editor so I'm going to try it out. I'm coming off the back of an intense coding
binge that had me incredibly focused for weeks pushing the Pipulate system to be
ready for release, at least internally at the company where I work and closer to
a general public release. But things are proceeding so fast on the AI front with
the competition heating up with the AI Coding Assistants ostensibly inching
towards superintelligence, I have to dive back in head-first. I have to *make
myself focus again* after a hiatus that shows in my writing lull. And this is
that attempt.

First it's always a matter of surveying the landscape. Looking at the X posts
and YouTube videos reveals a landscape full of hype, but it's not all truly
hype. There's so much weird, wild and wonderful stuff going on. Google is
showing Genie 3 which is an AI reality simulator along the lines of Unity,
Unreal Engine, Godot, and CryEngine but with AI for the world physics. Who knows
how much of that is actually AI versus a more traditional reality engine but
the demos are impressive and causing quite a stir with the latest being this
sort of inception experience with the scene on a computer screen being the same
environment as the scene out the window. But it's all just demos.

However, ChatGPT 5 is really out after all this time. They're outright calling
it ChatGPT 5 and not some other silly indecipherable expectation-altering name
per OpenAI's tradition, so there is a level of seriousness and confidence being
projected here. I seamlessly transitioned to Claude 4 Sonnet in Cursor AI when
it came out and during my coding-spree upped my service from the $20/mo level
all the way up to the $200/mo level so I didn't get cut off from Claude and
relegated to Cursor Small, but just as of yesterday dialed-back down to the
basic level. 

Also, given the fatigue of my last coding session and all the hullabaloo about
the command-line Claude Code service, I'm in the mood to venture out and explore
before my habits and muscle memory solidifies around Cursor AI — and I'm not
talking about Windsurf or VSCode which I believe are just knock-off's of Cursor,
but rather the new agentic stuff. The gameplan here is getting costs down and
quality and speed up. The old adage goes: cost, quality and speed; pick two.
Well, maybe we don't need to anymore.

Okay, so that's the surveying of the landscape. It's still mostly a
fork-of-VSCode world comprised of the 3 big players: Cursor, Windsurf and
VSCode of which I'm still on Cursor. All the companies are trying to get around
$20/mo subscription service out of you, but they're all playing the *boil the
frog* game tweaking-up how much they're charging you by leaving you high-and-dry
when you need the AI assistance most. It's sort of like then giving you a
backhoe to let you dig yourself deep into a coding hole and then running out of
power once you're in a deep hole and then charging you more to escape. Cursor
managed to 10x how much I was paying in the course of one very active coding
month.

There was a bit more change in the landscape lately worth mentioning as I dig
into what I hope to be some remarkably focused work this weekend. During my
recovery from my coding fatigue OpenAI finally released their open source model
gpt-oss which I wrote about in my last entry and it's sloth-slow on my hardware,
but there was a pretty major changes in the Ollama software that's used to run
such local AI's, specifically a Web UI was added where there was not one before
(Ollama being a command-line tool and http service) and gpt-oss was made the
default. So OpenAI is making big strategic partnership moves getting special
promotion through Ollama and (for now) giving ChatGPT 5 out for free in Cursor.

And so the distraction rabbit holes about. I will not lose this weekend on tool
recalibration. But what I will do is take up the free OpenAI ChatGPT 5 offer in
Cursor to give it a detailed run-down in my uniquely raw document everything way
right here. This is likely to be one very long article.

I am on Cursor Version 1.4.3 on NixOS (Linux). My project is Pipulate, a *First
This, Then That* workflow framework designed to turn Jupyter Notebooks into Web
Apps where you don't have to look at the Python code. It's purpose in life is to
receive AI assistance on refining the framework itself and using the framework
to make these workflows. To do this it reduces the surface-area of required
JavaScript libraries like React and uses instead long-term stable libraries like
Python and HTMX, thus relying on knowns that are stable targets and long-term
trained into the base models. There is less the models need to guess about when
providing coding assistance.

### The Philosophy of Future-Proofing with Python and HTMX

A concept that keeps coming up is that if I had more time I'd make it shorter.
We want less surface-area, less exception handling, less file-sprawl and less of
everything in order to have more explicit, certain help of a future-proof
nature. There's not a lot of stable targets in tech but Python is one of them
only up to version 3 in 30 years. The HTML standard and the browser document
object model (DOM) is another. The more you can lean on that and the less you
lean on the rapidly churning libraries written in JavaScript, the better and
HTMX appears to be the key to all that, which I am betting on. Over the past
year or so I've developed Pipulate around these concepts.

## First Interaction With ChatGPT 5 Through Cursor AI

Okay after that first prompt I see:

to give free unlimited use of ChatGPT 5 so it may be that this first prompt used
up 7% of my total allocation, so I am going to plan my next step carefully.

One of the things I very typically do with Anthropic Claude is to provide the
entire article context of my writing here as a sort of storytelling
super-context prompt. I'm not asking it to do any particular next step but
rather fleshing out the big picture. I don't necessarily know what I want to do
next. Well that's not entirely true. In broad strokes I do know what I want to
do next.

I want to make this all EASIER FOR MYSELF! See, with the AI Code Assistants
becoming superintelligent there's one thing they're going to be very much able
to do for you and that is single-shot coding where the AI decides and therefore
knows everything about the project because it created it all from scratch
probably using the most likely to be successful wisdom of the crowd approach
statistically suggested by similar such code that it trained on from GitHub.
Sure you may add some creative twist to it, but then what's happening is the AI
decides everyone based on the most similar existing likely to succeed concept
that can blend into whatever twist you're putting on it. Additional coding is
then just smoothing out the melding of the well-known patterns onto the new
patterns. It's a sort of one-shot coding prompt plus healing a graft.

That is the AI coding honeymoon. That's the multi-dimensional Rubik's Cubes,
endless versions of Snake, Asteroids and all those other glitzy gimmicks that
make you think AI is smarter and sexier than it really is.

This is not groundbreaking creativity. This is not changing everything forever
for the better.

I believe FastHTML is this sort of groundbreaking creativity. I believe that
FastHTML which blends Python with the HTML specification using HTMX attributes
in such a way that the need for the extra level of abstraction of a templating
language like Jinja2 (similar to Liquid templates) in favor of just using Python
functions as the templating language is half-way revolutionary. The other half
is sending HTML *over the wire* to directly manipulate the DOM. Together
multiple layers of often fragile and often rapidly churning abstractions are
torn out and a obsolescence resistant future-proofing remains. This is because
of how slow Python changes and how tightly coupled HTMX is to the HTML
specification which also changes profoundly slowly compared to other tech.

But hardly any of this is trained into the base models yet. There's not a lot of
examples in GitHub. I think my project may be one of the first big projects out
there doing this. And I am determined to make the big project small.

A tenet of all this is the return to the days where one person can more or less
understand and control it all on one piece of hardware under their direct
control, right down to the baked-in AI running shotgun on every action. So it's
sort of like an attempt to return to the LAMP days but on not merely a
modernized tech stack, but on as future-proofed and accessible to the
non-braniac masses tech stack possible.

This is a challenge because of React dogma and the completely legitimate
assertion of WebAssembly and such. However another tenet of this approach is
that it's not being built for enterprise scaling parallelism. It's built for
1-user, 1-piece of hardware. It's built a lot like how Electron apps are built
to be single tenant. And whereas Electron uses Node and custom installers to
address every supported hardware platform, Pipulate uses Nix and as such the
application comes up in a standard web browser even though its served locally.
Also, the Ollama install is highly recommended and a model (usually Gemma 3)
installed. What's more, FastHTML-style Python code just looks so different than
most things anyone is used to with all the big return blocks that there's just a
lot to overcome. That's a big part of the challenge.

Now I need to solve the challenge for myself first, making it easier to slam out
new workflows. And that gets us to the rather open-ended prompt here and test of
ChatGPT 5 to see what it's going to do with it. This weekend, that is the rest
of today and through tomorrow which is a very small window before a busy week
begins where I don't want to feel the coding-all-night burnout, I need to have
produced a *lay of the land* SEO workflow that sizes-up the size or footprint of
a site from various sources. It will likely:

- Use a Google site: search with only semi-automated browser control. We may
  tell the user to copy/paste the number into a field.
- Use the API connection to Botify to get an estimate of the site-size from
  various data sources such as the crawler, Google Search Console and the Web
  Logs (when each is available)
- Compare this to the size of the site advertised by the sitemap.xml

Now this is not exactly the process or flow, but it is the beginning of the
storytelling of the site. The overarching broad stroke objective is to spell out
how big your site should be, is, highlight spider traps and faceted search
combinatorial site-size explosion and other such issues.

It doesn't all have to be done at once and this is by all means NOT a request to
start coding. This is rather a request to help me think it all through.

The plugin system lets me throw experimental workflows into the system without
polluting up the APPs dropdown. The APPs dropdown has grouped roles that help me
organize plugins sequentially. This all will help me in website whisperer story
telling. Ultimately there will be a series of workflows, each of which does a
smaller part, but the totality of which covers things such as traditional SEO
effectiveness evaluation and AI readiness, setting the stage for additional
follow-on deliverables.

I guess at its heart what I'm looking for is to help ebb things because it
flowed too much recently. There's too much sprawl. I feel like things got out of

The whole thing should be able to snowball. With more time it gets forever

Ugh! It's already almost 1:00 PM on Saturday. At this rate I'm hardly going to
get anything done this weekend. But I do have to regain the clarity and have
that crystal-clear plan for the rest of the day. I have to come out of this with
*something to show* and to keep the excitement level up and that whole *Mike can
deliver* feeling going. It's got to be something that can blend into day-to-day
work work and increase the appetite for the next step and I think ChatGPT 5
picked up on much of that.

However, the *first does free* countdown has gone from ~7% used to ~10% used.
It's funny how this new version of Cursor is showing the *first does free
count-down meter.* This is a part of the new state of things.

The amount I was willing to spend to get the full unbridled AI experience got up
to $200 for a single month and these companies are doing the math.

I lost my momentum after such a big coding push and now I'm getting back up on
