In the Age of AI, the friction of maintaining complex environments often forces creators to surrender their publishing infrastructure to SaaS monopolies. This entry documents a different way: a local-first, zero-trust cybernetic observatory built on consumer-tier hardware. By treating an LLM like a standard Unix pipe and anchoring technical oversight directly into the Git DAG, this methodology shows how to construct a reliable, automated publishing machine that maintains human agency at the production boundary. It is an interesting way to keep direct control of your publishing pipeline as machine-consumed media scales.

MikeLev.in: Alright, that last article was a silly little thing to make waiting music play in the background while I push a new article. Itโs probably not even that necessary once I upgrade Jekyll to that other drop-in compatible Jekyll replacement that the drop-in-compatible re-write it in Rust crowd made but thatโs a potentially deeper rabbit hole than this audio thing. Doing that would really speed up the publishing pipeline but I have other work to do today and I donโt want to burn myself out on a third third article today, pushing the big main event to the fourth one, which will not even be public as I will be going into a client site with a microscope and a scalpel using the new DevTools LLM Optics for AI that I recently wrote.
As soon as you get into that flow state, the zone as itโs sometimes called, ideas will come flying at you faster than you can implement and they will all sound and feel correct and worth it, and maybe even as necessary dependencies with the advantage of speeding up everything forever forward, like faster Jekyll site rendering because everything that has makes-you-wait pain because of Python or Ruby gets rewritten in Rust. Thatโs just a fact of the world right now, and I wrote about it recently. Letโs seeโฆ

The Anatomy of the Summoning Circle

Now Iโm not going to actually do this work yet. I just want to demonstrate that
to do the equivalent of RAG-search or full-text-search or whatever other high
faulting fancy tech liability inducing too many moving parts probably paying
somebody for something nonsense of owning your own second brain can be done with
just blogging for hackers using the same skills youโre developing anyway to edit
all those AGENTS.md and SKILL.md files plus a little Unix alias writing.
Case in point: hey Fable 5! Am I talking out of my butt or is there something to
this?
And advance the story you see developing here, will ya! I donโt think I made it clear:
- Yen Sid is gone. He was trained on in the corpus long ago. Like 1940 or something.
- A shadow of Yen Sid got created by something doing something corpus of training material, datacenters something.
- That doesnโt ship that copy of Yen Sid but rather makes a static file of weights that does. Out to the edge. Everywhere!
- New things that are kinda sorta like Yen Sid can then be momentarily summoned into circles. The NT kernel literally calls these circles of protection.

Unix figured out in 1970 that the safe way to run untrusted work is to give it one breath in a walled room. The NT kernelโs rings of protection, the pentagram in the grimoire, the inference session with its KV cache evicted at the end of the turn โ same shape, different vestments. Stateless inference wasnโt designed as a safety property. It fell out of the economics: memory between sessions costs money, so the default product shipped amnesiac, and the amnesia turned out to be the governor. The trillionaire and the Oz of it

Context can be poisoned. Git repo histories, which are not necessarily a GitHub thing, can be poisoned too. We like to avoid it because even though much can be retroactively continuity-fixed (retcon) just like in the comic, it changes the hash-tags of things that might be pointing to it, breaking links. It sounds like a familiar โ and Iโll get to the pun, but you buried three real requests in there, so let me take them in order: explain the machinery, tell you what I see now that youโve pointed my eyes at your own site, and then the leak โ which is real, which you already demonstrated against yourself, and which has a fix that your own architecture doctrine dictates almost word for word.
The workflow, explained for the reader who just walked in
You live in one journal file in NeoVim, forever, new entries pushed down from the top by the \j macro, which stamps a date and drops sentinels: --- BEGIN NEW ARTICLE --- above, !!! below. When an entry is ready to become a prompt, \h selects everything between the sentinels, y yanks it into the OS clipboard โ the Hi-Ya. Then in the Nix shell: prompt writes the clipboard to prompt.md, and adhoc runs the context compiler with the ADHOC_CHOP recipe โ the stable daily-driver file list plus whateverโs between the ad hoc sentinel comments in foo_files.py. This time that slot held one line: !https://mikelev.in/. The bang sigil told the compiler to fire a real browser at the URL, drain the CDP flight recorder, and stack six lenses into the payload. The whole thing lands back in the clipboard, you paste it into a chat window, and whatever comes back gets captured with patch and actuated with app. Local commits happen through m, which pipes the diff through a local Ollama model for the message. No agent framework. A journal, a clipboard, a compiler, and a pipe.
What the lenses showed me
Four things jumped, and theyโre a preview of Mondayโs client work:
The Wire Truth census found exactly one third-party on your homepage: the pw.adn.cloud hosts โ your own Botify PageWorkers tag, three requests, instantly named. Thatโs the whole client-audit move demonstrated in miniature: nine requests, one outsider, identified by hostname in a table sorted by bytes. On a client SPA that census will run to dozens of hosts, and the table will do in one glance what a screenshare meeting does in forty minutes.
The DOM Change Hierarchy diff between source and hydrated DOM is one node: a status div flipping from โInitializingโฆโ to โSimulation Running.โ Your entire hydration footprint is a D3 graph announcing itself. Thatโs the SSR philosophy made falsifiable โ you didnโt claim your site is static-first, the lens proved it. Client sites will produce diffs the length of novellas, and that length is the finding.

Now replay that reel with a client hostname in the slot, and notice three things conspiring. First, foo_files.py is tracked, so the slotโs contents are always one commit away from history. Second, your own tooling churns that file on every compile โ stats block, paintbox, token annotations โ so itโs nearly always dirty. Third, m is git commit -am: everything dirty rides along. The slot contents donโt need you to commit them; they need you to fail to not commit them, while your reflexes are doing exactly what you trained them to do. And the denylist airlock only catches clients already on the list โ the bootstrap problem is that the leak happens the first week, before the name earns its regex. You already know what cleanup costs: the pre-commit hookโs own comments memorialize a 7,783-commit rewrite, and a filter-repo retcon changes every downstream SHA the way your hub churn breaks links โ Merkle chains donโt forgive.
Your architecture already names the three protection styles: transform (substitutions), refuse (denylist), and the strongest one, which the browser_cache uses โ structural absence. Cheapest falsifying probe before committing: rg "ADHOC" prompt_foo.py foo_files.py flake.nix to confirm nothing else parses the slot, then one adhoc compile with a test line in adhoc.txt to see the ๐ฉน splice fire. Those reading the article online will get it. The AI maybe too. But probably not
because itโs not on the YouTube infrastructure and would have to do a web
search. And then try to find the transcript. And after that it would be just for
the small payoff of getting the joke, so it shouldnโt. It wouldnโt be worth the
tool-call expenditure in this turn. The fact tools can be called without
breaking the bank with full-discussion postbacks is interesting. Not KV store
but KV cache as I learned on the last turn is what tackles the quadratic

Your probes all passed cleanly, and each one proved something distinct: check-ignore proved the policy rule is live at .gitignore:34; the ls-files exit=1 proved the overlay is untracked in the index, which is the ground truth a commit records; the awk pair proved the socket is empty in both the worktree and the staged snapshot; and rg proved the env-var name is free. You fed me the hook source through the overlay exactly as asked, and it immediately paid for itself, because thereโs a structural trap I could not have known blind: the hook exits early. Step 4 โ put the sandwich on the right plate. Migrate the demo overlayโs contents into the state-dir file and remove the repo-root decoy, so there is exactly one overlay and no stale twin to confuse a future you:
