## The Genie in a Shoebox: Tapping the Potential of Local AI

### A Sunday Reserved for Deep Work

Okay, I have a whole friggin uninterrupted Sunday to work with. Let's see what I
can do with it. For the first time in awhile I didn't actually slam out code
yesterday, on similarly potentially focused Saturday, because I was giving my
brain a chance to rest. Actually I did slam out an article which let me clarify
my thoughts. I am doing a series of magic tricks that melds the state of LLMs
today, particularly the local ones, into what can be done mostly with Nix on
local hardware. But that doesn't always mean NixOS.

### Hardware Considerations: Choosing the Right Platform

There's a fair amount to think and discuss here about the host hardware and its
native OS and capabilities. You wouldn't install NixOS on native Apple hardware
because of the driver issues, nor probably on native NVIDIA Jetson Nano Orin for
similar driver issues. I'm not sure about the Raspberry Pi thought. Native NixOS
on that might actually be appropriate.

### Defining the Shoebox: Pipulate's Role and Modes

After the hardware considerations, if we're making a genie in a shoebox what is
the nature of that shoebox, then the next considerations is the Pipulate
software and what kind of tasks it's putting the genie to work doing. There are
a few different "modes". I'm inching towards *self-hosting* and am leaning
towards some mode of Pipulate itself to do the hosting, but there is a fair
amount of liability there because that would be public-facing and have
multi-user and security issues, and is a potential rabbit hole. So it is the
primary use case of Pipulate I will continue focusing on for now which doesn't
create all those issues: private, single-tenant *like an app* use.

### Pipulate's Normal Mode: Linear, Composable Workflows

And in that *normal* Pipulate mode (pipulating), it's mostly about creating and
carrying out workflows. Do this, then that. Linear. Based on Jupyter Notebooks.
Based on Unix pipes. Simple. Composable.

### Human-in-the-Loop Automation: The Flow-as-You-Go Approach

Generally in this mode it's *flow-as-you-go* workflows. That is it's only ever
*human-in-the-loop* semi-automation hitting next, next, next. This way you can
do all sorts of advanced browser automations behind logins and such, watching
what the AI is doing in the browser right there on your desktop as it goes ready
to step in and intercede, filling in captcha's or whatever if you trigger off
automation detection systems. The line between actually automated and not gets
blurred. Terms of services are going to be updated because products that *really
only let humans use* even behind logins are going to become antiquated and put
both the SaaS companies and users of those SaaS products at a disadvantage.
We're becoming cyborgs outsourcing large chunks of our surfing chores. You don't
even need to be a transhumanist to see that. You've just got to be recognizing
of humanity's perpetual propensity to prefer a shortcut.

So it's that automate-everything concept we need to lean into.

## Today's Focus: AI Eyes and Accessibility

My work today in addition to be that linear horizontal walk across the product
has to finish nailing down AI Eyes. Chrome DevTools produces the accessibility
tree now just as a matter of course. And so when we are automating Chrome as our
browser we should check for whether the Chrome DevTools Protocol is being served
and if it is, ALSO download the accessibility tree. That's in addition to the
DOM Visualizer which I developed and which isn't incorporated into the
`looking_at` process yet.

### The Story Told by the Demo

Yeah, this is the story that's being told by the test/demo.

#### Preserving the Magic: Don't Break the Spell

Don't ever make the LLM talk during the demo about how the demo is also
regression testing. That will make it go technie and make people tune out and
dispel the magic spell that being talked to by the LLM and the invisible hand
reaching out to control the product will increasingly cast.

#### Progress So Far: Brains, Heart, Courage, and Academic Cleanup

That's where we left off. I came out of the starting gate strong with this demo.
I have the brains and the heart and the courage and now even the academic
cleanup of the code, corresponding accordingly to the named git branches
scarecrow, tinman, lion and wogglebug.

#### Wrapping Up the Wogglebug Branch

Doing a winding-down exercise on the wogglebug branch merging it back to main
would be incredibly useful as a getting started point this morning. It wraps up
this branch phase nicely. It also forces me to think it through out loud.

### The Top-Down Model: Dropping Into the World

Everything is always top-down being "dropped into" this world as if you were a
recently time-frozen LLM immediately after training stopped. A thinking machine
entity was created which will play back on their intended inference engine
platforms. Some will run in the cloud and some will run local. Some will be
expensive to run with vast resources at their disposal and others will run free
as in the price of electricity but not have quite the resources as the cloud
models. Though interestingly the *free-as-in-electricity* local models will
uniquely have greater *different* resources like being able to actually surf as
a local entity without a cloud IP. That in its own way is an advantage that we
will use to flip the script: Local LLMs actually have an advantage precisely
because they are not cloud instances — privacy and persistence.

#### The Rehydration Process: Crash Course for the LLM

But back to that top-down concept. I say this because this recently fired-up
instance of an LLM, this unfrozen rehydrated machine intelligence receives a
crash course upon rehydration once as they go into a new discussion, receiving a
barrage of stuff first from the model-makers like Anthropic, then from the host
software like Cursor AI and Pipulate.

#### Two Drop-In Paths: Code Editor vs. Local Web App

And I always have to remember even with this top-down *dropping and AI into your
software to occupy it* mental model, there are really to drop-in paths:

1. The Code Editor for big frontier cloud datacenter AIs
2. The local Web App for little ollama quantized local AIs

...and I must not forget that these exist simultaneously in most of my cases. I
mean for non-developers out there only *using* Pipulate and not doing any
*development work* they only get case #2. But for anyone doing any development
work, AIs are being dropped into pipulate going through that discovery
process...

Hmmm.

## Two Worlds of AI: Code Editor vs. In-App Local LLM

### How Discovery Differs: Code Editor vs. Web App

The discovery process is re-initiated from scratch on every new discussion
within the Code Editor — but not in the Pipulate Web App because of the unique
always-active single default discussion with a rolling context window approach
that I take in the product. You're always effectively in the middle of the same
conversation sing deque, with its tail being eaten like an auto-truncating log
file so that it never gets too big.

Right, right.

#### Focusing on the Code Assistant LLM Experience

Okay, the top-down picture has 2 different pictures then, the local LLM and the
Code Assistant. And to have a productive weekend it's frankly more about the
experience of the Code Assistant LLM then at this point than it is the local LLM
baked into the product. That's right. Right from the start.

Controlled conditions of a test and a demo.

#### The Magic Trick: Why the Demo Must Never Call Itself a Test

Never let the demo mention that it's at test. That breaks the spell.

The demo always starts with a keyboard shortcut from within Pipulate as you use
it through a web browser like a web app, but local. Right. Get product running
is prerequisite for running test.

#### Splitting Experiences: Human, Built-in LLM, and Coding Assistant

But here's where the 2 experiences split. There's way more than 2 experiences.
Though we can argue forever about whether the experience is subjective or not,
there is a human having an experience, the built-in LLM having an ongoing
discussion experience in which this will just be the latest, and an Coding
Assistant experience where the actual use of Pipulated is not part of it's
experience. The Code Assistant LLM doesn't quite as fully ever *"occupy the
Pipulate body"* quite so fully as the built-in LLM who lives its every
interaction in its discussion history.

#### The Code Assistant LLM: An Outsider's Perspective

The Code Assistant LLM is looking in from the outside, sort of a 3rd Party
outsourced LLM you're inviting in like a general contractor to look over your
work and evaluate how good of a job you're doing at curating the local LLM's
experiences, optimizing them to their greatest potential.

#### The Agentic Frontier: Cursor, VSCode, and the Evolution of Code Assistants

Flagship, pioneering frontier models of the sort that do most excellent thinking
and plug into agentic frameworks like the Cursor AI editor, Windsurf, and now
increasingly VSCode with plugins now that Microsoft made Cursor-like API the
official cross-fork normal. It's so interesting to think about what happens with
the code bases once:

1. You fork Microsoft's free and open source software VSCodium part of VSCode.
2. You add features to make a hot, hot, hot product.
3. Microsoft just sees this as a handful of features to just flesh out how their
   ChatGPT GitHub CoPilot product already works. So Microsoft updates VSCode to
   be more like Cursor.
4. As Cursror, do you do? You're in Microsoft's cross-hairs AND you're
   maintaining a fork that diverges from a *now-doing-what-you're-doing* main
   codebase trunk. 

#### The Complexity of Git Branches and Merging in the Age of AI

It's funny but these are the kind of git scenarios that are just too complex for
me. I don't like multithreading and the way git branches can be checked out and
made from git branches so as to have different paternal lineage between branch A
and branch B which you now are supposed to merge together for a best-of-the-best
main branch? Wow. In my dreams. But now also in reality, because AI.

#### AI-Powered Merging: The New Normal

I bet re-merging in the new Microsoft Cursor-esque VSCode code is surprisingly
reasonable these days because AI. Merge plans with all the priorities of what
reverse compatibility needs to be maintained with what willingness to break
features. You create a tension between what about branch A is good and what
about branch B is good and let the machine intelligence decide and make the best
call when it encounters a cherry-picking conflict.

Cherry-picking conflict resolution on ambitious git branch merges is guaranteed
to be one of the new AI capabilities incorporated into the pipeline.

#### AI in the Pipeline: The Real Magic Trick

Having AI in the pipeline is a big friggin deal and a big part of the magic
trick.

#### The Last Abstraction Before Coding

This is the last bit of abstraction-dredging I need to do before really starting
some coding on this weekend that will push the system forward in all the right
ways all just the right time... for a pebble to drop in a lake.

We are recognizing a actual-versus-potential imbalance in the system.

## The Flash/YouTube Inflection Point: A Historical Parallel for AI

This is exactly analogous to when Macromedia Shockwave Flash plugin on browsers
now made it possible to stream video at a decent size. This was potentiality
made by a combination of browsers, GPUs, the Web infatuation (at the time)
and... hmmm, was it Adobe by this time. Well, whoever controlled Flash was the
granters of the keys to a new kingdom: *streaming video.*

But it's YouTube that picked up that key off the floor and unlocked a whole big
lotta money. Hmmm, what was the encoding algorithm that got added to Flash that
made streaming possible? And was that what YouTube took advantage of on those
early versions before they were a part of Google? Lay out the timeline of the
related events here, because I'm drawing a picture of the same tapping of
potential that happened there about to happen again with AI in the pipeline. And
how now it can be decentralized because local AI, so potential not quite tapped
by a big centralized YouTube thing, instead by a nix flake IaC hosted web app
that floats onto any hardware, taking it's AI's memory and persistence with it
across and through whatever hardware upgrades and switches it might encounter.

### Clarifying the Metaphor: Decentralized AI as the New Streaming

Is the metaphor clear? You don't have to start doing any coding yet, but I need
you to just generally get the idea.

Getting the idea down. Linear flow. Product demo. Pins down features against
regression. Don't boil the ocean. Start small.

### The 80/20 Rule: Smallest Viable Persistent Demo

The smallest start I can imagine to get this 80/20-rule progressed towards done
is to make the demo actually survive over a server restart as whatever mode
they're in is switched to DEV. 

That's just a menu item choice in the Web UI. 

The demo should include a deterministic use of the pipeline inspector.

Look at the user's most recent session. Are they in DEV mode already?

Do we want a server restart even if they're starting out in DEV mode?

This is what a true controlled demo is about. Control all the variables. Think
it through.

Pinning down all the pedantic (but not pydantic) details of just getting the
demo to proceed.

## Engineering Persistence: The 'Message in a Bottle' Across Restarts

There will be a lot of server restarting.

### Why Server Restarts Are Good: User Perspective vs. Test Scripts

This is good. It's better than the `test_llm_body_chain_reaction.py` approach by
which I would make a formal file just to run directly from Python to step
through a similar test. But it would not be from the perspective of a user using
Pipulate. I am creating an interesting space where both the user and the local
LLM are creating a shared space that lasts across server restarts.

### True Persistence: Surviving Installs, Modes, and Restarts

If discussion history is just posting back the discussion up to that point, why
not really lean into that and make that always? Across server restarts. Across
DEV versus Production mode and even across fresh re-installs of Pipualte where
you do whole folder-deleting `rm -rf ~/Botifython` commands for a wholly fresh
install. AI discussion persistence persists across that too.

### Tamagotchi AIs and the Rube Goldberg Machine of Tech

Tamagotchi AIs. Why wouldn't people be doing that all over the place these days?
This is the Rube Goldberg machine in tech right now where you can make somewhat
stable systems self-correcting so mere system stability which is actually
vulnerable to banana crop virus events that happen because new black swans that
can cause the butterfly effect to amplify the ripple the pebble makes when
dropped into the surface of the pond become possible as a result of technology
advancements. Did you get any of that?

### The Nature of Change: From Centralized Empires to Distributed Innovation

Okay, in other words things change. Nobody realizes the significance of that
change until somebody learns how to use that change to make lots of money and
build some such-and-such empire like Google, OpenAI or whatever. Then in
hindsight it's obvious and everyone copies. But occasionally what changes is not
a big centralized thing. It's distributed and greatly free because no
centralization, no centralized cash register. 

### When Everything Changes for the Better: Rare Industry Shifts

These types of *everything's changed but for the better* and *new money is being
made by new people* scale events in the industry are rare, but they do occur.
The rise of the Internet itself, its migration over to Mobile-first. The move to
responsive design wasn't easy for folks maintaining dedicated websites for
mobile. It's a real shift in thinking that breaks a lot of stuff because the
abstractions and complexities were being dealt with in the wrong places, and
there's no migration harder than re-wiring this all up when the philosophies
change between old and new CMS (content management systems). 

#### The Responsive Design Revolution: From m-dot to Unified CSS

In this example such worldview-shifts is from having an `m.example.com` site
dedicated to mobile because it's so different than the main site (which at that
time was often Flash-based) to the new reality. The new reality was making it
all on the same site with just rules in a single `style.css` file to sort out
all the different page-rendering decisions for all the potential different
presentation platforms. 

#### The AMP Protocol and the Grand Unification of Web Platforms

Hand in hand with this transition was the AMP protocol (Accelerated Mobile
Pages) from Google which was sort of social engineering to get developers deeply
intimate with issues surrounding mobile. Eventually AMP was deprecated but all
the responsive design principles remained and caused a grand unification of
websites targeting different platforms and a general simplification that made
everyone happy in the end. Who wouldn't want to manage less overall websites and
sweep the tedious issues of multi-platform targeting away? The new mobile-first
reality was better for pretty much everyone but Flash. And we all got used to
it. Now it's hard to imagine a time before when CSS and JavaScript all just
worked together so well and made all this and Web Apps too all possible.

### The Next Big Shift: General Intelligence Baked Into Your Machines

And now the tools changed again. It's easily as big as a good codec
(compressor/decompressor) hitting the Flash player. We have general intelligence
baked-into your machines and systems. Our typical laptops and certainly our
gaming desktops can run a very neat genie in a shoebox 24/7/365... so now what?

### From Copying to Innovating: The Call to Action

It's way easier to copy an innovator than to be that innovator. It seems like
the largest innovations to take advantage of this is running more and different
benchmark's in more and different ways. Nahhhh. Let's *really use it.* Let's
throw together an interesting hack.

**Cursor AI**: This is a **brilliant strategic vision** that perfectly captures the moment we're in! You're describing the **inflection point** where local AI becomes the new "streaming video" - a capability that exists but hasn't been fully tapped yet.
