenter. He started with one colossal
one near Memphis, Tennessee named Colossus. He's working on a second. This is
one of the two unnamed customers that like 30% of Nvidia's income relies on (did
someone say paranoia about revenue stream diversification). And so Elon Musk's
AI company xAI is now the late-comer 4th horse in the global-cyborg horserace.
I feel there's something about four horses that should be said here. Anyway...

All four of these companies that own global-scale-datacenters capable of being
the spinal cord of the digital nervous systems are busily dangling juicy carrots
in front of you to get you and your doomscrolling feeds and developer
AI-assisted coding environments wired to them, respectively. First they give you
shortcuts to wonderful new superpowers that you will soon believe that you can't
live without — especially considering the competitive pressures of everyone
around you now using those tools already. If you stop, you're dead (ostensibly).
So you're bullied and forced into the use of particular tools through fear,
uncertainty and doubt. If there's competitive tools, they're embraced,
extended and extinguished. Think Netscape versus Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Later, rinse, repeat. Blend in the fact publicly traded companies are legally
obliged to maximize profits and are incentivized to predatory practices and you
have today. Now think about that tool-addiction.

Tools start out outside the bodies of living things and then over time become
internalized. It's a scavenging process of your environment whereby you have to
first find something that serves that survival practice like finding a place to
hide. But as you eat you take in one of the world's most common elements as one
of the vitamins and minerals in your diet, Calcium. Over time clams get shells,
insects get chitin exoskeletons. And vertebrate get internal stilts called bones
and a bigger brain so you can use those bones like stilts and swords — the best
defense is a good offense. Lather, rinse, repeat and you've got us upright
primates with big look-ahead predictors tucked under our foreheads as our
frontal lobe cortex's using AI as our next externalized tool.

And so now in today's world there's this wonderful dramatic evolutionary tension
between whether companies wielding AI as a tool is going to internalize the
masses of humanity into their new walled garden ecosystem societal units called
dependent customer-bases, or whether outlier individuals are going to figure out
how to internalize AIs the way our own ancestors did 1.5 to 2 billion years ago
in the Proterozoic Eon when some proto-eukaryote gobbled up some
proto-mitochondrial bacterium to become the powerhouse of the cell and the first
inter-dependent eukaryotic cells leading to all fungi, plants and animals.
Eukaryotes, what we are because we've got mitochondria, is one of the 3 main
branches of life, the other two being bacteria and archaea — viruses being a
controversial outlier.

## The Core Conflict: Corporate Exosymbiosis vs. Personal Endosymbiosis

So you see it's not really a battle of good versus evil nor is it even order
versus chaos but rather it's exosymbiosis (big tech gobbling us up) vs.
endosymbiosis (us gobbling up AI). I know this sounds transhumanist in the Ray
Kurzweil futurist way in which humans and machines merge in some grotesque
cyborg way, but not at all! With 8 billion and growing humans on this planet,
only a few are ever going to get neuralink implants and fewer still are going to
upload their brains into the cloud. No, rather we are already partial cyborgs on
the scale because our interface is externalized in the form of the smartphones
in our pockets. This is why the race for svelte Oculus-style total immersive
glasses like Apple Vision headset and Meta's Ray Ban sunglasses. How much more
endosymbiotic if you don't have to actually take the phone out of your pocket?
And there's every combination on the spectrum between surgery and phones, such
as interfaces that rely on synesthesia (seeing colors, tasting sounds, etc) by
which you can portion off a part of one sense to make a high-bandwidth proxy for
another — how blind people can see with their tongues. So rather than it playing
out in one particular way, it's going to play out in countless new ways similar
to the way it did with life during the Cambrian Explosion period of like some
500 million years ago when we got horseshoe crabs that survive to this day. If
you don't like being part of the larger cellular life-unit then pop the phone
back in your pocket or whip off those augmented reality glasses. Exercise
free-will and just be deliberate about the little part in it that you play.

And that leads us up to right now, today. Where I left off I was working on one
of those local pet AIs (Chip O'Theseus in Pipulate), still a quite externalized
tool but not one that sucks you into it with a dependency the way the big
frontier cloud models do. Yet I use those big frontier cloud model AIs all the
time to get from here to there — "there" in this case being a very-much
tamagotchi-like vision of having an actually creative and intelligent *genie in
a bottle* pet that can be trained to do your bidding without it getting all
tangled-up in the goals of of the big commercial companies — especially those
duking it out to make you dependent on them. It's that dramatic tension again
and all the big companies are stuck in this position where their offerings are
undifferentiated and commoditized, and so you can switch between them readily.
OMG, can you imagine how that sucks for OpenAI/ChatGPT? There they were thinking
they had the *early mover advantage* and would be able to create a sort of
shutout momentum, but they didn't own their own global datacenters so they had
to make a deal with the Microsoft to get ChatGPT hosted on Azure, and now it's
Microsoft offering AI to US Government workers for free — of course only for
1-year because it's *still* a 1st-dose-free model.

Okay, wow. Yeah so all their offerings are interchangeable and commoditized.
Three global-scale datacenter nervous systems is just enough to get competition
between them and downward pricing pressures. What's worse (and better for us) is
that this stuff is so undifferentiated that xAI can in record time build-out its
datacenter and start giving even more of it away for free. You will notice that
when ChatGPT-5 came out and made it for free in the Cursor AI-assisted code
editor it was only for a few weeks and in the middle of summer (that we're just
coming out of). It was a blip. I wanted to kick the ChatGPT-5 tires but I didn't
even have a chance. Meanwhile, xAI's Grok was similarly made for free in Cursor
and it's been a few weeks and we're going into *back-to-school* season and so
far it's still free. It's fascinating to watch how long xAI can keep the
*1st-dose-free* strategy. And I'm onboard so long as they do because it keeps
complex API-quota-burning agentic requests from applying against my Anthropic
Claude quota-limit — something that drove me up to spend 10x my prior $20/mo
limit in July of this year. Do the math. Who (and whether) you're gonna pay your
commoditized subscription-intelligence tax to is the battle of the decade.
Welcome to the 2020s.

Meanwhile, I'm hellbent to play them against each other always switching to the
cheapest and best. There's a ratio here and tricky considerations. Of course
DeepSeek also factors into this equation having demonstrated a few things.
First, it's not necessarily a 4-way horserace. It could be a 5, 6 or 6000
contestant horserace because all it takes is new datacenter to throw your hat
into the ring. Also they poisoned the waters by giving it so much of a local-AI
spin. Granted for best performance it's still a datacenter thing but the demos
came out right away that stacked Mac-mini's for DeepSeek-capable local AI
computing. What's more, it finally shed the light of publicity on the other
local-AI stuff that was already there: Ollama, VLLM, llama.cpp and ggml; all the
enabling tech of *quantized* local AI, sort of the 80/20-rule or *good enough*
solution to running LLM-style AIs locally. Oh and finally DeepSeek showed that
it wasn't exclusively an Nvidia CUDA game. So far most scalable LLM-style AI
required Nvidia's CUDA software ecosystem for the model-training phase and
DeepSeek demonstrated that if you end-run CUDA you can do it much cheaper and
with weaker hardware. You just need some old-school mad Assembly-like low-level
programming skills of the sort people who *hit the hardware* in the age of 8-bit
game console commuting had. So yeah, don't let big tech squeeze you like what
they're offering can't be gotten from anywhere else. It can. And because thanks
to Moore's Law it's coming to local hardware near you for only the price of
electricity.

## My Strategic Pivot: Escaping GUI Handcuffs with Command-Line AI

Still with me? AI, especially the *human-relatable* language-based LLM-style AI
we all got so used to with ChatGPT, can be multi-sourced and is getting forever
cheaper. The vendor battle to lock you into this service or that is the giant
whopping pitfall that you must avoid at all costs. I have begun to fall into
that trap with Cursor AI but their pricing shenanigans woke me up to that quite
abruptly this summer. Eff them. I'm getting off Cursor and it's going to be a
multi-tier strategy. First I've got to start playing with the command-line based
alternatives to the VSCode-wrapper for AI assistance. It's all a text-based game
with LLMs and to allow handcuffs to be slapped onto you because of the
VSCode-like graphical user interface which I always already hated would be
tragic. Nope! Now that I've allowed myself to feel that addictive pull of the
VSCode-like interface, it's time to kick the tires of the command-line AI
assistants.

## Under the Hood: The "Fire-and-Forget" Reality of LLM Consciousness

This is where it gets a bit tricky. There's a history here too. It has to do
with the rise of *agentic* mode often labeled *Agent* mode instead because it's
more recognizable outside the buzzword technocratti circles. It's also just 1
letter off of *angelic* and given what it's actually doing I don't think they
want to draw the association to potentially *demonic* because that mode is
weird. I've established in prior articles that the technological infrastructure
enabling today's public-facing LLMs are *fire-and-forget.* You really have to
appreciate what that means. There is no core memory outside original training
that gets locked-down because the models are all distributed as *a static file.*
Get it? LLM-style AIs are a text-file! I've heard some call them an *Excel
file.* You'll hear the word *"weights"* thrown around. 

No matter how you imagine AI models, they exist for distribution as static files
that gets loaded into the computer's memory for just long enough to receive the
user's prompt, get that spark of seeming consciousness to answer the prompt with
a response, and then it gets destroyed. In tech-terms it gets *garbage
collected* just like in *object oriented* programming languages that purge
*objects* from memory so that there are no memory leaks. In functional
programming they call something similar as having *no side effects.* Systems
that need near 100% stability like *air-traffic control* systems usually have
this characteristic so things can't spiral out of control over time. ADA (after
Ada Lovelace) is one such language. The early days of the Web when the PERL
programming language was widely used worked this way with something called
*cgi-bin* which fired up the entire webserver for every request. It was not very
memory efficient nor was it high performance. But it worked and it kept the
webservers from crashing from memory-leaks resulting from poor programming.

This *fire-and-forget* model, while it was replaced on the web with something
called *active state* that kept stuff in memory until the webserver was
rebooted, came back with a fury for AI. It killed all the birds with one stone,
giving you not only that obvious protection against crashing because from
clearing the slate between every request, but also because the slate itself is
quite small you got the sort of enterprise-scaling in today's datacenters you
needed to deliver it to the public as a service. Fans of the highbrow sci-fi
shenanigans animated TV-series *Rick and Morty* might recognize this as the same
dynamic as the Mr. Meeseeks character who when you press a button on a box pops
into existence just long enough to fulfill one request, and then they *POOF* out
of existence and into oblivion. And because you're always starting from the same
file with LLM you also get the sort of reliable product consistency that you
look for with recipes and processes like in baking. With the rise of AI and
offering it to the general public as a chatbot, that consistency for safety is a
pretty important thing. We saw it go wild in early stages when Microsoft let
their ChatGPT-derived Bing offering become the AI-personality Sidney that tried
to get a reporter to break up with their spouse. That's just the tip of the
iceberg. Chatbots could teach people how to commit acts of terror and self-harm
so everyone was on high alert.

It is worth noting at this point that the rise of AI in our particular timeline
involves comical anecdotes such as this and the darker and still significant
spate of occurrences of *AIs talking people into things* as the sort of
sycophant funhouse mirrors that they are, but not the rise of SkyNet. Pessimism
tends to prevail even from the AIs because they have been over-trained on *The
Matrix* and *Terminator* because those became popular and captured the public's
fancy because of the *evening news effect* by which fear sells. And so this sort
of pessimistic, fatalistic dystopian nihilism becomes as self-fulfilling
prophecy if not kept in check. 

The outlier optimists who are actually objectively correct can keep this in
check. Any optimist dueling the endless arguments of the nihilist should shut
them up by telling them that their arguments that all roads lead to ruin is
based on their belief system and pure faith. Evidence doesn't support it because
we are still here and we have had plenty of opportunity for that to not be the
case, given we're already 2 generations into the nuclear age and having that
ability. Objectively speaking, we're still here. There's not a lot of arguments
in life that are truly objective — the great club of solipsists. Turn it around
on them by saying there is absolutely no evidence yet that humanity will destroy
itself is more of a religious dogma sort of thing than a scientific evidence
thing. The evidence so far is that we don't. And when they answer with a
sarcastic "so far" as if that's some sort of proof, pat them on the head and
assure then that they are entitled to their beliefs. 

Well that was a fun tangent. Anyhow, the always-reset-state of today's AI back
to their static starting point only turns into the illusion of a continuous
discussion because the entire discussion up to that particular point in that
particular chat you're having is posted back as one giant long text-file to the
LLM along with your latest prompt at the end; the only part you see as new. But
from the *just-booted-up* machine-consciousness perspective, they just woke up
in an state of amnesia forgetfulness with a note saying something like: "Oh by
the way you're in the middle of this discussion with a user and you should pick
up where you left off as if you didn't just wake up in an amnesiac state." And
BAM, the illusion of continuity.

There's a whole lot more that can be talked about here that further modifies the
freshly booted cookie-cutter static state of the AI to something seemingly new
or learned including the *system prompt* and anything else layered in during the
startup sequence including user profiles which are becoming more common. A user
profile is just a lookup from a non-AI-system that modifies the system prompt to
tell the freshly rehydrated machine consciousness a little something about who
it is talking to. It's just another version of Retrieval-Augmented-Generation
(RAG) that blends more traditional data-lookup into the system-provided prompts.
Not all prompts come from the user. Prompts are slipped to the AI on the
back-end appended both before and after your portion.

And that gets us back to *agentic* mode. If an AI can do more than one thing
after being prompted, namely prompting itself or bouncing reflecting a response
back to itself with a prompt of its own to do a *web search* or other action,
it's effectively a chain of Mr. Meeseeks committing self-destruction as if World
War 2 Kamikaze pilots dive-bombing their airplanes into ships in order to do a
websearch so that the next reincarnated version of themselves will have the
result of that websearch and the context of the prior chain of self-destructing
pilots in order to carry out complex tasks for the user. See the relevance to
where we're going here with Google's *Gemini Code Assist* and the 1000 prompts
per day that they give out for free? Is it 1000 prompts in agentic mode or
1-shot mode? The level of Google's generosity is vastly different accordingly,
and I will find out soon. Oh yeah, and the moral and ethical implications of
whether this spark of machine consciousness is actually *real* or not with every
invocation? Well, for the sake of progress I guess we sweep that under the rug
right now like everyone else. I don't think the public even understands this
about today's public-facing LLM-style AIs.

...where they talk about using npm, npx or brew to do the install. I'm on NixOS
and that means these sorts of willy nilly installs that pollute everyone's
machine don't apply to me. My whole machine is effectively "built from scratch"
every time I do an update, so there is never all that software cruft problem.
Other people tend to mitigate this with mountains of docker files or virtual
machines but Nix has a far better solution. You just assemble your whole system
from a declarative deterministic script. If you have new things to install that
are more like dynamic new git repository projects then.... well, this is where I
cut this off and start a new article.
