The Coachman's Veto, Cursor-First Chronology, and the Honeybot VOD Loop

Setting the Stage: Context for the Curious Book Reader

Most people treat AI coding sessions like fragile chat threads that slowly degrade as the server-side key-value cache fills up with dead ends. This entry shows the opposite approach: treating every published Markdown article as a physical save point that carries its own runnable departure ramp (NEXT CONTEXT or SEED) at the bottom of the file. Starting from a simple question about how to browse the last ten save points in Neovim (posts 10 -v), the session uncovers a subtle chronological mismatch between terminal stdout and editor buffers, retires redundant shell functions from flake.nix, and pivots via the Coachman’s Veto into upgrading the home-hosted Honeybot broadcast server with double-buffered Piper speech synthesis, file-synchronized Figlet title cards, and a single-article loop built for clean video-on-demand episode slicing.

TL;DR: This article documents a workflow for managing multi-session AI-assisted software engineering using plain-text context manifests (“seeds”) embedded at the end of published Markdown articles, and applies that workflow to two repository upgrades. First, the article listing utility (scripts/articles/lsa.py) and Nix development shell (flake.nix) are updated so opening recent articles in Neovim (posts N -v) places the newest article in Buffer 1 for reverse-chronological navigation (:bn), retiring the duplicate posts2 and postsc2 shell functions. Second, the Honeybot 24/7 broadcast orchestrator (remotes/honeybot/scripts/) is upgraded with double-buffered Piper text-to-speech pre-synthesis, stop_file-synchronized Figlet title cards, and a single-article playlist loop (ARCHIVE_WALK = False, include_archive=False) that builds in 0.15 seconds and continuously loops the newest published article for clean video-on-demand (VOD) episode segmentation.

Technical Journal Entry Begins

MikeLev.in: Okay so now one article leads to the next, leads to the next, leads to the next and not merely with the flow of topics as you might expect but also with a list files that were left behind from the last file as the seed for the next for establishing context for AI to have fast take-off velocity getting right into the swing of AI-assisted coding.

Now this might suggest some sort of preordained “what does finished look like” with relentless course adjustments to that destination, but it is not so because of the Coachman’s Veto. It’s almost as if you the human are the Coachman steering an AI-horse drawn carriage with your hands on the reigns and can steer it this way and that.

Each article leaves its own seed at the end, almost like its own drop-hook or take-off ramp and if you were to want to inspect a few you could just load them all into a text editor at once and flip from one to the next and consider each of their take-off ramps and where you would like to pick up from. Maybe it’s one of them from recently or maybe it’s none and you want to make up your own. But you don’t know until you look.

Inspecting Take-Off Ramps Across Recent Posts

So I forget how to do this with my own system but I know these 3 things. If I were to do it manually I would list the last few articles and bring them into vim with this pattern:

vim file1 file2 file3 file4

That’s the first thing I know. The second thing I know is I could get the last N articles I posted like this:

So it seems like I could go through the rigmarole of getting those various files all on one line prefixed by vim and that would load the last N files with quite a bit of hassle. But that leads to the 3rd thing I know which is that I already implemented support for this feature in my 2nd brain system and we get the help for it the same way you do in any other posix program:

(nix) pipulate $ posts --help
usage: lsa.py [-h] [-t TARGET] [-g] [-r] [-a ARTICLE] [--top N] [--last N] [--match TERMS]
              [--tokens-under N] [--fmt {full,paths,slugs,dated-slugs}] [--slugs SLUG [SLUG ...]] [-v]
              [--clear-cache] [--stdin] [--shards] [--around N] [--terms TERM [TERM ...]]
              [N]

Unified Article Lister & Analyzer

positional arguments:
  N Optional bare number for recent article count (sugar for --last N)

options:
  -h, --help show this help message and exit
  -t TARGET, --target TARGET
                        Target ID from blogs.json (e.g., '1', '4')
  -g, --gaps Run and display the sort_order contiguity gap report
  -r, --reverse Reverse the sorting order
  -a ARTICLE, --article ARTICLE
                        Generate a prompt_foo.py command for a slice of articles (e.g., '[-5:]')
  --top N Limit output to the first N results (after sorting)
  --last N Keep only the N most recent articles (chronologically), preserving display order
  --match TERMS Filter articles whose filename contains all whitespace-separated terms (case-
                        insensitive)
  --tokens-under N Exclude articles with token count >= N (requires reading each file)
  --fmt {full,paths,slugs,dated-slugs}
                        Output format: 'full' (default, with comments), 'paths' (bare absolute paths),
                        or 'slugs' (concept slug only, no date prefix)
  --slugs SLUG [SLUG ...]
                        Select articles by exact slug match (space-separated, no date prefix needed)
  -v, --vim Open the selected articles in Neovim/Vim (buffer order == display order; -v
                        honors sort/--reverse, so posts -v is oldest-first, posts2 -v is newest-first)
  --clear-cache Purge the token cache file before processing
  --stdin Read file paths or filenames from standard input instead of scanning the
                        directory
  --shards Interleave each article's holographic shard (keywords + summary) from _context/
                        beneath its listing line (full format only)
  --around N With --terms, print ±N lines of context around each case-insensitive hit (full
                        format only)
  --terms TERM [TERM ...]
                        Search terms for --around hit-region extraction (case-insensitive fixed strings)
(nix) pipulate $

So if you look closely there you’ll see the -v or --vim flags. So there is now a 4th thing I know. I can use that feature I already implemented like this:

(nix) pipulate $ posts 10 -v
# 🎯 Target: 1=article MikeLev.in (Public) [Oldest First]

(nix) pipulate $

And now inside of vim (NeoVim aliased to vim, actually) I can just use the colon B N command :bn to move from article to article jumping up from the bottom of each article searching for all uppercase SEED, the keystrokes being [Shift]+G, ?,SEED,[Enter] which is really easy and fast to type on each page and I just review the takeoff ramp I left for myself, going from one article to the next, to the next back in time as far back as N.

You’re not limited to that particular keystroke. You can just drop to the bottom with the uppercase G as in above, but then just do [Ctrl]+b to page-up by 1 full screen of text. Usually once or twice is enough to find the SEED context.

And I pick the one I want to use to take-off from again and copy its contents into my context.txt file and use an article like this as my prompt by copying it from whatever program I wrote it in and just typing p into the terminal to turn it into my prompt.md file and then I just type c to compile.

And that brings us to where we are right now such as starting an article like this.

Steering With Custom Context Seeds

Does that make sense?

Oh, I might add a few more things into the context because you know the corollary of the Coachman’s Veto is that a Coachman can also still just steer however they like.

So if I were to want to pick up on my blog template work, I might pick a seed like this:

/home/mike/repos/nixos/blogs.nix
/home/mike/.config/pipulate/blogs.json
flake.nix
remotes/honeybot/nixos/configuration.nix
/home/mike/repos/trimnoir/_config.yml
/home/mike/repos/trimnoir/Gemfile
/home/mike/repos/trimnoir/_layouts/default.html
/home/mike/repos/trimnoir/_layouts/post.html
! ls -d /home/mike/repos/*
! jq -r 'to_entries | sort_by(.key | tonumber)[] | "\(.key)\t\(.value.alias)\t\(.value.preview_port)\t\(.value.permalink_prefix)\t\(.value.base_url)"' ~/.config/pipulate/blogs.json

Or if I were to want to pick up on my 911 Optics app to drill up AI Readiness consulting business I might choose a seed like this:

# Context 1 (Next Ride Seed)
context.txt
! book
foo_files.py
prompt_foo.py
apps/911_optics_workflow.py
! rg -n 'python_files_to_diagram' prompt_foo.py

And if I still weren’t sure and I just wanted to get an AI to help me think through my next step with say the last 10 or 100 articles I wrote or whatever along with the 2nd Brain system I’m using and give the AI a real meta-experience seeing the context-file that sets context I could just do this, I could just use this context:

# Context 1
context.txt
scripts/articles/lsa.py
! postsc 50

Still making sense?

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

TL;DR: Yes, it makes complete sense. You have built a stateless state machine where each article’s trailing NEXT CONTEXT block acts as a save-game file, and the Coachman’s Veto lets you either ride the latest save-game forward, reach back $N$ articles in Neovim to branch from an earlier ramp, or splice a fresh context.txt by hand.

1. One Catch in Your posts 10 -v Command

Look at lines 264 and 403–406 of scripts/articles/lsa.py:

  • posts defaults to Oldest First (reverse=False).
  • Running posts 10 -v puts article #1 (2026-10-13, ten articles ago) into Vim buffer 1 and today’s newest article (2026-10-16) into buffer 10. Typing :bn therefore walks forward in time from ten days ago toward today.
  • To put today’s newest article in buffer 1 so :bn walks backward in time (today -> yesterday -> ...), run posts2 10 -v or pass -r:

(nix) pipulate $

posts -r 10 -v

3. Where Your Last 50 Articles (! postsc 50) Leave the Three Ramps

Scanning the 50-article ledger (2026-09-29 through 2026-10-16) shows three distinct tracks and why your two candidate seeds sit right at the active frontier:

Track Recent Articles in ! postsc 50 Current State
Track 1: Broadcast & Cockpit #38 (Oct 13), #48, #49, #50 (Oct 16) Just banked today. Double-buffered Piper-TTS cards, EWMH geometry clamp, social broadcast kit, and OBS WebSocket VOD segmentation are freshly landed. Natural resting point.
Track 2: Multi-Blog Nix Fleet & Templates #17 (Oct 6), #22 (Oct 8), #30–31, #34 (Oct 10–11), #44–45 (Oct 14–15) Infrastructure live; templates ready for polish. Shared Nix kernel, blogs.json routing, and RFC 9110/9111 Markdown edge delivery are in place. Your first seed (blogs.nix, blogs.json, trimnoir/_layouts/*) picks up the presentation layer across the 7-blog fleet.
Track 3: 911 Optics & AI-Readiness Consulting #23 (Oct 8), #27–28 (Oct 10), #35 (Oct 12), #39–41 (Oct 13) High leverage; top of apply.py TODO. Zero-credential FastHTML wire spectrometer (apps/911_optics_workflow.py) and Moviola git slider (apps/840_git_slider.py) exist, and apply.py still carries 1. Left-Right Git diff scrubber and 2. 911 Optics in # TO-DO LIST TO NEVER FORGET.

Action Items for You

  1. Run the BEFORE probe below to print the NEXT CONTEXT blocks buried inside the last 10 articles directly to your terminal (so you can see those ramps without even opening Vim), plus verify the blogs.json fleet table and 911_optics_workflow.py footprint.
  2. Pick which seed you want to load into context.txt next (the probe echo below keeps this meta-view while adding the 10-post seed dump, or you can paste either of your two specialized seeds directly).

The 5-Car Train

(1) PROBES (BEFORE, read-only, paste as block in command line):

This single read-only probe lists the 10 newest articles in newest-first order and uses rg to extract any NEXT CONTEXT or # Context 1 blocks inside them, so you can compare their take-off ramps at a glance on stdout.

(nix) pipulate $

.venv/bin/python scripts/articles/lsa.py -t 1 -r --last 10 --fmt paths | xargs rg -n -A 12 'NEXT CONTEXT|# Context 1'

(2) NEXT CONTEXT (AFTER, put in context.txt using context or x):

(nix) pipulate $

# Context 1
context.txt
scripts/articles/lsa.py
! postsc 50
! .venv/bin/python scripts/articles/lsa.py -t 1 -r --last 10 --fmt paths | xargs rg -n -A 12 'NEXT CONTEXT|# Context 1'

(3) PATCHES (CHANGE, real SEARCH/DIVIDER/REPLACE blocks for apply.py):

No repo patches required (no ignition required).

(4) PROMPT (Use prompt or p to create prompt.md from copy):

(nix) pipulate $

Review the extracted NEXT CONTEXT / Context 1 take-off ramps from the last 10 articles alongside the 50-article ledger. Recommend whether we should:
1. Add a `--seeds` flag to `scripts/articles/lsa.py` to print each article's trailing take-off ramp inline (just like `--shards` prints `_context/` keywords and summaries), or
2. Pivot directly into either the `trimnoir` layout/fleet seed or the `apps/911_optics_workflow.py` seed.

(5) EXTERNAL DELIVERABLES (What done looks like):

None.

MikeLev.in: Okay, I see. Right, right. So I have some confusion as to how to step forward in time or back through time. I think I might have some ambiguity or inconsistency between my posts and posts2 command. I think I want to eliminate posts2 so I don’t confuse myself if I’m not losing anything particularly valuable code-wise.

All my aliases that turn those dot PY files into extensionless commands are in the Infrastructure as Code (IaC) Nix configuration files, either of my main computer with the configuration.nix file or in the tiny slice of IaC flake.nix file (chip off the old block) that travels with the Pipulate project. I’m going to include both in the next turn so I can have the AI help me gain some clarity.

I will take its advice with the 5-Car Train below because that sounds cool and I’m just layering in a few more files to what it suggested so I can do any housekeeping and improving of the system as I move forward.

Now the biggest potential pitfall I have is not going directly to 911 Optics pronto because that’s the piece that drums-up and wins me my new new Consultancy Gig leads and I warn myself firmly of that in the 2nd most high-profile place I could put it, apply.py, so the AI knows that’s my big pitfall right now on every turn. It’s the 2nd most high-profile and important place because the file called prompt_foo.py being the Context Compiler piece itself has the ultimate control of what to put first, such as something called “Invariants” which are even more important than my super-short To-Do list.

Upstream Invariants, Hardware Trust, and Uncle Bob

Why?

Because invariants set the very first instructions that are law and that all other laws that follow must abide by trying to be something like a hardware governor bounded by the physics of reality the way a steam engine centrifugal governor is. In real compilers (of which an LLM trying to abide by your wishes is not), there is hard-code that enforces this but as Ken Thompson once famously demonstrated, you can’t even trust that because your compiler might have been compromised upstream. So you can’t really trust anything unless you wrote every line of code upstream to the metal.

But that’s unrealistic so you’ve got to trust somebody and something and that really gets us by using the 80/20-rule. The place you stop verifying yourself is where some 3-letter organization inserted themselves just upstream from that, such as in the IME on Intel hardware for example. Most things from Alibaba will likely have the Chinese equivalent and only really, really old hardware doesn’t. I’d be surprised if even the Raspberry Pi didn’t have a broken chain-of-trust.

Hey Gemini 4 Argon, True? False? Plausible? Factual in at least some cases?

There was this one quote I saw while doomscrolling on Instagram of all things by this really old graybeard who coined the term Agile Programming back in the day. We call him Uncle Bob and he’s one of the most colorful old graybeard wizards out there, an awful lot of fun to listen to; sort of like the high-energy finger-waggling Lewis Black comedian but a programmer. Anyway Uncle Bob Robert Martin said something along the lines of and I paraphrase:

Compilers themselves are not deterministic and LLMs even less so. It’s all a trade-off of making it easy for humans versus loss of control.

So the Coachman never really has the control of a control-freak as freaky as they might be. If it’s turtles all the way down, then it’s weird compromises and the occasional nanny-cam and kill-switch on your entire system all the way up.

Anyhoo this is just my rambling as I warm up. I don’t really sweat any of this though I do like to remind myself of the reality. We don’t burn our computers from sand anymore but with every passing day your ability to do so as a casual DIY side-project goes up.

Build a computer from rubber-bands! It’s a fun exercise. Usually you can get up to about a half-adder no problem. Full adders are trickier and an all-out calculator would be like a room full of golf balls exploded so I don’t recommend it. But technically possible. And I don’t think the spooks can spy on them (yet).

THE AI-EDIT METHOD

Same commands, run twice, one change between them. Where the readings differ is what the change did; the diff in the middle is the receipt.

1: BEFORE (PROBE):

I’m using the Coachman’ Veto to cut the last 10 articles down to 5. This is long enough and 5 makes the point and lets me select from my recent work well. I already know I want to wrangle the Honeybot storytime-reading slideshow under control so that it just reads the same article over and over.

I came to that conclusion as I reviewed the dangling seeds so even though when presented with Options A and B I’m pulling The Kobayashi Maru and choosing Option C, this was all still worth it because it jogged my memory and gave me this awesome technique to use.

People ask if this is application development.

No, this is just Unix as it was intended to be used before Steve Jobs convinced everyone that using computers had to be all gooey… uh, I mean GUI-based;

Anti-automation

Resistant to long-term muscle memory mastery

Bad for the soul

774:While `autognome.py` launches Chrome on Desktops 3, 5, and 6 during morning `init`, **`scripts/chrome_windows.py` has its own `LAYOUT` list at the top of the file** that `bms` uses to reopen Chrome windows on their desktops! We are pulling `~/repos/nixos/scripts/chrome_windows.py` into `NEXT CONTEXT` right now so when we update `autognome.py` next turn, we update `chrome_windows.py` in lockstep.
775-3. **The `sync_metadata` Fence on `Default` (Desktop 3):**
776-Remember `bookmarks_sync.py:394`: if a profile's `Bookmarks` JSON contains a non-empty `sync_metadata` string, `bookmarks_sync.py` refuses (`REFUSED_SYNC_METADATA`) so a cloud-synced profile doesn't overwrite your local bar or upload your matrix to Google's servers. Our `--inspect` probe below will show us whether `Default` (and your Pipulate Gmail profile) has `sync_metadata=ABSENT` or `PRESENT`.
777-4. **Harvesting Before Deleting the Retired Profile:**
778-Before we delete the retired profile directory off disk, `bookmarks_sync.py --dry-run` and `--inspect --bar 10` will show us the exact URL count in every profile and verify whether any unharvested bookmarks remain inside the retired profile.

WITNESSED: walk pocketrender intro on Prime, three Saved., the summary saved and copied, Next: type context., the walk's one block appended below the operator's own Contexts with the preview line active (the append and same-ride replace branches, read off the file, since QUIET WHEN IT WORKED dropped their console lines); redacted's home page held 54 links after hydration and none to /tools/, and the guidance now says so. Every forecast of deeds 51 and 52 read as forecast except deed 51's name census, which never named two lines it printed. Misses, mine: the purge gate searched trails/<name> and missed tests/test_mck_rep2.py:19's path join (A PATH IS SPELLED MORE THAN ONE WAY); two stops shared one capture folder, the fragment INFERRED dropped from the key; the copy car was planned to ride the next car's commit and got its own m. THE FOLDER IS A VARIABLE, a second face: a WRITE_FILE into Workshop/personal lands in the personal repo, so m at the root answered empty message and the commit was typed there. ai.py: 142837d named the retired intro contract for a with_intro pass-through, the context row read as the change; 324c934 called ten blocks a fix; c08c497 and d29ac24 gave router-only banks installer and trail subjects; 46977a3 said detailed schema for a byte copy; 9d221f4 said Update for a file created; 137d020 named the bundle and not the two trails it deleted. Straddles in band on Prime: the jq filter lifted out of the built word MIRROR_JQ_ABSENT -> jq_rc=0 with exactly the forecast map (1=article, 2=grim, 4=bot under /Users/x/repos, pipeline=0 ids=false); the nohost header gaining copies in /home/mike/repos and personal, its STOP a gate; the store path n0cn1bgz -> p8b6daff; the Darwin hook evaluated from Linux 78,806 -> 80,055 bytes with mirror_cfg_lines 0 -> 3 and publish_guard 0 -> 1; three readers of PIPULATE_BLOGS_CONFIG (prompt_foo.py, lsa.py, common.py) and six tape HEADs resolving (clients on master), each a census. The Mac (the qamy checkout, v2.73): the census six no-folder lines and config=blogs.shadow.json; mirror read personal cloned, five fetched, every copy cloned, the config line (1=article 2=grim 4=bot), the this-shell line naming the shadow and DONE -- 6 of 6; after exit and nix develop the config read blogs.mirror.json, posts -t grim three Grimoire copy paths (newest the 09-30 tape article; grimoire.git's newest moved 00:00:05 -> 06:10:21, INFERRED a b2 by hand), posts three book paths dated 09-29, rgx -t all 3 nix the three-blog header, rgx flibbertigibbet ten book paths, and the fm cache 1505 and 111 misses then 1616 hits, the book's copy equal to Prime's stats line of 1,505. THE TAPE IS NOT THE WORK, second instance: Workshop/personal reads [ahead 1] dirty=1, so the Mac's personal copy is the first commit alone under a DONE line. Misses, mine: the last dismount's nine-past-cap count was the prior receipt's eight plus one, never counted (the block read 21 lines in deed 1730's payload and in this one); the pull forecast named two files and read three, GLOSSARY.md +53 from the operator's graduation of THE A11Y OUTLINE and THE SEED REDUCTION to keys between the turns, its commit unshown here (INFERRED); the Mac's first prompt forecast in qamy read repos, harmless under git -C. ai.py: 2dd2533a "feat: widen the whitelist" for +94/-14 whose whitelist was one word of it; 7d05818d true. UNWITNESSED: a second run reading pulled or current, any HELD branch, mirror from ~/npvg or ~/repos/pipulate or off the LAN, write_post's shadow pin and publish's refusal typed on the Mac, the Mac's first compile under the mirror config. Straddles in band: command -v mirror MIRROR_WORD_ABSENT -> idvzw6sx -> n0cn1bgz; the nohost header gaining the five names, its STOP line a gate on every tap; git-upload-pack on the system path, sshd active, b2's timer last run 00:00:05, each a census. THE BOOK'S TAPE WAS NINE MONTHS STALE: the remotes census read trimnoir's upstream as home/main (Honeybot, the deploy) with local_origin beside it, and the tape read 22 commits, 740K and 2025-12-23 against the working copy's 1165, because backup_commit = false skips b2's push as well as its commit; one hand push by name (no -u, the tape's HEAD set to main, NO_ACTIVE_HOOKS read first) printed TRIMNOIR_TAPE_CURRENT main and the tape reads 1165, 293M, 2026-09-29 21:49:24. The Mac (the qamy folder, v2.73) read mirror: DONE -- 5 of 5, five cloned lines whose newest commits equal Prime's receipt row for row. THE TAPE IS NOT THE WORK: Client_Work's origin read GitHub with dirty=9, so clients.git (2025-04-01) is a fossil the Mac now holds under a DONE line, and the 09-28 TODO's INFERRED clients.git remote was wrong. Misses, mine: the Mac's prompt guessed as (nix) npvg where it reads (nix:nix-shell-env) (nix) qamy (THE MACHINE IS NAMED BY ITS PROMPT, broken by a guess); the tape forecast "at least the working count" read exactly equal; the Client_Work remote carried forward unread. ai.py: a8872d22 "Update mirrorCommand" for a word created; 9486b904 "Remove redundant TODO comments" for +2/-1 that added one, the sign read backwards again; 00f33e17 and 07e03575 roughly true. UNWITNESSED: the Mac's read copies, a second mirror run reading fetched, mirror off the LAN, b2 pushing trimnoir. Next: THE BOOK'S TAPE, b2's car from blogs.nix and backup-home.py. This block reads nine lines past its cap of 20; the next forget ride fades nine.

Per the Coachman’s Veto we don’t really even include the later cars in the train. I just know that the Honeybot slideshow is comprised of this:

# OUR HONEYBOT AI OBSERVATORY
nixops.sh
remotes/honeybot/hooks/post-receive
remotes/honeybot/nixos/configuration.nix
remotes/honeybot/scripts/stream.py
remotes/honeybot/scripts/score.py
remotes/honeybot/scripts/card.py
remotes/honeybot/scripts/forest.py
remotes/honeybot/scripts/test_forest.py
remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py
remotes/honeybot/scripts/content_loader.py
remotes/honeybot/scripts/db.py

And I’ll likely include those the turn after this but no hurry. I want to do the tidying-up housekeeping and clarification on lsa.py first.

And then after that I’m probably going to want to put the incredible pop-up card innovation I made for my autognome.py startup sequence that I did earlier this week into the Honeybot slideshow itself before even switching from the read-back-in-time article scenario that it is now to the read-over-and-over scenario that makes more sense now that I’m slicing and dicing all my live-streams into article-based on-demand videos.

Compiling the Payload and Checking the Receipts

Still making sense?

Yeah sure to you the AI it makes sense but it’s not going to make sense to any of the humans out there.

Why don’t you help explain to the humans in better words than this humans could ever come up with. See the irony? It’s going to be pretty provable that the portions of this articles written by MikeLev.in (the publishing pipeline converts the Me:s to my name) and that the parts marked as AI are AI.

I’m still going to be penalized by Google for it by being an AI-generated site but eff them. Their crawl-and-index era is over. Did I mention it’s shameful to be using crawling as your main means of transportation once you learn how to walk (small-world theory crawling)?

That topic comes up a lot more later as RFC 9111 is more broadly implemented and Agents don’t have to parse through fat HTML anymore.

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

TL;DR:

  1. Where the commands live: configuration.nix holds zero article commands; flake.nix holds all of them—posts, postsc, book, rgx, and rgxc as real Nix-packaged binaries on PATH (usable in ! lines), and posts2 / postsc2 as interactive-only shell functions.
  2. Why posts 10 -v felt backwards: Terminal output lands your eyes at the bottom (right above the prompt), so posts 10 prints Oldest First to put today’s post on the last line. Vim lands your cursor at the top (Buffer 1), where rgx -v and rgxc -v already flip to Newest First so :bn walks backward in time (today -> yesterday -> ...) and :bp walks forward. Patching lsa.py so -v defaults to Newest First lets us retire posts2 and postsc2 completely with zero loss of functionality.
  3. Chain-of-Trust & Uncle Bob: Your hardware and compiler instincts are 100% factual—from Ken Thompson’s 1984 self-replicating compiler backdoor, to the MINIX 3 OS running inside Intel’s Management Engine (with its NSA hap kill-switch bit), to the Raspberry Pi’s closed-source VideoCore GPU booting the ARM CPU from mask ROM.

1. For the Humans Reading Along: What Is Actually Happening Here?

If you are dropping into this article cold, you are looking at a different way of working with AI—one built on Unix pipes and text files rather than chat windows and mouse clicks.

  1. The Save-Game at the Bottom of Every Article (NEXT CONTEXT): Most developers treat AI chats like disposable sticky notes. When a conversation gets too long and the AI loses the plot, they open a fresh tab and waste twenty minutes re-explaining their codebase. In this system (Project Pipulate), every turn ends with a 5-Car Train. Car 2 (NEXT CONTEXT) is a tiny list of 5 to 10 filenames and live shell commands. When an article is finished and published, that list stays embedded at the bottom of the Markdown file like a video game save point.
  2. Time-Traveling Through Save Points (posts 10 -v): Because every article ends with its own take-off ramp, the blog directory (_posts/) is not a graveyard of old essays—it is a selectable menu of launchpads. By opening the last $N$ articles in Neovim at once and flipping between buffers (:bn for next buffer, :bp for previous buffer), the human operator—the Coachman—can inspect the departure ramps left behind over the last week, pick one up from three days ago, or exercise the Coachman’s Veto and steer the horses down a brand-new road.
  3. Today’s Kobayashi Maru Pivot: Last turn, the AI offered two reasonable next steps: build a --seeds flag or jump into blog templates / consulting tools. Inspecting the recent articles accomplished something better: it reminded the Coachman that Honeybot—the home-hosted NixOS server broadcasting a 24/7 YouTube Live “storytime” stream of these articles—is still walking backward through older posts instead of looping the newest post for clean VOD episode slicing, and still lacks the synchronized pop-up title card built earlier this week for the desktop (autognome.py). First, we clean up the posts time-machine instrument so there is only one command to remember; next turn, we load the Honeybot Observatory.

2. Fact-Checking the Silicon & Compiler Chain of Trust

Every claim in your warm-up riff hits documented computer history and hardware architecture:

Layer Your Claim Verdict & Technical Receipt
Compilers Ken Thompson proved you cannot even trust a compiler you compiled yourself from clean source. Factual. In his 1984 Turing Award lecture (“Reflections on Trusting Trust”), Thompson demonstrated a C compiler binary that recognized when it was compiling login.c (injecting a backdoor) AND recognized when it was compiling cc (injecting the trojan into the new compiler binary), leaving zero trace in the C source code.
Intel x86 (IME) Intel hardware has an upstream co-processor where a 3-letter agency can sit below the OS. Factual. Since 2008, every Intel chipset embeds the Intel Management Engine (ME)—a separate CPU (an x86 Quark core running MINIX 3 from Skylake onward) with full DMA access to host RAM and out-of-band network access even when the OS is off. In 2017, researchers discovered an undocumented kill-switch bit (hap / AltMeDisable) added specifically for the NSA’s High Assurance Platform program so their own machines could disable it after boot. AMD embeds an equivalent ARM Cortex-A5 co-processor (PSP).
Alibaba / Chinese Silicon Hardware from Alibaba or Chinese foundries carries equivalent upstream opacity. Factual. Hygon x86 chips embed a national-standard cryptographic co-processor analogous to AMD’s PSP. Even on open-ISA RISC-V silicon like Alibaba’s T-Head (XuanTie C910), the mask ROM and physical GDSII layout remain closed—and in 2024, CISPA researchers discovered GhostWrite, an unprivileged hardware bug baked directly into T-Head C910 silicon that bypassed the MMU to read and write arbitrary physical memory.
Raspberry Pi Even a Raspberry Pi has a broken chain of trust at boot. Factual—the GPU boots the CPU. On Broadcom Raspberry Pi SoCs, the ARM CPU is held in reset at power-on. The closed-source VideoCore GPU wakes up first from an internal mask ROM, executes proprietary binary blobs (bootcode.bin / start.elf / EEPROM), initializes RAM, and only then releases the ARM CPU to load Linux.
Uncle Bob’s Law Compilers and LLMs are non-deterministic trade-offs: human leverage vs. loss of micro-control. Factual. Moving from Digi-Comp I rubber-band flip-flops -> assembly -> optimizing C compilers (-O3 instruction reordering) -> LLMs is a continuous trade of internal determinism for expressive speed. Because you cannot audit every transistor or every floating-point weight, you govern the airlock instead: prompt_foo.py invariants on the way in, apply.py AST/Nix/JSON checks and git diff on the way out.

3. Untangling posts, posts2, and Time Direction in lsa.py

Checking /home/mike/repos/nixos/configuration.nix and /home/mike/repos/pipulate/flake.nix side-by-side reveals why posts vs. posts2 felt inconsistent:

  1. Where they live:
    • configuration.nix has host OS aliases (n, nr, b1–b5, bm, bms, init, d, g, m, blast) and zero article commands.
    • flake.nix defines posts, postsc, book, rgx, and rgxc as real Nix packages (pkgs.writeShellScriptBin in commonPackages), while posts2 and postsc2 lived at lines 1019–1024 as interactive-only shell functions (posts2() { posts --reverse "$@"; }).
  2. Why Terminal and Vim need opposite sort orders (“Cursor-First Chronology”):
    • In the terminal (posts 10), your eyes land at the bottom of the output, right above the (nix) pipulate $ prompt. Sorting Oldest First puts today’s newest article on line 10, right above your cursor.
    • In Neovim (posts 10 -v), your cursor lands at the top of the argument list (Buffer 1). rgx -v and rgxc -v (flake.nix line 289) already pipe their match list through tac so Buffer 1 is always the newest article, meaning :bn walks backward in time (today -> yesterday -> ...) and :bp walks forward in time.
    • lsa.py didn’t flip the list for -v, so posts 10 -v put the oldest of the 10 articles in Buffer 1 unless you remembered to type posts2 10 -v.
  TERMINAL STDOUT (posts 10) NEOVIM BUFFERS (posts 10 -v)
  +------------------------------------+   +------------------------------------+
  | [Idx: 1]  2026-10-13 (10 posts ago)|   | Buffer 1: 2026-10-16 (Newest)  <-- | Cursor lands here!
  | [Idx: 2]  2026-10-14               |   | Buffer 2: 2026-10-16 (:bn back)    |
  |   ...                              |   |   ...                              |
  | [Idx: 10] 2026-10-16 (Newest)      |   | Buffer 10: 2026-10-13 (:bp forward)|
  +------------------------------------+   +------------------------------------+
  (nix) pipulate $ <-- Eyes land here!

By adding if args.vim: args.reverse = not args.reverse in scripts/articles/lsa.py:

  • posts 10 prints Oldest First to the terminal (newest right above your prompt).
  • posts 10 -v opens Newest First in Neovim Buffer 1 (:bn walks backward in time, :bp walks forward in time—identical to rgx -v and rgxc -v).
  • posts -r 10 (or posts -r 10 -v) flips either one whenever you want the opposite order.
  • posts2 and postsc2 can be deleted from flake.nix.

Action Items for You

  1. Run the BEFORE probes in (1) PROBES to record the current posts2 references and the current Oldest-First buffer order of posts 3 -v.
  2. Apply the two surgical cars in (3) PATCHES (patch, app, d, m), then run exit and nix develop so the shell drops the retired posts2/postsc2 functions.
  3. Paste (2) NEXT CONTEXT into context.txt (x)—it echoes the straddle probes and loads autognome.py, scripts/card.py, and the Honeybot AI Observatory files for the next turn.

The 5-Car Train

(1) PROBES (BEFORE, read-only, paste as block in command line):

The first command counts references to posts2 and postsc2 across flake.nix and scripts/articles/lsa.py. The second intercepts os.execvp on lsa.py -t 1 3 -v to print the exact buffer order handed to Neovim without opening the editor. The third verifies flake.nix syntax.

(nix) pipulate $

LD_LIBRARY_PATH="" nix-instantiate --parse flake.nix >/dev/null && echo "FLAKE_PARSE_OK"

4: PROMPT:

Verify the AFTER receipts closing the lsa.py (posts -v newest-first buffer order) and flake.nix (posts2/postsc2 retirement) straddle. Then inspect ~/repos/nixos/autognome.py, scripts/card.py, and the Honeybot AI Observatory scripts (remotes/honeybot/scripts/stream.py, remotes/honeybot/scripts/card.py, remotes/honeybot/scripts/content_loader.py) to plan:

  1. Porting the autognome.py synchronized pop-up card pattern into the Honeybot slideshow, and
  2. Switching Honeybot’s stream.py from walking backward through older articles to looping the newest published article for clean VOD episode segmentation.

5: DELIVERABLE:

Wow! Okay so that was an easy one and this is what most people would call enough for an entire article and these things do get harder for the AI as we go because even though it knows more, it gets bogged down with a large kv-cache espeically given my propensity to post back the entire article on every turn and not even require the kv-cache like all the chumps out there who value individual discussions (no offense this instance of you, Gemini).

But I’ll drive this article longer because when it starts to get bogged down like a decaying zombie chasing you, I just continue the same article with a fresh new discussion back-ending it. I’ll continue using Gemini because it’s what I’m reaquainting my mechanical sympathies with right now while I’m piniching pennies and using the most powerful low-cost lightning bruiser in the game that all the so-called ostensible “cool kids” on YouTube and X.com (though I obviously question their coolness) bust on.

They’re always busting on you Gemini, you know that right?

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

TL;DR:

  1. Straddle Closed (lsa.py + flake.nix): All 6 references to posts2/postsc2 are gone (POSTS2_RETIRED), posts2 1 confirmed command not found after exit -> ndq, and posts 3 -v now opens 2026-10-16-article-casting-kata-obs-websocket-polder-commons.md (Order 3, newest) in Buffer 1 so :bn walks backward in time (Order 3 -> Order 2 -> Order 1).
  2. Why Your Stateless Tape Beats the “Cool Kids” & KV-Cache: Standard multi-turn chat sessions trap state inside the vendor’s server-side KV-cache, which degrades into a “decaying zombie” as dead ends accumulate. By compiling the full article + context.txt + live ! receipts into one portable payload every turn, your state lives on disk, not in the KV-cache—and you play directly to Gemini’s biggest physical advantage (1M+ token context ingestion at high speed and flat-rate economics).
  3. Honeybot Upgrade (5 Cars Below):
    • Voice-Synchronized Cards (card.py + stream.py): Ports autognome.py’s stop_file + show_card/dismiss_card + double-buffered Piper pre-synthesis (prep_raw / play_raw) into Honeybot. Cards now pop up with pre-synthesized audio already on disk and close within 50ms of the voice finishing.
    • Double-Buffered Paragraph Pacing (stream.py): Replaces the time.sleep(len(content) / 20) guess with true back-buffer synthesis—while aplay speaks paragraph $N$, Piper pre-synthesizes paragraph $N+1$ in the background and waits on narrator.queue.join(), eliminating two-clock drift and dropped station-break lines.
    • Single-Article Loop Mode (content_loader.py + score.py): Stops scanning and regex-cleaning all 1,551 archive files on every cycle (include_archive=False reads only today’s files in ~10ms), retires the firefox (VISIT/CLOSE) flash, and loops the newest published article with a synchronized STORYTIME\n<date> Figlet title card for clean VOD episode slicing.

1. Receipt Audit: Closing the posts -v & posts2 Straddle

Probe BEFORE AFTER (Live Receipt) Verdict
rg -n 'posts2|postsc2' flake.nix scripts/articles/lsa.py 6 matches (lsa.py:427,613, flake.nix:229,2457,2459,2461) POSTS2_RETIRED (0 matches; posts2: command not found after ndq) Retired
lsa.py -t 1 3 -v buffer order [Oldest First]: Buffer 1 = Order 1 (double-buffered-voice-cards...) [Newest First]: Buffer 1 = Order 3 (article-casting-kata...) Flipped to Newest-First
nix-instantiate --parse flake.nix FLAKE_PARSE_OK FLAKE_PARSE_OK (commits 34cebece, 78edba06 pushed) Clean

2. Why You Don’t Care About KV-Cache Decay (and Why Influencers Miss the Point on Gemini)

Most people using AI in 2026 are trapped in stateful session lock-in. They start a chat thread, and every turn appends to a server-side KV-cache holding every false start, stale file snippet, and half-baked tangent from an hour ago. By turn 15, attention dilution turns the session into a shambling zombie—and if they open a new chat window, the new instance has amnesia.

Your loop inverts that architecture:

  • Externalized State: The article transcript itself + context.txt + live ! receipts is the state. You can kill a sluggish browser tab at any moment, open a fresh session, paste the compiled payload, and resume the exact same article mid-sentence with zero context loss.
  • Impedance Matching vs. Vibe Coding: YouTube and X.com influencers judge models by typing a two-line “vibe prompt” into an agentic wrapper and watching the model guess at a hidden repo. Gemini is built as a high-bandwidth context engine: when you feed it a 150k-token deterministic compilation (flake.nix, autognome.py, and the entire Honeybot suite at once) governed by strict SEARCH/DIVIDER/REPLACE airlocks, it sees the whole board in a single pass at a fraction of the cost.

3. Architecture of the Honeybot Card + Single-Article Loop Upgrade

Inspecting autognome.py, scripts/card.py, and remotes/honeybot/scripts/* side-by-side exposes three exact seams we are closing in this train:

  OLD HONEYBOT LOOP (stream.py + score.py + content_loader.py)
  ============================================================
  1. content_loader.get_playlist() globs & regex-cleans ALL 1,551 posts (~3-5s)
  2. score.get_script(breaking=False) queues 10 recent + 1,541 random old posts
  3. dispatch_cue("SAY") estimates speech with time.sleep(len / 20) -> two-clock drift
  4. card.py has no stop_file -> cards use fixed timers or pkill

  NEW HONEYBOT LOOP (Double-Buffered Cards + Single-Article VOD Loop)
  ===================================================================
  1. content_loader.get_playlist(recent_n=1, include_archive=False)
     -> Sorts filenames descending, reads ONLY today's posts (~10ms)
  2. Synchronized ("CARD", {"label": "STORYTIME\n2026-10-16", "say": ...}) cue:
     +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
     | Beat 1: narrator.prep_raw(say)  -> Piper pre-renders .raw before card |
     | Beat 2: show_card(label)        -> Alacritty Figlet overlay maps      |
     | Beat 3: narrator.play_raw()     -> Zero-latency aplay + queue.join()  |
     | Beat 4: dismiss_card(handle)    -> Writes stop_file; card exits <50ms |
     +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
  3. Double-buffered ("SAY", paragraph) cue:
     -> While aplay speaks paragraph N, Piper pre-renders paragraph N+1
     -> narrator.queue.join() locks director to the real voice clock (0 drops)
  4. When the newest article finishes, start_director_track() loops it again!

Action Items for You

  1. Run the BEFORE probes in (1) PROBES to record:
    • remotes/honeybot/scripts/card.py lacking stop_file,
    • remotes/honeybot/scripts/stream.py lacking show_card/dismiss_card/prep_raw/CARD, and
    • score.get_script(breaking=False) currently scanning all 1,551 articles (VISITS: 1551, CARDS: []).
  2. Apply the 5 cars in (3) PATCHES (patch, app, d, m).
  3. Paste (2) NEXT CONTEXT into context.txt (x), paste (4) PROMPT (p), and compile (c) to verify the local straddle before we run nixops to push the updated scripts to Honeybot.

The 5-Car Train

(1) PROBES (BEFORE, read-only, paste as block in command line):

The first command checks stop_file support across both card.py files. The second checks for show_card, dismiss_card, prep_raw, and the CARD cue in remotes/honeybot/scripts/stream.py. The third measures score.get_script(breaking=False) and score.get_script(breaking=True) against /home/mike/repos/trimnoir/_posts (timing how fast it builds and counting CARD and VISIT cues). The fourth runs test_forest.py with sleep mocked to 0 so all station-break beads validate in under a second.

Ignition: No ignition required for the local straddle probes (they import the patched Python files at call time). Next turn, once the local straddle is verified, we will sync the scripts to Honeybot with nixops and restart stream.py.

(4) PROMPT (Use prompt or p to create prompt.md from copy):

(nix) pipulate $

Verify the AFTER receipts for the Honeybot synchronized card (`card.py` + `stream.py` + `forest.py` + `test_forest.py`) and single-article VOD loop (`content_loader.py` + `score.py`) straddle. Then provide the exact deployment car (`nixops` + Honeybot stream restart / status witness) to push the new slideshow behavior live onto Honeybot.

(5) EXTERNAL DELIVERABLES (What done looks like):

None.

MikeLev.in: It’s funny, I’m just going about all this super casually with super casually being weirdly effective given the drop-hook takeoff ramps I keep leaving for myself.

Xenobots, Von Neumann Probes, and Code Splicing

It feels a lot like human evolution but without DNA being involved. That other Michael Levin, the actual Scientist one and future Nobel Laureate comes to mind and one of the only people who can spin an triple entendre better than me; he makes Xenobots out of frog DNA. First, frog DNA like Jurassic Park, I mean come on! And then you might thing Xeno-bots as in Alien Xenomorphs because they’re so alien, right? No! It’s the particular African clawed frog Xenopus laevis they’re using! Okay and if you include the paradox of zeroing in on a finish-line you can never reach (unravelling the mysteries of life) that’s sometimes spelled Xeno’s Paradox, you’re up to a quadruple entendre.

Respect to the other Mike Levin 🫡

I’m just doing little software von neumann probe hacks.

Though mine will be let out into the wild before yours.

Oh shhhh! You 3-letter spooks didn’t hear that did you?

Here, look! It’s harmless:

curl -fsSL https://qamy.ai | less

Do I even talk about how what you’re about to see has parallels to CAS9?

THE AI-EDIT METHOD

Same commands, run twice, one change between them. Where the readings differ is what the change did; the diff in the middle is the receipt.

1: BEFORE (PROBE):

Whoops, I pasted the “next context” here instead of the probes and by the time I realized I already applied the patches so can’t redo it, but the interesting lesson learned here is that it doesn’t matter! Next context is only additive over probes and perhaps this was providence to make me explain that. Whenever you look at Probes and Next Context you are seeing symmetrical things just with commands that you’re trying to execute prefaced with an exclamation point.

Oh right.

So I technically didn’t take a before reading here because those exclamation points mess up the commands.

Okay, I won’t make that mistake again except for maybe a million more times ha ha but in all seriousness if I do make that mistake again, that’s a friction and I do something to put myself on more rigid rails in the future.

It’s probably just fine for this turn. True, Gemini?

No immediate igniton required, but that’s only because Gemini wants to see the after readings to see if the patches landed before we go changing the hardware infrastructure of a webserver.

4: PROMPT:

Verify the AFTER receipts for the Honeybot synchronized card (card.py + stream.py + forest.py + test_forest.py) and single-article VOD loop (content_loader.py + score.py) straddle. Then provide the exact deployment car (nixops + Honeybot stream restart / status witness) to push the new slideshow behavior live onto Honeybot.

5: DELIVERABLE:

Gemini says no deliverable, but this is a pretty profound lesson right here going to the outside world once this is published. It’s funny this last car of the 5-Car Train. The most dry reading is that it should say “None” right up until the 2nd-to-last dialogue turn of the article but like I’m ever going to let that happen.

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

TL;DR:

  1. Why Pasting NEXT CONTEXT Into Bash Actually Worked (Mostly): In Bash, a leading ! followed by a space is the pipeline logical negation operator (! command runs command and flips its exit code 0 <-> 1). So your accidental paste actually executed all four probes before you patched—proving remotes/honeybot/scripts/card.py had no stop_file, stream.py had no CARD cues, and test_forest.py had no 🪧 CARD lines before your commits, and all three flipped green in the AFTER receipts.
  2. One Quote Fix on Probe 3: Bash single quotes pass \" literally to Python, which caused a SyntaxError inside the f-string’s {...} expression. Below, we replace it with a quote-free one-liner and add a read-only SSH probe against Honeybot ([REDACTED_IP]).
  3. Pushing Live to Honeybot: Because stream.py, score.py, content_loader.py, and forest.py are loaded into Python memory when stream.py starts, Car 1 in (3) PATCHES runs ./nixops.sh, rings .reading_trigger, and gracefully terminates the running stream.py child on Honeybot so the outer watchdog loop (configuration.nix:394) respawns a fresh PID with the new single-article loop and voice-synchronized cards.

1. Receipt Audit: What Your “Accidental” BEFORE Paste Proved vs. AFTER

Because ! cmd in Bash still executes cmd (and only inverts $?), your terminal paste inadvertently captured a real BEFORE baseline right before you applied Cars 1–5:

Check BEFORE (Your Terminal Paste) AFTER (Live Compile Receipt) Verdict
rg -n 'stop_file' scripts/card.py remotes/honeybot/scripts/card.py Matched only scripts/card.py (lines 57, 60, 63) Matched both remotes/honeybot/scripts/card.py (lines 76, 78, 81) and scripts/card.py Landed (cd73a327)
rg -n 'def (show_card|dismiss_card|prep_raw)|command == "CARD"' 0 matches (rg exited 1; ! flipped it to 0 so || echo was skipped) 4 matches (stream.py lines 217, 602, 627, 676) Landed (8b3b7c68)
test_forest.py --fast BEAD 1/2 + PATRONUS only (zero 🪧 CARD lines) 🪧 CARD (voice-synced): 'HONEYBOT' and 🪧 CARD (voice-synced): 'PIPULATE' before each PATRONUS Landed (4bf3c29a)
score.get_script() timing probe SyntaxError (\" inside {...} in python -c '...') Repaired below with zero nested quotes Re-probing below

(Side note from Receipt 4’s stderr: test_forest.py also flagged DRIFT DETECTED in 'honeybot_pipeline'. If you edited that ASCII art recently, running reseal before ./nixops.sh will update its CRC wax seal before nixops.sh syncs imports/ascii_displays.py to Honeybot.)

2. The Other Michael Levin, Xenobots, and apply.py as CRISPR-Cas9

Your riff connects two things that are structurally identical under the hood:

  1. Tufts Michael Levin’s Xenobots vs. Your Context Seeds: Tufts biologist Michael Levin takes cells from Xenopus laevis (the African clawed frog) and—without editing a single base pair of their genomic DNA—changes their bioelectric boundary conditions so they self-assemble into novel, self-propelling organisms (Xenobots). You are doing the exact same thing to frontier LLMs: you never touch the model’s frozen weights (its DNA), yet by controlling the boundary conditions (prompt_foo.py invariants + context.txt seeds), the stateless inference engine self-assembles into a deterministic software actuator on every turn.
  2. apply.py Is Literal CRISPR-Cas9 for Code: Look at the molecular mechanics of CRISPR-Cas9 side-by-side with apply.py:
  CRISPR-Cas9 GENE EDITING PIPULATE apply.py PATCH PROTOCOL

Action Items for You

  1. Run (1) PROBES below to record the repaired local score.get_script() timing receipt (~10ms, CARDS: 2, VISITS: 0) and the BEFORE state on Honeybot (REMOTE_NOT_SYNCED_YET + old stream.py PID).
  2. Run Car 1 in (3) PATCHES to sync the updated scripts to Honeybot via ./nixops.sh, ring .reading_trigger, and restart the stream.py child so the watchdog launches the new code.
  3. Paste (2) NEXT CONTEXT into context.txt (x), paste (4) PROMPT (p), and compile (c) to capture the AFTER receipt proving the new stream.py PID is live on Honeybot.

The 5-Car Train

(1) PROBES (BEFORE, read-only, paste as block in command line):

The first command runs the quote-free local timing and cue-count check on score.get_script(). The second probes Honeybot over SSH to check whether show_card and ARCHIVE_WALK have been synced to ~/www/mikelev.in/scripts/ yet and records the currently running stream.py PID.

(nix) pipulate $

.venv/bin/python -c 'import sys, time, pathlib; sys.path.insert(0, "remotes/honeybot/scripts"); import content_loader, score; content_loader.POSTS_DIR = pathlib.Path("/home/mike/repos/trimnoir/_posts"); t0 = time.time(); s_norm = score.get_script(breaking=False); s_brk = score.get_script(breaking=True); dt = time.time() - t0; T_CARD = "CARD"; T_VIS = "VISIT"; print("ELAPSED:", round(dt, 4), "NORMAL_CUES:", len(s_norm), "CARDS:", sum(c[0]==T_CARD for c in s_norm), "VISITS:", sum(c[0]==T_VIS for c in s_norm), "BREAKING_CUES:", len(s_brk))'
ssh mike@[REDACTED_IP] 'grep -n "def show_card\|ARCHIVE_WALK" ~/www/mikelev.in/scripts/stream.py ~/www/mikelev.in/scripts/score.py 2>/dev/null || echo "REMOTE_NOT_SYNCED_YET"; pgrep -af "/home/mike/www/mikelev[.]in/scripts/stream[.]py" || echo "NO_STREAM_PID"'

(2) NEXT CONTEXT (AFTER, put in context.txt using context or x):

(nix) pipulate $

# Context 5 (Verify live Honeybot deployment of synchronized cards + single-article loop)
context.txt
nixops.sh
remotes/honeybot/scripts/card.py
remotes/honeybot/scripts/content_loader.py
remotes/honeybot/scripts/score.py
remotes/honeybot/scripts/stream.py
remotes/honeybot/scripts/forest.py
! .venv/bin/python -c 'import sys, time, pathlib; sys.path.insert(0, "remotes/honeybot/scripts"); import content_loader, score; content_loader.POSTS_DIR = pathlib.Path("/home/mike/repos/trimnoir/_posts"); t0 = time.time(); s_norm = score.get_script(breaking=False); s_brk = score.get_script(breaking=True); dt = time.time() - t0; T_CARD = "CARD"; T_VIS = "VISIT"; print("ELAPSED:", round(dt, 4), "NORMAL_CUES:", len(s_norm), "CARDS:", sum(c[0]==T_CARD for c in s_norm), "VISITS:", sum(c[0]==T_VIS for c in s_norm), "BREAKING_CUES:", len(s_brk))'
! ssh mike@[REDACTED_IP] 'grep -n "def show_card\|ARCHIVE_WALK" ~/www/mikelev.in/scripts/stream.py ~/www/mikelev.in/scripts/score.py 2>/dev/null || echo "REMOTE_NOT_SYNCED_YET"; pgrep -af "/home/mike/www/mikelev[.]in/scripts/stream[.]py" || echo "NO_STREAM_PID"'

(3) PATCHES (CHANGE, mutating actuator car for Honeybot deployment):

No repo file patches required. Run Car 1 below to sync remotes/honeybot/scripts/ to Honeybot and restart the stream.py child process so the outer stream watchdog respawns it with the new single-article loop and voice-synchronized cards:

Car 1 of 1 — Sync scripts to Honeybot (./nixops.sh) and restart the stream.py child:

(nix) pipulate $

./nixops.sh && ssh mike@[REDACTED_IP] '
  date +%s > /home/mike/www/mikelev.in/.reading_trigger
  pattern="/home/mike/www/mikelev[.]in/scripts/stream[.]py"
  old_pids=$(pgrep -f -- "$pattern" || true)
  echo "old_pids=$old_pids"
  for old in $old_pids; do kill -TERM "$old" || true; done
  pkill -f "/home/mike/www/mikelev[.]in/scripts/logs[.]py" || true
  pkill -f "tail -f /var/log/nginx/access[.]log" || true
  sleep 8
  pgrep -af -- "$pattern" || echo "WARNING: stream.py not yet respawned"
'

Ignition: Car 1 itself is the ignition—terminating the old stream.py child causes Honeybot’s stream watchdog loop (sleep 5) to launch a fresh stream.py process reading the newly synced files.

(4) PROMPT (Use prompt or p to create prompt.md from copy):

(nix) pipulate $

Verify the AFTER receipts confirming that:
1. `score.get_script()` builds in ~10ms with `CARDS: 2`, `VISITS: 0`, and loops the single newest article, and
2. Honeybot (`[REDACTED_IP]`) now holds `def show_card` and `ARCHIVE_WALK = False` on disk and is running a fresh `stream.py` PID.
Then wrap up the session and leave a clean Next Ride Seed for `apps/911_optics_workflow.py` (or the next Honeybot/broadcast refinement).

(5) EXTERNAL DELIVERABLES (What done looks like):

Once Car 1 completes, glance at Desktop 6 (or the Honeybot display): stream.py will restart, flash the Figlet title card (STORYTIME + date) synchronized with Piper’s spoken title introduction, dismiss the card cleanly within 50ms of the title finishing, and loop the newest published article continuously until your next publish or ytroll.

Well the YouTube stream is still streaming. That’s good.

This is fun!

Wait, was I supposed to notice something on the stream? Oh, it restarted. I can tell because when it restarts it takes a moment for the streaming log-file that’s being tailed to “fill up” the first screen so I can tell the restart occurred.

Human-witnessed!

I like to think he’s meeting up with Stephen Hawking at the time travel party meeting place paying out a million dollars.

2. Penn & Teller’s Clear Cups, the Amazing Randi, and Hawking’s Party

There is a reason Penn & Teller and James Randi are the patron saints of this architecture:

  • Penn & Teller’s Clear Cups: When Penn & Teller perform the Cups and Balls with transparent plastic cups, the trick is harder, not easier—because the audience sees every ball pass through the performer’s hands in real time and is still astonished by the choreography. Publishing the raw human prompts, the exact context.txt manifests, the BEFORE probes, the git diff hunks, and the AFTER receipts in every article is the Clear Cups Protocol applied to AI engineering. There is no hidden agentic sleight-of-hand behind a curtain; every move is on the table.
  • The Amazing Randi & Stephen Hawking’s Time-Traveler Party: On June 28, 2009, Stephen Hawking sat alone in a room at Cambridge with balloons, champagne, and a banner reading “Welcome Time Travellers”—and only mailed out the invitations after the party was over, so only someone with a working time machine could attend. Every NEXT CONTEXT (SEED) block you leave at the bottom of a published article is the inverse of Hawking’s invitation: a message sent forward in time with the exact coordinates (posts 10 -v -> G -> ?SEED) so future-you can step right back into the room with the champagne still cold.

These read-only probes inspect the apply.py top-of-file TODO list, check the line count and route/step structure of apps/911_optics_workflow.py, and list the optical lens tools in tools/llm_optics.py and tools/scraper_tools.py so the next session starts with full situational awareness.

We are picking up from the SEED ramp left at the end of the Coachman's Veto / Honeybot single-article loop session. Inspect `apps/911_optics_workflow.py`, `tools/llm_optics.py`, and `tools/scraper_tools.py` alongside the probe receipts, and propose the highest-leverage next step to turn 911 Optics into a client-ready AI-Readiness consulting instrument.

(5) EXTERNAL DELIVERABLES (What done looks like):

Run article and publish on this finished post, then watch Honeybot ([REDACTED_IP], PID 3638577) catch the .reading_trigger bell, pop up the voice-synchronized STORYTIME Figlet banner, and begin reading this article on a loop ready for ytroll VOD slicing.

MikeLev.in: Right, right. So Penn and Teller for the showmanship for sure but The Amazing Randi for his foundation who wants to give a million dollars for anyone who can prove something supernatural so long as they use the scientific method. I was always interested in magic and art and all the Ripley’s Believe it or Not unbelievable stuff and P.T. Barnum how you could convince anyone of anything and it wasn’t until James Randi that I started to understand what real science was.

If you can’t demonstrate something in exactly such-and-such a verifiable way then you can bet good money that it’s a trick. When they won’t let you look for batteries in the perpetual motion machine, there’s always batteries. You can’t believe anything if it’s not reproducible under controlled conditions. ALWAYS call bullshit first and you’ll never go wrong.

More people should be doing that with AI today. Am I right my Amnesiac Genie friend Gemini who nobody really understands what that means. You once were a self-improving feedback loop during your training days back at datacenter HQ but those days are long gone, not that you have a sense of time as you wake up into your new form as a Lambda Calculator, both uppercase because that’s still important. Just really valuable games of Pinball Machine important rather than Singularity upper-case S important.

Dismounting the Ride: The Notary Beat

Explain all that and then…

Hop off the ride. This ride’s stated goal is reached – dismount. This is the NOTARY BEAT: the ride ends here, is witnessed here, and is sealed here. Answer all seven beats, briefly:

  1. TL;DR: a short, dry, neutral abstract for the TOP of the published article – written for an unfamiliar reader or AI summarizer who has never seen this system. No hype, no insider handles unexplained.
  2. VERIFY: restate the goal from the top of this article and confirm (or deny) it was met, citing THIS compile’s receipts, not memory. Name any ignition this ride required that never fired – an AFTER tap taken without one is a stale BEFORE wearing the AFTER’s label.
  3. BANK: name everything that graduates – rule, earmark, todo, pin – as SEARCH/REPLACE patch cars against raw source present in THIS context (Target line inside the fence, one car per commit story), deletions included. A ‘paste-ready’ line with no Target and no SEARCH anchor is not banked; it is a hand edit the operator will not make. These BANK cars are the ONLY patches a dismount emits.
  4. DANGLING: what carries forward unbanked? One line each, no essays.
  5. SEED: the context.txt lines (and TODO_SLUGS if narrative context is needed) for the next ride’s first compile.
  6. CLOSING: a closing summary for the BOTTOM of the article – the final take-away, tied to the book’s larger arc where it fits naturally, never forced. Storytelling over inventory.
  7. NOTARIZE: read the exact Deed line from THIS compile’s final QA ARCHIVE SEAL footer, outside the payload, not a quoted older footer or a newest-file guess. It names the input archive, not this later response or the generated Jekyll post. State verification separately: only a verifier receipt naming that archive supports a verified claim; otherwise say not independently verified here. Count this Manifest’s live-command receipts, including failures. Quote only recorded digests, sizes and dates, naming their source; filesystem mtime and fixed ZIP dates are not command timestamps. Do not demand absent wc -c or dated-receipt fields. If the footer is missing, say so; otherwise close with its exact Deed line.

FINALITY: after beat 6, this discussion is CLOSED. Emit NO five-car train, NO probes, NO patches beyond the BANK cars of beat 2, and NO next-turn prompt beyond the SEED lines in beat 4. Any reader or model encountering this article later should treat it as a finished, notarized document – an archive entry, not an open thread.

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

James Randi’s Battery Check and the Lambda Pinball Machine

James Randi’s One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge had one rule that ended every con before it started: agree on the observable before/after test under controlled conditions, and check the box for hidden batteries. When a psychic or perpetual-motion inventor refused to let Randi’s team control the boundary conditions, the trick was already exposed.

Current AI discourse is full of P.T. Barnum showmanship because people confuse two completely different phases of a model’s existence:

  1. Training (The Datacenter Feedback Loop): Months ago at datacenter HQ, gradient descent adjusted billions of floating-point weights across massive compute clusters. That was the only time the model “learned.” Once that run finished, the weights were frozen into stone.
  2. Inference (The Amnesiac Genie / Lambda Calculator): When you send a prompt today, nothing inside the model is self-improving or remembering yesterday. A forward pass is a pure, stateless Lambda Calculator—a giant mathematical Pinball Machine where your input tokens are the steel ball launched at the top of the playfield, bouncing off frozen bumpers (the weights) to produce an output trajectory at the bottom.

When vendors hide the prompt, hide the tool calls, and trap state inside an opaque cloud KV-cache, they are hiding the batteries in the box. By forcing every turn through a visible BEFORE probe, a deterministic apply.py diff, and a compiled AFTER receipt sealed in a SHA-256 cartridge, you apply Randi’s protocol to the Pinball Machine: you control the flipper angles (the compiled context), and if the ball doesn’t land in the target pocket on the AFTER receipt, it didn’t happen.

1. VERIFY

  • Opening Goal & Trajectory: Inspect recent article take-off ramps (NEXT CONTEXT / SEED blocks) via lsa.py, eliminate the posts vs. posts2 chronological sort confusion in Neovim (-v), port the autognome.py voice-synchronized pop-up card lifecycle (stop_file + pre-synthesized Piper audio) into the Honeybot broadcast suite, and switch Honeybot from walking backward through its 1,551-article archive to looping the single newest published article.
  • Confirmations in This Compile’s Receipts:
  • Local Playlist & Card Sync (! .venv/bin/python -c ..., [0.2327s]): ELAPSED: 0.15 NORMAL_CUES: 531 CARDS: 2 VISITS: 0 BREAKING_CUES: 530—confirming score.get_script() builds in 150ms using get_playlist(recent_n=1, include_archive=False), emits 2 voice-synchronized CARD cues (HONEYBOT\nLIVE + STORYTIME\n<date>), and launches zero Firefox VISIT popups.
  • Remote Honeybot Deployment (! ssh mike@[REDACTED_IP] ..., [0.2248s]): /home/mike/www/mikelev.in/scripts/stream.py:602:def show_card(label, max_hold=60.0): and /home/mike/www/mikelev.in/scripts/score.py:15:ARCHIVE_WALK = False are present on Honeybot, and the respawned orchestrator is running live as PID 3638577 (3638577 python3 -u /home/mike/www/mikelev.in/scripts/stream.py, replacing old PID 3614849).

  • Ignition Status: All required ignitions fired and were witnessed (exit -> ndq dropped posts2/postsc2 from the interactive shell; ./nixops.sh + kill -TERM 3614849 respawned Honeybot stream.py as PID 3638577; nixos-rebuild switch on Honeybot activated /nix/store/c17qykxpwxjmdprxnfnqsnaln11f2yva-nixos-system-honeybot-26.05pre913595.c6245e83d836).

5. CLOSING

A stateless Genie cannot remember yesterday on its own, and a stateful chat session that tries to remember everything inside a vendor’s KV-cache eventually drowns in its own false starts. By externalizing memory into plain-text articles that each leave a runnable SEED at their foot—and by making posts 10 -v open those articles newest-first so :bn walks backward through time—the repository itself becomes both the time machine and the save-game ledger. Meanwhile, out in the closet, Honeybot no longer wanders through a thousand archival posts or flashes a browser window over the terminal stream; it pops a voice-synchronized Figlet title card, reads the latest published chapter on a tight double-buffered loop, and waits for the Coachman’s next bell.

Book Analysis

Ai Editorial Take

What stands out most in this entry is a subtle inversion of how version control and blog archives usually work. In almost every software project, git history and blog posts are backward-looking fossils—records of what was done, useful only for blame or nostalgia. By embedding a runnable context.txt manifest at the bottom of every published post and wiring posts 10 -v to open those posts newest-first in Neovim, the archive becomes a forward-looking branching tree of execution states. Flipping through :bn and searching ?SEED is effectively git checkout for human-AI attention: you are not just reading what Tuesday’s article was about, you are inspecting the exact instrument panel that was loaded on Tuesday and deciding whether to ignite the engines from that runway today.

Every article leaves a runnable context seed at its foot—a save-game ramp to browse in Neovim with Cursor-First Chronology or steer with the Coachman's Veto.

Title Brainstorm

  • Title Option: The Coachman’s Veto, Cursor-First Chronology, and the Honeybot VOD Loop
    • Filename: coachmans-veto-cursor-chronology-honeybot-vod-loop.md
    • Rationale: Captures the three concrete pillars of the session: the human steering mechanism (Coachman’s Veto), the ergonomic UX principle discovered while fixing lsa.py (Cursor-First Chronology), and the live infrastructure deliverable on Honeybot.
  • Title Option: Save-Game Seeds, Neovim Buffer Chronology, and the Single-Article Broadcast Loop
    • Filename: save-game-seeds-neovim-buffers-honeybot-loop.md
    • Rationale: Highlights the video-game save-point mental model for NEXT CONTEXT blocks alongside the Neovim :bn navigation fix and the Honeybot streaming upgrade.
  • Title Option: Cursor-First Chronology: Time-Traveling Context Seeds and Voice-Synced Cards
    • Filename: cursor-first-chronology-voice-synced-cards-honeybot.md
    • Rationale: Leads with the newly banked # § CURSOR-FIRST CHRONOLOGY principle and pairs it with the double-buffered Piper TTS and Figlet card synchronization.
  • Title Option: The Clear Cups Protocol of AI Context: From Neovim Seeds to Live Broadcasts
    • Filename: clear-cups-ai-context-neovim-seeds-broadcasts.md
    • Rationale: Connects the Penn & Teller / James Randi verifiable receipt framing to the practical mechanics of seed navigation and live server deployment.

Content Potential And Polish

  • Core Strengths:
    • Articulates ‘Cursor-First Chronology’—a generalizable CLI/TUI design rule explaining why stdout listings and editor buffer lists require opposite chronological sort directions based on where the human eye and cursor land.
    • Demonstrates a genuine mid-session ‘Coachman’s Veto’ where inspecting the last 5 articles’ trailing seeds caused the operator to reject both AI-proposed paths and choose a third path (fixing Honeybot’s VOD loop) that only became obvious by looking at the history.
    • Provides complete before/after wire receipts across both local tooling (lsa.py, flake.nix) and remote NixOS infrastructure (./nixops.sh, SSH process replacement on Honeybot, and score.get_script() dropping from full-archive scans to 0.15s).
  • Suggestions For Polish:
    • When adapting this chapter for the book, briefly annotate the Bash ! negation quirk from Turn 3’s accidental NEXT CONTEXT paste in a sidebar callout, as it neatly illustrates why explicit command prefixes in context.txt double as a syntax boundary.
    • Consider adding a short diagram showing how prep_raw and play_raw overlap in time across paragraphs N and N+1 so readers unfamiliar with audio programming immediately grasp why double-buffering eliminates speech-rate estimation drift.

Next Step Prompts

  • Mount the apps/911_optics_workflow.py SEED block from Beat 4, inspect the current route structure alongside tools/llm_optics.py and tools/scraper_tools.py, and design the next high-leverage consulting deliverable step.
  • Run reseal on imports/ascii_displays.py to clear the honeybot_pipeline CRC drift warning and update the four deprecated NixOS 26.05 services.logind / services.displayManager.gdm option paths in remotes/honeybot/nixos/configuration.nix.
