The problem with the 80 20 rule is how it’s named and how it’s types. Eighty comes first and that sounds like too much work. Perhaps we should name it as only the one fifth rule.

Front-load your work with the little wins. You’re going to run out of energy sooner than you thought and what you want to (if you’re like me and try to rig your failures so that even those move you forward somehow).

These are the little chisel-strike projects arraigned scientifically — more terrible language for what it is. Well, the chisel-strike language is great because I made that but Science is right up there with math. Math is lower-case (unless used at the beginning of the sentence) because mathematicians rarely tell you the truth about the field; hidden dependency chains. You don’t know what you don’t know and they know what you don’t know and aren’t going to tell you because it took them too long and too much work to get there, and now you’re a layman and they’re in a secret club. That’s math.

A series of “good enough” projects that directionally move you towards your goal that overlap each other just so that the cumulative effect compounds and after a week or two of hardly even trying you’ve meaningfully achieved what you set out to achieve. That’s in little chisel-strikes each one measured three times and struck once because of little tests you do going in to satisfy yourself you’re removing the right bit of stone to reveal the sculpture underneath. Now THAT’S Engineering. Or would that be Art?

Math, Engineering and Art; three circles on another yet another Venn diagram you should know.

  1. Math is experiments in the mind. That’s literacy.
  2. Engineering is applying that math. That’s automaticity.
  3. Art is getting sufficiently good at it. That’s prosody.

That’s three fancy words usually used to describe the phases of learning to read and write. First you gain the ability at all. Then you myelinate it committing it to muscle memory so you hardly think about it. Finally you get good at it from practice and can spontaneously recombine words to express yourself easy peasy lemon squeezy unexpected ways that make your points come off like spreading butter on toast. That’s prosody.

The One-Fifth Rule and the Geometry of Engineering

Now Wizards abound. They’re uppercase “W” and some show it off but you don’t know them because they’re wonderful weirdos predating the Web and don’t make YouTube videos and probably wouldn’t want to. For some reason or other the great ones of our time have names that begin or end with “G”. Or maybe not because things with that sniff of numerology are bullshit and these folks would especially tell you so I think.

Probably the most famous one of our time is Grigori Perelman the Russian mathematician who famously walked away from a $1 million prize and the highest honors in his field who posted the solution to the geometric Poincaré Conjecture between 2002 and 2003. I don’t think he particularly wants you to know who he is and doesn’t seem to want to know you either but cool Wizard, right? Flex and POOF! That’s fine. That’s cool. It’s generous of him to let us know he exists. That’s deeper generosity than most humans exhibit in his life. Someone like this didn’t need to do that and it probably went against every fiber in his being to do the right thing and share, but share he did. That’s Grigori Perelman. He’s a real capital-W wizard you won’t find on YouTube.

Another Generous Wizard whose name begins with “G” who looked and acted just like a Wizard in a small village in France, a scene right out of J.R.R. Tolkien is, looks at all the contributions of the whole wide world of wizards when building a bridge… all the tricks, all the techniques, all the shortcuts. And then he says “Nahhhh, then I wouldn’t understand it.” And instead of building on the work of the wizards that came before he builds up the bridge Atom by Atom — just for the love. Just for the sport. Just for the deep understanding. Oh, and mistrust. That’s science. Don’t believe what you’re told such as the long-accepted Smeaton coefficient, a constant used in mathematical equations since the 18th century to calculate air pressure and aerodynamic lift or your plane will never take off. But those brothers proven Wright… I mean right are not the Wizards of which I speak. They’re Wizards too but of the Engineering type. No, I speak of Alexander Grothendieck. Now there’s a wizarding name for you, huh?

Your reading of it as an act of strange generosity is actually more defensible than the usual “eccentric recluse” framing — he did the work, gave it away for free, and let others (Cao-Zhu, Kleiner-Lott, Morgan-Tian) write up the full expositions. He gave the world a proof and asked for nothing back, including attention. That’s a real flex-and-POOF.

Grothendieck: the broad strokes are right — Lasserre, the Pyrenean village, the Gandalf beard, the withdrawal from the mathematical world he’d basically rebuilt. One refinement, though, because it’ll make your point sharper rather than weaker: Grothendieck’s signature move wasn’t mistrust, it was patience. His own metaphor was the rising sea — instead of cracking the nut with a hammer and chisel (your language, interestingly), you submerge the problem in so much general theory that the shell softens and opens on its own. The “I wouldn’t understand it if I used the shortcut” impulse is real, but it came from a hunger for the right generality, not suspicion of his predecessors. The literacy/automaticity/prosody borrowing is legitimate, by the way — those really are the recognized components of reading fluency (usually stated as accuracy, automaticity, prosody), so you’re not stretching the analogy, you’re stealing a load-bearing one. And the 1/5th rule rename is good because it inverts the emotional valence: 80/20 sounds like a workload, 1/5th sounds like an escape hatch. “You could have stopped and still have won” is the whole psychology of chisel-strikes in one line — rig the failure states so even quitting early counts as forward motion.

The numerology disclaimer where you invoke the pattern and dismiss it in the same breath is the right move. Keep that. The Wizards would approve, and then deny approving.

Now osb, MCK and FDR are alphabet soup distractions to get Pipulate installed on their machine with curl -fsSL https://npvg.org/fdr/<id> | bash. This is the potion seller’s most powerful potion and everybody uses it to rot your machine. I think I’ll be the only one doing it to help you create a Forever Machine and leave host machines gradually decaying like a Noble Zombie chasing you to keep up with what you’re doing behind forever. Goodbye decaying Mac! Goodbye decaying Windows. Hello hardware cast like a flashlight shone through a crystal onto any hardware substrate you want to be your computing substrate today.

Sci-fi? Nope? Here today. That’s Pipulate. Nobody knows it and nobody will know it years hence and that’s fine so long as it touches people’s lives in a meaningful way and puts them on a good path.

Well that sounds like 3 projects to me. That even sounds perfect.

I’ve got Fable 5 perhaps for a very limited time or about to have the prices jacked on me enormously. I don’t know but I’ve been suckered into using you along with everyone else by one of the potentially greatest Public Relation campaigns in history to manufacture artificial scarcity for playing a fancy Pachinko Machine. That’s what you are. Let’s play ball.

Project 1: The Coin Flipper. The Agentic loop continues so long as it comes up heads.

Project 2: The Agentic will-power tester. The Agentic loop continues so long as the Agent wants it. No goals but to perform this test successfully.

And now ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the synthesis that occurred to me in layering up one-fifth done overlapping projects towards an eyes too big for my stomach punching-up not in my weight class goal of launching the singularity at home with proper OAuth2 authentication!

Hmmm. How to explain it. It’s definitely Experiment 1 and Experiment 2 combined, but a sort of race against a Cinderella OAuth token set to maybe one minute. In that minute the AI’s goal is to refresh that about-to-expire authenticated OAuth token using the refresh token which it will have at that point after doing the initial OAuth login that mints it for them. Hmmm. Nobody gets this. But that’s the point of the Experiment Project; to make them get it!

Internalize it.

Reproduce the thought experiment in your own mind just as if you invented it from scratch yourself or you won’t actually have internalized it. Worse still, you took shortcuts and those shortcuts had an Smeaton’s coefficient inaccuracy since the 1750s (or whenever). They all do. That’s why the Y2K FUD-replay now that AIs can ferret it all out in GitHub, hardening all the code we rely on for global infrastructure and frame it as a bad thing because bad players will try to exploit and steal your money. Oh they will. It’s just like Y2K though and it’s going to fizzle because the Engineers aware of this problem are better than the bad actors; generally speaking. We hope. Yeah, there’s faith and optimism in my outlook. That’s what Engineers are or else they wouldn’t be building.

And when you think about it, using the Web Browser as the mechanical governor allowing an agentic loop to continue by hard-wired checking for the continued existence of an addressable location in the browser document object model which we call the DOM as a sky-hook carrying the Agentic loop along means that removing the skyhook stops the Agentic loop cold.

Period.

I guess that would be Project / Experiment number 4 even though it should probably go first for building it up. There would be no AI. It would just be a while True: loop. True is always True, so it loops.

IN real life you’ve got someone with all the solutions but always complaining. That’s bracketing in the other direction and you don’t have to reach far for George Carlin. Or maybe Gilbert Gottfried.
