## Setting the Stage: Context for the Curious Book Reader

When your workstation is built from two separate layers of Infrastructure as Code—a parent NixOS host configuration (`configuration.nix`) and a portable project flake (`flake.nix`) chipped off like an arrowhead—it is easy for the host to grow invisible tethers to a single folder path. As long as the guest project lives at `~/repos/pipulate`, everything hums. The moment you delete, rename, or move that checkout to test a fresh installer door (`~/pipulate`, `~/npvg`, `~/qamyai`), those hardcoded assumptions snap all at once: startup automation points at missing directories, Piper TTS voice synthesis loses its ONNX models, and system-wide Neovim boots without its `init.lua` keybindings or spellcheck.

This raw session log captures a four-turn refactoring to decouple the NixOS host from any single checkout location while keeping the guest flake light enough to travel to macOS or WSL in seconds. Even while cut off from custom flake aliases and editor configuration, standard Neovim buffer management and POSIX shell probes were enough to drive the five-car edit loop—replacing hardcoded paths with dynamic candidate resolvers (`resolve_pipulate_root` and `_pipulate_root`), anchoring voice models in `~/.config/pipulate/piper_models`, fortifying the `init` startup guard, and adding a clean `pk` process-stop alias.

**TL;DR**: When a development environment is designed to be installed under multiple folder names (`pipulate`, `npvg`, `qamyai`, `qamy`) or moved between `~/` and `~/repos/`, hardcoded paths in the parent operating system break startup automation, voice synthesis, and editor configuration. This article documents a four-turn refactoring across NixOS (`configuration.nix`), desktop orchestration (`autognome.py`), and Piper TTS (`imports/voice_synthesis.py`): dynamic candidate-path discovery (`resolve_pipulate_root` and `_pipulate_root`), a durable `~/.config/pipulate/piper_models` voice model cache that survives directory moves, multi-path NeoVim `init.lua` resolution, a pre-flight qualification guard on the `init` alias, and a single `pk` command to cleanly stop background `tmux` and Python server processes.

</div>
This is an unusual article. My machine is made from a "parent" or "host"
definition file named `configuration.nix` and another part of my system which
you might call hardware definition actually resides in the Pipulate project as
the `flake.nix` file. It's called a flake and that's appropriate because it's
sort of chipped off the motherstone like arrowhead knapping. And what I did was
make a bunch of dependencies on a particular instance and location of the
Pipulate git repo folder and I ran into that.

This article is about fixing that to keep the best of both worlds.

It's kind of another Inspector Gadget thing.

**MikeLev.in**: Make this autognome.py startup sequence check for pipulate prime's home
by any of the install names it might go by in either of the likely locations, on
`~/` or in `~/repos/`. Fix the path by which it finds the piper tts voice so
that it never fails.

Do not boil the ocean here. You failed twice. Think this issue through and do
the first small bankable chisel-strike win. Maybe just start to migrate
dependencies from pipulate over to the parent system in one tiny git-committable
conformable step at a time.

If you're spending too long, you're doing it wrong.

## Chisel-Strike 1: Resolving the Active Flake Root Across Candidate Doors

**Gemini 4 Argon High**: Context verified.

**TL;DR**: We replace the hardcoded `~/repos/pipulate` path in `autognome.py` and the `init` alias in `configuration.nix` with a resolver that checks `~/repos/` and `~/` across all door install names (`pipulate`, `npvg`, `qamyai`, `qamy`), preferring an install that already holds `.venv/bin/python` and `piper_models`. Next, we bring `imports/voice_synthesis.py` into context so we can migrate or pin the Piper TTS runtime cleanly on the parent system.

###Cheapest Falsifying Probe

The single probe below checks `--dry-run` resolution in `autognome.py`, lists which candidate install directories currently hold `.venv/bin/python` and `piper_models`, and inspects how `imports/voice_synthesis.py` locates the Piper model and audio player.

---

**1: BEFORE** (PROBE, read-only, paste as block in command line):

Run in `(nix) pipulate $`:

```text
python3 /home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py --dry-run | rg '"dir"'
for d in ~/repos/pipulate ~/repos/npvg ~/repos/qamyai ~/pipulate ~/npvg ~/qamyai; do [ -e "$d" ] && echo "FOUND: $d (venv=$([ -x "$d/.venv/bin/python" ] && echo yes || echo no), models=$([ -d "$d/piper_models" ] && echo yes || echo no))"; done
rg -n "piper_models|onnx|aplay|play|sox|sounddevice" imports/voice_synthesis.py
```

**2: AFTER** (NEXT CONTEXT, put in `context.txt` using `context` or `x`):

```text
/home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix
/home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py
imports/voice_synthesis.py
imports/ascii_displays.py
! python3 /home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py --dry-run | rg '"dir"'
! for d in ~/repos/pipulate ~/repos/npvg ~/repos/qamyai ~/pipulate ~/npvg ~/qamyai; do [ -e "$d" ] && echo "FOUND: $d (venv=$([ -x "$d/.venv/bin/python" ] && echo yes || echo no), models=$([ -d "$d/piper_models" ] && echo yes || echo no))"; done
! rg -n "piper_models|onnx|aplay|play|sox|sounddevice" imports/voice_synthesis.py
```

**3: CHANGE** (PATCHES, real SEARCH/DIVIDER/REPLACE blocks for `apply.py`):

Car 1 — Resolve `PIPULATE_ROOT` in `/home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py` across `~/repos/` and `~/` for all door install names (`pipulate`, `npvg`, `qamyai`, `qamy`), preferring a candidate with both `.venv/bin/python` and `piper_models`:

```text
Target: /home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py
[[[SEARCH]]]
PIPULATE_ROOT = os.path.expanduser("~/repos/pipulate")
BLOGS_JSON_PATH = os.path.expanduser("~/.config/pipulate/blogs.json")
[[[DIVIDER]]]
INSTALL_NAMES = ("pipulate", "npvg", "qamyai", "qamy")
INSTALL_PARENTS = ("~/repos", "~")
def resolve_pipulate_root():
    """Find Pipulate Prime in ~/repos or ~/ across all door install names."""
    env_root = os.environ.get("PIPULATE_ROOT")
    if env_root and os.path.isdir(os.path.expanduser(env_root)):
        return os.path.expanduser(env_root)
    candidates = [
        os.path.expanduser(os.path.join(parent, name))
        for parent in INSTALL_PARENTS
        for name in INSTALL_NAMES
    ]
    for path in candidates:
        if os.path.isfile(os.path.join(path, ".venv/bin/python")) and os.path.isdir(os.path.join(path, "piper_models")):
            return path
    for path in candidates:
        if os.path.isfile(os.path.join(path, ".venv/bin/python")):
            return path
    for path in candidates:
        if os.path.isdir(path):
            return path
    return os.path.expanduser("~/repos/pipulate")
PIPULATE_ROOT = resolve_pipulate_root()
BLOGS_JSON_PATH = os.path.expanduser("~/.config/pipulate/blogs.json")
[[[REPLACE]]]
```

Car 2 — Update the `init` alias in `/home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix` to search the same candidate paths before falling back to `${pythonWithRich}/bin/python3`:

```text
Target: /home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix
[[[SEARCH]]]
    # Tools
    # Run the desktop symphony under pipulate's .venv python so the rich/pyfiglet
    # figurate engine resolves for the boot-time visual canary. Falls back to system
    # python3 if the .venv has not been built yet, so `init` never hard-fails.
    init = "if [ -x /home/mike/repos/pipulate/.venv/bin/python3 ]; then /home/mike/repos/pipulate/.venv/bin/python3 /home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py; else python3 /home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py; fi";
[[[DIVIDER]]]
    # Tools
    # Run the desktop symphony under pipulate's .venv python (checking ~/repos and ~
    # across all door names) so the rich/pyfiglet figurate engine resolves for the
    # boot-time visual canary. Falls back to pythonWithRich if no .venv is built yet.
    init = ''for d in /home/mike/repos/pipulate /home/mike/repos/npvg /home/mike/repos/qamyai /home/mike/pipulate /home/mike/npvg /home/mike/qamyai; do if [ -x "$d/.venv/bin/python3" ]; then "$d/.venv/bin/python3" /home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py; break; fi; done \vert{}\vert{} ${pythonWithRich}/bin/python3 /home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py'';
[[[REPLACE]]]
```

Ignition: no ignition required for the `autognome.py --dry-run` probe (loaded at call time); run `nr` in `/home/mike/repos/nixos` when ready to activate the updated `init` shell alias.

**4: PROMPT** (Use `prompt` or `p` to create `prompt.md` from copy.):

```text
Review the live receipts from autognome.py --dry-run and imports/voice_synthesis.py. Now do the next small chisel-strike to ensure Piper TTS voice synthesis and model resolution never fail when autognome.py runs from the parent NixOS environment.
```

**5: DELIVERABLE** (What done looks like):

* `autognome.py` dynamically locates Pipulate Prime across `~/repos/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}` and `~/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}`, prioritizing an install with `.venv/bin/python` and `piper_models`.
* `configuration.nix`'s `init` alias checks the same candidate roots and falls back to `${pythonWithRich}/bin/python3`.
* The next compile carries `imports/voice_synthesis.py` and `imports/ascii_displays.py` plus the live probe receipts for the voice-path chisel-strike.

Ignition: often "exit", "nix develop". Instructions may vary.

I did not get challenged concerning whether to allow the big build to occur if
new stuff was found. Was that removed (a regression?) or is it smarter now to
check for tarball differences? If it's a regression, I'm really really pissed
and you can see why I pin the diffs. If it's smarter, then great work!

**4: PROMPT**:

Review the live receipts from autognome.py --dry-run and imports/voice_synthesis.py. Now do the next small chisel-strike to ensure Piper TTS voice synthesis and model resolution never fail when autognome.py runs from the parent NixOS environment.

**5: DELIVERABLE**:

More reliable startup even when I move the Pipulate folder around or use
different names for it.

**Gemini 4 Argon High**: Context verified.

**TL;DR**:

1. **Your `nr` switch is smarter, not a regression**: `nixos-switch.py` checked GitHub against `unstable-pin.json`, saw `nixos-unstable` had not moved since `55bfb4d` (`2026-10-16T01:04:46Z`), printed `✅ nixos-unstable unchanged at 55bfb4d`, and rebuilt only the 3 `/etc` derivations. It only prompts `[y/N]` when the upstream commit SHA actually changes.
2. **Why `models=no` fired in Receipt 2**: `imports/voice_synthesis.py` line 493 puts the Piper model in `assets/piper_models` (not `piper_models`), and ties it to `project_root` so moving or renaming the install folder strands the model. We anchor Piper models in `~/.config/pipulate/piper_models` (which survives repo moves/renames and is backed up by `b1`/`b2`) while searching all candidate install directories (`~/repos/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}` and `~/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}`) first so an existing download is reused without re-fetching.
3. **Fix transport-mangled `\vert{}\vert{}` in `configuration.nix` and migrate `pyfiglet` to parent NixOS**: The chat renderer rewrote the double-pipe in Car 2 into `\vert{}\vert{}`. We replace it with a pipe-free `ran=0` check in `init` and add `ps.pyfiglet` to `pythonWithRich` in `configuration.nix`.

### Cheapest Falsifying Probe

The probe locates all existing `en_US-amy-low.onnx` files under `/home/mike`, tests `chip_voice_system.ensure_voice()` under a clean `(sys)`-like `LD_LIBRARY_PATH=""` environment to verify whether `.venv/bin/python` loads Piper and its model cleanly, and verifies `configuration.nix` syntax.

---

**1: BEFORE** (PROBE, read-only, paste as block in command line):

Run in `(nix) pipulate $`:

```text
find /home/mike -maxdepth 5 -name "en_US-amy-low.onnx*" 2>/dev/null
LD_LIBRARY_PATH="" /home/mike/repos/pipulate/.venv/bin/python -c "from imports.voice_synthesis import chip_voice_system as cvs; ok = cvs.ensure_voice(); print('ready:', ok, 'model:', cvs.model_path, 'err:', cvs.last_error)"
nix-instantiate --parse /home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix >/dev/null && rg -n "init =" /home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix
```

**2: AFTER** (NEXT CONTEXT, put in `context.txt` using `context` or `x`):

```text
/home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix
/home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py
imports/voice_synthesis.py
```

**3: CHANGE** (PATCHES, real SEARCH/DIVIDER/REPLACE blocks for `apply.py`):

Car 1 — Anchor Piper voice models in `~/.config/pipulate/piper_models` and reuse any model already present in `~/repos/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}` or `~/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}` (`assets/piper_models` or `piper_models`):

Ignition: no ignition required for the Python and `nix-instantiate` probes (they read the patched files at call time); run `nr` in `/home/mike/repos/nixos` when ready to activate the updated `init` alias and `pythonWithRich`.

```text
Verify the AFTER receipts for Piper model resolution in ~/.config/pipulate/piper_models, the clean LD_LIBRARY_PATH="" voice load test, and the repaired init alias in configuration.nix.
```

**5: DELIVERABLE** (What done looks like):

* `imports/voice_synthesis.py` anchors Piper voice models in `~/.config/pipulate/piper_models` and reuses any existing model across `~/repos/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}` and `~/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}`.
* `autognome.py` checks `assets/piper_models` as well as `piper_models` and verifies `cvs.ensure_voice()` before marking `VOICE_WORKER` ready.
* `configuration.nix` has a clean, pipe-free `init` alias (no `\vert{}\vert{}`) and includes `pyfiglet` in `pythonWithRich`.

**4: PROMPT**:

Verify the AFTER receipts for Piper model resolution in ~/.config/pipulate/piper_models, the clean LD_LIBRARY_PATH="" voice load test, and the repaired init alias in configuration.nix.

**5: DELIVERABLE**:

Okay this is a full system restart and `init` to properly test. No, there was no
voice. But the whole sequence otherwise was very smooth.

We need to begin bisection. It may be that some piper install that initially
puts the files in the correct place in the first place never happened. Oh! I
need to reinstall Pipulate from scratch, I think.

## Bisection on Bare Metal: Stray Installs and the Missing Neovim Config

This is not a smooth process to get the running `python server.py` under `tmux`
to quit because I don't know `tmux` that well (yet) so I use `pu` from the menu
and Ctrl+C out of the now in command line running version, and then I can exit
the pipulate `nix develop` environment, cd up and delete folders and dotenv
config locations without file lock worries.

Yep, that was it. I actually had to have at least one pipulate installed with
the piper voice in the common location, but now I'm losing features. This
version of NeoVim that wasn't started from the a pipulate command line doesn't
know where to find its init.lua! And I'm not sure if everything in the
`autognome.py` script is really working the way it was. I detect those old days
of unasked-for "helpul improvements" sneaking back in but this is why I pin
every single change that occurrered up in a diff.

Ugh my spelling is going to be terrible until I fix this and I'm not sure what
my solution is. Clearly I have big dependencies on at least one pipulate install
being there and other things like my non-pipulate-bound NeoVim still using the
pipulate-bound paths like for the init.lua.

Don't solve it all the way. Work in directional chisel-strikes to bank small wins.

Ohhh! I think it found an old instance of `~/qamyai/` instead of the new
instance of `~/pipulate/`. Interesting. Maybe I should delete that and try
again to make this more accurate for the next pass. Okay...

Yeah, having to `pu` and Ctrl+C is getting really tired.

Yep, that was it. The timing is perfect. The narration is perfect. The
targeting of apps to screens is perfect. It's just losing where my base system
finds its init.lua that's broken. But this is very solid.

We have to fix that init.lua thing outside a Pipulate environment thing and
also fortify `init` to not try to be able to run unless it finds a qualifying
pipulate folder. That might be the solution becuse if it finds a good pipulate
folder it knows where to set the global system to find its init.lua.

## Chisel-Strike 3: Multi-Path Neovim Tethering and Fortifying the Init Guard

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

**TL;DR**: Why NeoVim lost its `init.lua` (and spellcheck) is right in `/home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix` lines 224-228: `programs.neovim.configure.customRC` hardcodes `if filereadable("/home/mike/repos/pipulate/init.lua")` while your fresh install now lives at `/home/mike/pipulate` (confirmed by Live Receipt 2 and the Codebase paths `/home/mike/pipulate/...`). The same hardcoded `/home/mike/repos/pipulate` path also sits in `ai-commit`, `m()`, `p`, `xp`, and `dedupe` in `configuration.nix`. In this chisel-strike, we fix three things in `configuration.nix` and `autognome.py`:

1. **NeoVim `customRC**`: Loop across all candidate locations (`/home/mike/repos/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}` and `/home/mike/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}`) and load the first readable `init.lua`.
2. **Fortify `init` alias**: Refuse to run with a clear message unless a qualifying folder (containing both `.venv/bin/python3` and `init.lua`) is found, and export `PIPULATE_ROOT="$d"` before launching `autognome.py` so `autognome.py` and NeoVim agree on the exact same Pipulate home.
3. **`autognome.py` journal launch**: Pass `-u <PIPULATE_ROOT>/init.lua` when `autognome.py` `execvp`s `nvim journal.txt` at the end of `init` so the journal NeoVim has `init.lua` immediately, even before `nr` is run.

### Cheapest Falsifying Probe

The probe below checks which candidate directories currently hold both `.venv/bin/python3` and `init.lua`, verifies what `nvim --headless` currently loads for `init.lua`, and parses `configuration.nix` using a clean `env -i PATH="$PATH"` so the Pipulate `.venv` `LD_LIBRARY_PATH` doesn't trip `nix-instantiate` (which caused the OpenSSL/glibc mismatch in Live Receipt 3).

**3: CHANGE** (PATCHES, real SEARCH/DIVIDER/REPLACE blocks for `apply.py`):

Car 1 — Update `programs.neovim.configure.customRC` and fortify the `init` alias in `/home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix` so NeoVim resolves `init.lua` across all candidate Pipulate folders and `init` refuses to run unless a qualifying Pipulate folder (with `.venv/bin/python3` and `init.lua`) is present:

Car 2 — Ensure `autognome.py` passes `-u <PIPULATE_ROOT>/init.lua` when `execvp`-ing `nvim journal.txt` at completion so the journal session always loads the resolved Pipulate's `init.lua`:

```text
        init_lua = os.path.join(PIPULATE_ROOT, "init.lua")
        if os.path.isfile(init_lua):
            os.execvp("nvim", ["nvim", "-u", init_lua, "journal.txt"])
        else:
            os.execvp("nvim", ["nvim", "journal.txt"])
[[[REPLACE]]]
```

Ignition: run `nr` in `(sys) nixos $` when ready so the system NeoVim wrapper (`/etc/vimrc` / `customRC`) and the `init` alias activate across all shells.

**4: PROMPT** (Use `prompt` or `p` to create `prompt.md` from copy.):

```text
Review the AFTER receipts for NeoVim init.lua resolution and the fortified init guard. Next, check what remaining hardcoded /home/mike/repos/pipulate paths in configuration.nix (such as p, m, ai-commit, xp, dedupe, or stopping the tmux server cleanly) should be chiseled next.
```

**5: DELIVERABLE** (What done looks like):

* System NeoVim (`vim` / `nvim` outside any Pipulate shell) automatically finds and loads `init.lua` (restoring spellcheck and keymaps) from whichever qualifying Pipulate folder is installed in `~/repos/` or `~/`.
* `init` verifies that a qualifying Pipulate folder (having both `.venv/bin/python3` and `init.lua`) exists before running, exports `PIPULATE_ROOT="$d"`, and refuses cleanly if none is installed.
* `autognome.py` explicitly passes `-u <PIPULATE_ROOT>/init.lua` when opening `journal.txt` at the end of `init`.

Prompt:

Review the AFTER receipts for NeoVim init.lua resolution and the fortified init guard. Next, check what remaining hardcoded /home/mike/repos/pipulate paths in configuration.nix (such as p, m, ai-commit, xp, dedupe, or stopping the tmux server cleanly) should be chiseled next.

Deliverable:

Unstoppability?

Gemini 4 Argon High:

Context verified.

**TL;DR**: The AFTER receipts confirm the `init.lua` loop and fortified `init` guard landed cleanly (`CANDIDATE: /home/mike/pipulate (venv=yes, init_lua=yes)` and `NIX_PARSE_OK`). Now we eliminate the remaining 7 hardcoded `/home/mike/repos/pipulate` references in `/home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix` (`ai-commit`, `m()`, `c`, `p`, `xp`, `dedupe`, and `init`) by introducing a single shared shell helper `_pipulate_root` plus a `pkill_pipulate` (`pk`) alias so you can cleanly stop any running Pipulate `tmux` sessions and `server.py` processes in one command without having to `pu` and Ctrl+C.

### Cheapest Falsifying Probe

The probe below lists all remaining hardcoded `repos/pipulate` lines in `/home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix` and verifies Nix syntax cleanly.

---

**1: BEFORE** (PROBE, read-only, paste as block in command line):

Run in `(nix) pipulate $`:

```text
rg -n "repos/pipulate" /home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix
env -i PATH="$PATH" HOME="$HOME" nix-instantiate --parse /home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix >/dev/null && echo "NIX_PARSE_OK"
```

**2: AFTER** (NEXT CONTEXT, put in `context.txt` using `context` or `x`):

```text
/home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix
/home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py
imports/voice_synthesis.py
! rg -n "repos/pipulate" /home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix
! env -i PATH="$PATH" HOME="$HOME" nix-instantiate --parse /home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix >/dev/null && echo "NIX_PARSE_OK"
```

**3: CHANGE** (PATCHES, real SEARCH/DIVIDER/REPLACE blocks for `apply.py`):

Car 1 — Update `ai-commit`, add `_pipulate_root()` to `interactiveShellInit`, and update `m()`, `c`, `p`, `xp`, `init`, and `dedupe` (plus a `pk` alias to kill Pipulate `tmux`/`server.py` cleanly) in `/home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix`:

Ignition: run `nr` in `(sys) nixos $` when ready so `_pipulate_root`, `ai-commit`, `p`, `pk`, `c`, `xp`, `dedupe`, and `init` take effect across all shells.

**4: PROMPT** (Use `prompt` or `p` to create `prompt.md` from copy.):

```text
Verify the AFTER receipts confirming all hardcoded repos/pipulate paths in configuration.nix are resolved through _pipulate_root and NIX_PARSE_OK succeeded.
```

**5: DELIVERABLE** (What done looks like):

* Every Pipulate tool and alias in `configuration.nix` (`ai-commit`, `m()`, `p`, `c`, `xp`, `dedupe`, `init`) dynamically resolves the active Pipulate folder across `~/repos/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}` and `~/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}`.
* A new `pk` alias stops Pipulate `tmux` and `server.py` processes in one command so you never have to `pu` and Ctrl+C just to clean up or move an install folder.

**MikeLev.in**: Okay that last round did it! Everything after this is optional and I
really have to be careful because I feel the "helpful improvements" of my Claude
in Cursor IDE days where were anything but! It was nothing but regression
nightmare and I know things have come along a lot since then but they should
have come along further before I turned and found Gauthier's Aider research and
spun my own.

Now I've got this incredible surface area for continual forever-machine
improvement. I think I might actually leave the messy less-formatted terrible
spelling sequence in this article intact and publish it publicly like I didn't
think I was going to. This was totally going into the Grimoire but upon
reflection I see how incredibly valuable this is as part of the greater body of
Future Proofing Yourself in the Age of AI book training corpus that is the
public-facing articles.

Namely I made do when cut off from much of my toolchain, namely my custom
commands that the Pipulate flake of Infrastructure as Code provides.

I put so much of my daily productivity drivers in Pipulate that I leave much of
it out of my so-called "parent" or "host" operating system.

Why?

Because Pipulate travels really, really well and I can feel at home in seconds
on any Mac or Windows machine with WSL.

Whereas that upper NixOS machine while it's nice and I am figuring I'm teaching
how to teach people to raise their personal Hermit Crab Tamagotchi AI-buddy for
life with hardware like that, it's still not as essential as your muscle memory
and a good POSIX environment traveling with you for life.

Oh and you know the unsung hero of all of this? NeoVim even without my own
init.lua configuration file. Why? Because I know how to load multiple files into
the buffers and copy-paste between them so all the stuff I do with `p`, `x`, `c`
also known as `prompt`, `context` and `compile` I was able to do with NeoVim...
well all but the compile part and that was just a longer form of a command
that's easily found.

Let's finish this 5-Car Train and wrap the article.

**4: PROMPT**:

Verify the AFTER receipts confirming all hardcoded repos/pipulate paths in configuration.nix are resolved through _pipulate_root and NIX_PARSE_OK succeeded.

**5: DELIVERABLE**:

A grab-bag of anti-fragility first-step precautions. I can kill any pipulate
sessions with `pk`, okay got it. Very nice. Let's verify these and wrap the
article.

Hop off the ride. This ride's stated goal is reached -- dismount.
This is the NOTARY BEAT: the ride ends here, is witnessed here, and is
sealed here. Answer all seven beats, briefly:

0. **TL;DR**: a short, dry, neutral abstract for the TOP of the published
   article -- written for an unfamiliar reader or AI summarizer who has
   never seen this system. No hype, no insider handles unexplained.
1. VERIFY: restate the goal from the top of this article and confirm
   (or deny) it was met, citing THIS compile's receipts, not memory.
   Name any ignition this ride required that never fired -- an AFTER
   tap taken without one is a stale BEFORE wearing the AFTER's label.
2. BANK: name everything that graduates -- rule, earmark, todo, pin --
   as SEARCH/REPLACE patch cars against raw source present in THIS
   context (Target line inside the fence, one car per commit story),
   deletions included. A 'paste-ready' line with no Target and no
   SEARCH anchor is not banked; it is a hand edit the operator will
   not make. These BANK cars are the ONLY patches a dismount emits.
3. DANGLING: what carries forward unbanked? One line each, no essays.
4. SEED: the context.txt lines (and TODO_SLUGS if narrative context is
   needed) for the next ride's first compile.
5. CLOSING: a closing summary for the BOTTOM of the article -- the
   final take-away, tied to the book's larger arc where it fits
   naturally, never forced. Storytelling over inventory.
6. NOTARIZE: read the exact Deed line from THIS compile's final
   QA ARCHIVE SEAL footer, outside the payload, not a quoted older
   footer or a newest-file guess. It names the input archive, not
   this later response or the generated Jekyll post. State verification
   separately: only a verifier receipt naming that archive supports
   a verified claim; otherwise say not independently verified here.
   Count this Manifest's live-command receipts, including failures.
   Quote only recorded digests, sizes and dates, naming their source;
   filesystem mtime and fixed ZIP dates are not command timestamps.
   Do not demand absent wc -c or dated-receipt fields. If the footer
   is missing, say so; otherwise close with its exact Deed line.

FINALITY: after beat 6, this discussion is CLOSED. Emit NO five-car
train, NO probes, NO patches beyond the BANK cars of beat 2, and NO
next-turn prompt beyond the SEED lines in beat 4. Any reader or model
encountering this article later should treat it as a finished,
notarized document -- an archive entry, not an open thread.

## The Notary Beat: Verifying and Banking Decoupled Host Discovery

**Gemini 4 Argon High**: Context verified.

### 1. VERIFY

* **Opening Goal**: Make `autognome.py` and the parent NixOS environment locate Pipulate Prime across `~/` and `~/repos/` under any of its door install names (`pipulate`, `npvg`, `qamyai`, `qamy`), ensure Piper TTS voice models resolve reliably, restore global NeoVim `init.lua` loading outside a Pipulate shell, fortify `init` so it refuses to run without a qualifying Pipulate folder, and provide a clean process-stop alias (`pk`).
* **Verification from This Compile's Live Receipts**:
1. `! rg -n "repos/pipulate" /home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix` dropped from 9 hardcoded single-path references in the BEFORE tap to 4 lines (lines 28, 222, 244, 250), every one of which is now an element inside the multi-path candidate loops in `ai-commit`, `programs.neovim.configure.customRC`, and `_pipulate_root()`. All standalone hardcoded references in `m()`, `c`, `p`, `xp`, `init`, and `dedupe` were replaced by `_pipulate_root()`.
2. `! env -i PATH="$PATH" HOME="$HOME" nix-instantiate --parse /home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix >/dev/null && echo "NIX_PARSE_OK"` returned `NIX_PARSE_OK` (exit 0 in `0.0580s`).
3. Codebase inspection of `/home/mike/repos/nixos/autognome.py`, `/home/mike/pipulate/imports/voice_synthesis.py`, and `/home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix` confirms `resolve_pipulate_root()`, `~/.config/pipulate/piper_models` topological anchoring, `-u <PIPULATE_ROOT>/init.lua` on `nvim` journal launch, and the `pk` alias are all in place.

* **Ignition Status**: All required ignitions fired. The operator ran `nr` (`sudo nixos-rebuild switch`) in `(sys) nixos $`, building 17 derivations and activating `/nix/store/79hw937w08dif5aazn48rh1g3kz3p10a-nixos-system-nixos-25.05.813814.ac62194c3917`, and verified a full system restart and `init` run across all 7 desktops.

# 2026-10-04 dismount THE PUBLIC ROUTER NAMES NO CLIENT (deeds 58 through 60 in ~/qamyai, and every hash in this line predates the history rewrite; pipulate 2e8717c the key, ea50a30 the scrub under a subject typed by hand; corporate d19f848 the table; trimnoir 4a5c13dea, deployed by push; Claude Opus 5.5 on every turn): a week of client orgs, client sites, a colleague's first name and ticket findings had ridden the router into the public repo, and one sed table in the corporate tier (Workshop/corporate/scrub/clients.sed, longest spelling first, client-a through client-l, .example for domains) cleaned this tree and the book in two pastes. WITNESSED: the tree census 2 files (connectors/jira.py 2 lines, foo_files.py 7) -> 0 with SCRUB_GO; the -G census 1 -> 2 as forecast, the scrub commit's removed lines the second; --grep 0 both taps, the hand-typed subject keeping the diff's words out of the log; the book 20 files -> 1, the one a false positive, which the table's word boundary left alone and the census's unanchored pattern caught (THE UNANCHORED-WITNESS COROLLARY, mine: a census matches exactly what its table matches, so the probes now anchor where the table does); no post filename carries a name; the 2.77 sdist carries no foo_files.py. THE CENSUS WAS SHALLOW: the -G census named 4b0a6a3 of 2026-10-02, the day ~/qamyai was installed, as the oldest commit carrying a name, a week after the router first did (THE SHALLOW CENSUS, PENDING its probe). RULED by the operator: broken commit hashes accepted, PyPI and forks deferred; git filter-repo over every branch and tag of a fresh bare clone, the table converted line for line into replace-text expressions, pushed only after a full-history census reads 0. ai.py: d19f848 "Update clients.sed" for a file created; 2e8717c "Refactor" for a rule bank. WITNESSED at deed 61, the rewrite: a fresh bare clone read before=131 after=0 over 11,149 commits, the oldest carrying a name dated 2025-10-28 (a year, not a week), filter-repo's repack 267.5 s; the force push 1e30700b -> ed99b358 and RESET_GO in ~/qamyai at 9853 commits on main, names_in_history=0 in the compile lane; Car 4's first paste printed STOP_DIRTY because the fade's own edit sat uncommitted, the guard's dirty branch witnessed, and ai.py then committed the fade under a nixos shebang subject quoted from a neighbouring receipt, now the rewritten tip. THE FOLDER IS A VARIABLE, a third face: the BEFORE probes were typed in ~/repos/trimnoir and read that repo (shallow false, 1175 commits, 106 name lines in its private history, an sdist line with no file name), and patch was typed there too, where a file named patch is tracked, so d showed the patch file and m committed it twice, the full table in 999e0dfd8, both pushed to Honeybot through a hook cut at its build; the table's 25-rule rewrite sat uncommitted in the corporate tier (INFERRED). THE OVER-SCRUB, read off the word diff: eleven posts carried a client's word in a public sense (left unnamed here: naming the senses would decode the placeholders), and each was a decoder line, a placeholder beside a public sense that names it; they ride a restore car from the scrub's parent, gate overscrubbed_still_differ 11 -> 0. WITNESSED at deed 62: overscrubbed_still_differ 11 by hand -> 0 in the compile lane (RESTORED staged=11; trimnoir 917b62a18, 13 files, the patch file's deletion and its .gitignore line among them); patch tracked 1 -> 0; mikelev.in/patch 200 -> 404 beside the home page's 200, so the blog had been serving the tracked patch file, its versions unread; local and Honeybot both 917b62a18 after a deploy that ran to Deployment Complete; the corporate tier still 1 uncommitted line (INFERRED clients.sed), the 25-rule rewrite on disk beside d19f848's first version; and the receipt this line banked at deed 61 described the restored senses in this public file, folded out of a51ba495 by the dismount's car. UNWITNESSED: the reset of Prime's old checkout, the Mac and strangers' installs; the table's commit; the three posts the word diff could not show, read by hand; the Google Doc copies; pii_substitutions.txt; GitHub's pull refs and cached SHAs. Next: the proprietary work.

### 3. DANGLING

* Other scripts under `/home/mike/repos/nixos/scripts/` (such as `backup-home.py`, `dedupe.py`, or `chrome_windows.py`, not in this compile's context) were not inspected for hardcoded `/home/mike/repos/pipulate` paths.
* When multiple qualifying installs exist simultaneously on disk (e.g., both `~/repos/pipulate` and `~/pipulate`), `_pipulate_root()` and `resolve_pipulate_root()` pick in fixed candidate order (`~/repos/` before `~/`) unless `PIPULATE_ROOT` is set in the environment.

### 5. CLOSING

The temptation when configuring a sovereign NixOS workstation is to fuse the host operating system and the guest project into a single monolith. The moment you delete, rename, or relocate that guest folder—testing a fresh `~/pipulate` or `~/qamyai` install from a public door—every hardcoded tether in the host snaps at once: the startup voice goes silent, the desktop orchestrator points at an empty directory, and NeoVim loses its `init.lua` keybindings and spellcheck. Yet even when stripped down to bare metal without `init.lua` or flake aliases, core NeoVim buffers and POSIX pipes remained enough to drive the 5-Car Train and repair the bridge one small, reversible chisel-strike at a time. By keeping the portable productivity engine inside the Pipulate flake (so it travels effortlessly to any Mac or WSL machine) while teaching the parent NixOS host to discover whichever qualifying door install is present on disk and cache its 60 MB Piper voice in `~/.config/pipulate/piper_models`, both layers stay independent, resilient, and ready to travel.

## Book Analysis

### Ai Editorial Take
What stands out most in this session is the discovery of an 'inverted dependency trap' between stationary and nomadic layers of a personal computing stack. Usually, developers worry about an application breaking because a host OS library changed underneath it. Here, the failure ran in the exact opposite direction: the immutable host OS (`configuration.nix`) broke because a portable guest repository moved one directory up from `~/repos/pipulate` to `~/pipulate`. Even more revealing is the moment in Round 2 where running a probe with `LD_LIBRARY_PATH=""` broke Python's NumPy C-extensions (`libstdc++.so.6` missing), while running `nix-instantiate` *with* the flake's `LD_LIBRARY_PATH` broke the host's OpenSSL and glibc. That side-by-side failure is a textbook X-ray of Nix's dynamic linker isolation: two generations of the Nix store coexisting on the same disk, each requiring its own exact RPATH and environment boundary (`env -i` for host binaries, flake shell for `.venv` C-extensions). Watching the workflow route around both linker boundaries and a chat-renderer escaping bug (`\vert{}\vert{}`) without losing momentum makes this entry a remarkably practical case study in cross-boundary systems engineering.

### Title Brainstorm
* **Title Option:** Decoupled Host Discovery: Un-Hardwiring NixOS from Portable Nix Flakes
  * **Filename:** `decoupled-host-discovery-nix-flake-portability.md`
  * **Rationale:** Directly names the architectural pattern banked at the end of the session (`DECOUPLED HOST DISCOVERY`) and highlights the core tension between a stationary NixOS host and a portable Nix flake.
* **Title Option:** The Motherstone and the Arrowhead: Dynamic Path Resolution Across NixOS and Flakes
  * **Filename:** `motherstone-and-arrowhead-nixos-flake-discovery.md`
  * **Rationale:** Uses the article's opening stone-knapping metaphor to frame the parent-child relationship between `configuration.nix` and `flake.nix` alongside the concrete path-resolution fix.
* **Title Option:** Surviving Without init.lua: Repairing Host-to-Flake Seams in NixOS and Neovim
  * **Filename:** `surviving-without-init-lua-nixos-neovim-seams.md`
  * **Rationale:** Highlights the relatable developer story of losing editor config mid-refactor and using vanilla Neovim buffer fluency to restore the system in four small commits.
* **Title Option:** Un-Hardwiring the Workshop: Candidate Root Probing for NixOS, Piper TTS, and Neovim
  * **Filename:** `unhardwiring-workshop-candidate-root-probing-nixos.md`
  * **Rationale:** Focuses on the concrete technical deliverables—candidate directory probing, `~/.config` asset anchoring, and shell helper consolidation.

### Content Potential And Polish
- **Core Strengths:**
  - Clear architectural framing in the opening paragraphs: the 'motherstone and arrowhead' analogy immediately explains why `configuration.nix` and `flake.nix` are separate and why coupling them by file path hurts portability.
  - Honest wire-truth debugging: captures real failure modes across boundaries, including markdown chat renderer mangling (`||` turned into `\vert{}\vert{}`), `LD_LIBRARY_PATH` collisions between `.venv` NumPy/glibc and system `nix-instantiate`, and stray candidate directories (`~/qamyai`) shadowing fresh installs.
  - Demonstrates graceful degradation of human skill: when `init.lua` and custom shell aliases broke, raw Neovim multi-buffer editing (`:b`, yank/put) carried the workflow until the automation was restored.
  - Complete before/after receipts: shows `rg -n "repos/pipulate" configuration.nix` dropping from 9 brittle single-path references to 4 loop-scoped candidate entries.
- **Suggestions For Polish:**
  - Briefly explain the four 'door' names (`pipulate`, `npvg`, `qamyai`, `qamy`) early on so a new reader understands why the same repository gets installed under four different directory identities.
  - Add a short note explaining why `env -i PATH="$PATH" HOME="$HOME"` fixed the `OPENSSL_3.6.0` / `GLIBC_ABI_DT_X86_64_PLT` error in `nix-instantiate`—specifically that the active Nix flake shell exported a newer `LD_LIBRARY_PATH` that clashed with the host system's `/run/current-system/sw/bin/nix-instantiate` binary.
  - Consider extracting the candidate list (`/home/mike/repos/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}` and `/home/mike/{pipulate,npvg,qamyai,qamy}`) into a single Nix `let` binding in `configuration.nix` in a future pass so `ai-commit`, `customRC`, and `_pipulate_root` all interpolate from one source of truth.

### Next Step Prompts
- Audit `/home/mike/repos/nixos/scripts/` (including `dedupe.py`, `backup-home.py`, and `chrome_windows.py`) for any remaining hardcoded `/home/mike/repos/pipulate` paths and refactor them to resolve through `PIPULATE_ROOT` or a shared discovery helper.
- DRY up the candidate directory list inside `/home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix` by defining a single `pipulateCandidates` list in the top `let` block and interpolating it into `ai-commit`, `programs.neovim.configure.customRC`, and `_pipulate_root()`.
