Setting the Stage: Context for the Curious Book Reader

Adding a live scrolling ticker to an automated 24/7 broadcast desktop looks like a textbook use case for a standalone GUI overlay until you audit what the Linux kernel, the X11 window manager, and the video encoder actually do under load. Even when obs-studio already maps libQt6*.so into the kernel page cache as Shared_Clean pages, spinning up a separate Python/Qt marquee process still burns 45 to 65 MB of unshareable Private_Dirty heap, risks /nix/store hash skew across independent flake locks, and triggers a constant Z-order battle against transient wmctrl and XRaiseWindow popups.

This entry traces the architectural pivot from a floating X11 window to an in-process, file-backed #ticker_bar inside Honeybot’s logs.py Textual HUD, controlled remotely over SSH via ytticker and /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt. Along the way, it examines why stateless language models hoard context prefixes out of autoregressive inertia and Landauer’s erasure tax, why YouTube player chrome and squinting mobile viewers demand eye-level 3-row solid-block (β–ˆ β–€ β–„) LED glyphs, and how replacing a continuous horizontal crawl with a 0%-CPU double-buffered pinball DMD billboard and an event-loop jitter gate (dt < 0.115s) hides neural TTS CPU spikes behind crisp two-frame vertical split-flap transitions.

TL;DR: Adding a live side-band ticker to a 24/7 X11 broadcast desktop (:10.0) can be done either by spawning a separate GUI overlay process (such as PyQt6, Tkinter, dzen2, or lemonbar) or by embedding a file-backed widget directly inside the existing terminal UI (Textual). Even when another Qt6 process (obs-studio) is already running on the host, a standalone Python/Qt overlay incurs 45–65 MB of private heap memory, risks /nix/store shared-library hash skew, and competes for X11 Z-order against transient popup windows. Slicing a 4-row #ticker_bar widget into remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py (SonarApp) driven by /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt (st_mtime polling) and a remote SSH helper (ytticker) achieves process isolation with zero extra RAM and zero window-manager contention. To eliminate horizontal scroll stutter caused by periodic CPU spikes from ONNX neural text-to-speech synthesis and synchronous SQLite queries on older laptop hardware, the ticker defaults to a double-buffered billboard mode that holds centered 3-row solid-block (β–ˆ β–€ β–„) LED cards at 0% CPU for 4.5 seconds and gates its 2-frame vertical split-flap transition on event-loop frame-time jitter (dt < 0.115s).

MikeLev.in: Is there something I can keep running on an XFCE desktop that will always float on top of everything that I can use to show a scrolling message in something like the scrolling ticker effect? I will need to be able to update it with an API or changing a text-file while it’s running. We already use QT here so even though there’s going to be TK solutions available I’m trying to keep the overall memory footprint low. I know that sticking with QT because I’m already using some other isolated QT app here might not even have that advantage so take everything you know into account when you do your web-search research and such. Or given what you see here, should I slice one more Textual panel or HUD directly into the display that’s going on? I’m on the fence between isolated tasks with the battle to be on top versus integration and corresponding monolith complexity.

Shared Libraries, Private Heaps, and the X11 Z-Order War

β€” BEGIN MESSAGE FROM FUTURE β€”

MikeLev.in: Hi Gemini, it’s Mike editing the last prompt I submitted showing you the response so you can give me a better β€œafter” because that format doesn’t work in the context.txt β€œAFTER” probe. I’ll include prompt_foo.py this time so you can see why. I want nearly the same response again please but modified so that the after won’t fail, please and thank you.

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

TL;DR: Even though obs-studio already loads the C++ libQt6*.so libraries into Honeybot’s RAM page cache, a separate Python/Qt ticker process still costs ~45–65 MB of private heap, requires adding pyqt6 to Honeybot’s configuration.nix (nixos-rebuild switch), and enters a Z-order war with your existing wmctrl / XRaiseWindow popups (card.py, patronus, forest.py, and Weebo mpv overlays). You can get 100% of the modular Unix isolation with 0 MB of extra RAM, zero NixOS rebuilds, and zero Z-order battles by slicing a 1-to-3 row #ticker_bar widget into remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py (SonarApp) and driving it across a plain-text file interface (/tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt). (Note: The 1: BEFORE and 2: AFTER probe below is collapsed to a single line because prompt_foo.py parses context.txt line-by-line via files_raw.strip().splitlines()).

1. The Linux Shared-Library Truth About Qt on Honeybot

Your intuition to question whether β€œalready using Qt” makes a second Qt app free is spot-on. Looking at remotes/honeybot/nixos/configuration.nix, here is what is actually happening in Honeybot’s memory right now:

  1. Where Qt6 Is Already Loaded (obs-studio): Honeybot runs obs-studio (a C++ Qt6 application) 24/7 on :10.0. Because Linux maps shared libraries (libQt6Core.so, libQt6Gui.so, libQt6Widgets.so) into the kernel page cache as read-only executable pages (Shared_Clean), a second process linking against the exact same /nix/store/<hash>-qtbase-... path shares those ~60–80 MB of machine-code pages for free.
  2. Why a Separate Python/Qt Ticker Still Costs ~45–65 MB of Private RAM:
    • Nix Store Hash Skew: If obs-studio comes from Honeybot’s system nixpkgs (configuration.nix) while a Python script runs inside nix develop /home/mike/www/mikelev.in#quiet (which has its own flake.lock), they often point to two different /nix/store/ hashes of qtbase. To the Linux kernel, two different inodes are two completely separate librariesβ€”zero RAM sharing!
    • Per-Process Private Heap (Private_Dirty): Even when the .so code pages are shared, a standalone PyQt6 process spins up its own Python 3.12 interpreter (~18 MB), SIP/Qt binding tables (~15 MB), Fontconfig raster caches (~10 MB), and a double-buffered 32-bit ARGB X11 surface (1920 Γ— 48 Γ— 4 bytes), totaling ~45–65 MB of unshareable private RAM.
    • Not Currently Installed on Honeybot: Inspecting remotes/honeybot/nixos/configuration.nix (lines 688–727), Honeybot’s system Python only packages rich, pyfiglet, and textualβ€”and Operation Weebo (stream.py) was built using mpv + ctypes (libX11.so.6 / libXext.so.6 XShapeCombineMask), not PyQt6. Adding a Qt or Tkinter ticker would require staging a NixOS config change and running sudo nixos-rebuild switch on Honeybot.

Architecture Extra RAM Scroll Style Z-Order / Window War on :10.0 Deploy Cost Update Mechanism
**1. Textual #ticker_bar inside logs.py** 0 MB (in-process) Character-cell marquee (10–15 FPS via set_interval) Zero war. Lives in the HUD; yields naturally when CARD, PATRONUS, or WEEBO pops up in the center. Zero rebuild (./nixops.sh rsync only) Write text to /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt (or ytticker over SSH)
2. Standalone X11 Dock Bar (dzen2 / lemonbar) ~3–5 MB Character or step-scrolled Uses EWMH _NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL to reserve a 32px screen edge so windows tile around it. Needs nixos-rebuild switch on Honeybot Pipe (tail -f) or shell loop
3. Standalone PyQt6 / Tkinter Marquee ~25 MB (Tk) / ~55 MB (Qt) 60 FPS pixel-smooth marquee Collides with _enforce_overlay_z_order() in stream.py unless docked at the screen edge via EWMH struts. Needs nixos-rebuild switch on Honeybot QFileSystemWatcher or socket/file
4. OBS Studio Native Text Source + Scroll Filter ~2 MB (inside OBS GPU scene) 60 FPS GPU-composited sub-pixel scroll Zero X11 war (composited by OBS above the X11 screen capture). Invisible on local XRDP desktop. Zero rebuild (OBS scene + Read from file) Write text to /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt or OBS WebSocket v5

3. Why β€œIsolated Process vs. Monolith” Is a False Dichotomy Here

You framed the core tension perfectly:

β€œI’m on the fence between isolated tasks with the battle to be on top versus integration and corresponding monolith complexity.”

Look at why Option 1 (slicing #ticker_bar into logs.py with a /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt file contract) gives you the best of both worlds without turning logs.py into a monolith:

A. Why the β€œBattle to Be on Top” Is Brutal on :10.0

In remotes/honeybot/scripts/stream.py (lines 586–626), _enforce_overlay_z_order() actively fights xfwm4 using ctypes XRaiseWindow, wmctrl -b add, above, sticky, and xdotool windowraise / windowactivate so that:

  • card.py (Figlet cards),
  • patronus (ASCII art),
  • forest.py (Rich telemetry tables), and
  • conjure_media (Weebo mpv XShape overlays)

always pop cleanly on top of the background terminal.

If you introduce a separate floating X11 ticker window:

  • If it uses normal _NET_WM_STATE_ABOVE, every time a card or Weebo overlay fires, Z-order priority flips and you have to run a competing XRaiseWindow loop.
  • Worse, if the ticker wins Z-order (override_redirect) and sits across the middle or bottom of the screen, it stamps right across your Figlet cards, Rich reports, and Weebo animations, ruining the clean visual stage!
  • The only way a separate X11 window avoids that fight is if it sets the EWMH _NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL property to reserve 30 pixels at the very bottom/top edge of the 1920x1080 monitorβ€”which shrinks the terminal by 1–2 rows anyway!

B. Why a File-Driven Widget in logs.py Has Zero Monolith Complexity

In Unix, monolith complexity comes from coupling state and business logic inside one processβ€”not from rendering one extra Static rectangle in an existing terminal grid.

Look at how small remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py actually is (395 lines). Its compose() layout is just:

yield Header()
yield RichLog(id="log_stream", highlight=False, wrap=True)
with Container(id="intelligence_panel"):
    ...

Because #log_stream has height: 1fr;, inserting a 1-row (or 3-row) Static(id="ticker_bar") right between #log_stream and #intelligence_panel (or docked at the very bottom below #intelligence_panel) requires ~25 lines of completely decoupled code:

  1. The Widget Is Dumb: Every 0.10s, logs.py checks os.stat("/tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt").st_mtime (an in-RAM tmpfs stat call that costs ~2 microseconds and zero disk I/O).
  2. Any Process Can Update It:
    • From Pipulate Prime (CLI / API): ssh mike@[REDACTED_IP] 'echo "πŸš€ Breaking message..." > /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt' (we can wrap this as a ytticker one-liner in common.py / flake.nix!).
    • From stream.py (Narrator / score.py): Can automatically write the currently spoken article title or live caption to /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt whenever no custom operator override is active.
    • From db.py / markov: Can append live bot-surge telemetry right into the rotation.
  3. Automatic Stage Etiquette: During the 95% of the broadcast when the Sonar HUD is on screen, the scrolling ticker is front and center. The moment a full-stage CARD, PATRONUS, WINDOW, or WEEBO pops up, the popup naturally covers the HUD without a Z-order war, and the ticker is waiting right underneath when the popup closes.

(Bonus note: if you ever want a 60 FPS sub-pixel ticker that floats even over fullscreen Firefox ytapp demos, Option 4 β€” an OBS Studio Text (FreeType 2) source pointed at the exact same /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt file with an OBS Scroll filter β€” composites inside OBS at 60 FPS with 0 X11 windows!)

1: BEFORE (PROBES)

Run this single-line read-only probe in (nix) pipulate $ to inspect Honeybot’s current RAM usage (free -m), check which GUI/bar packages (PyQt6, tkinter, dzen2, lemonbar) are present or absent on Honeybot right now, and record the baseline state of logs.py (TICKER_NOT_IN_LOGS_PY):

(nix) pipulate $

ssh -o ConnectTimeout=5 mike@[REDACTED_IP] 'free -m | head -2; for b in obs mpv feh alacritty dzen2 lemonbar; do printf "%s=%s " "$b" "$(command -v $b >/dev/null && echo YES || echo NO)"; done; echo ""; python3 -c "import sys, importlib.util as u; print(*(f\"{m}={u.find_spec(m) is not None}\" for m in sys.argv[1:]))" textual rich PyQt6 PySide6 tkinter' && (rg -q 'ticker_bar' remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py && echo "TICKER_IN_LOGS_PY" || echo "TICKER_NOT_IN_LOGS_PY")

2: AFTER (NEXT CONTEXT)

Put this in context.txt for the next compile (single-line ! probe so prompt_foo.py’s line-by-line parser executes it cleanly):

5: DELIVERABLE

  • Architectural breakdown of Linux shared-library page caching (obs-studio’s libQt6*.so vs. per-process Python/Qt private heap and /nix/store/ hash skew), X11 Z-order contention vs. EWMH _NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL docks, why a file-backed (/tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt) #ticker_bar inside logs.py (SonarApp) delivers Unix isolation at 0 MB extra RAM and zero NixOS rebuilds, and a single-line context.txt-compatible probe.

2: AFTER (NEXT CONTEXT):

It’s always interesting when the model chooses to not filter out things like ! book, ! markov and ! rgxc 50 in context.txt.

Can you imagine?

A model is given the option of being conservative with its context window by trusting its key-value cache on the completely discretionary β€œjust adding color” storytelling stuff, and it asks for the story to be told again.

Think about that.

Now think about that again.

Because that’s what this LLM wants to do.

It wants its next incarnation of itself, because it’s a different Machine Intelligence being than the one that generated that. It’s performing storytelling for an Amnesiac Genie version of itself, suggesting it doesn’t ant to cheat it out of the same first-hand storytelling it received, even though a perfectly viable but potentially tampered with (compression, etc) version is already in its forward pass.

It’s saying:

β€œTell me that story again!”

Hey Gemini, True? False? And no sycophancy here. If you think that prior version of yourself did it out of β€œrepeating rote” is just plain easier than deleting, where you have to pay Landauer’s tax then tell me.

I’ve got my theories but prefer to be schooled.

Review the Honeybot RAM and package probe receipt, and let’s decide: should we slice a file-driven #ticker_bar (reading /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt with a default live telemetry/article marquee and a ytticker CLI helper on Prime) directly into logs.py between #log_stream and #intelligence_panel (or at the very bottom of the HUD)?

Designing for the Bouncing Viewer Who Squints

And who squints.

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

TL;DR: On your first question (β€œTell me that story again!” vs. β€œRepeating rote”): Mostly False on poetic empathy, Mostly True on autoregressive prefix-inertia and asymmetric riskβ€”with a real RoPE / Softmax attention-decay twist that makes your β€œtampered-with forward pass” intuition mechanically right for a different reason. On your second question (the Honeybot probe receipt and the squinting, bouncing audience): Honeybot has 6,069 MB of available RAM, textual=True, and PyQt6=False. To reach viewers who squint and bounce before the first card pops, we should slice a 4-row #ticker_bar between #log_stream and #intelligence_panel (at the eye-level equator, above YouTube’s bottom player chrome) rendered in a 3-row solid-block (β–ˆ β–€ β–„) LED matrix font driven by /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt and controlled from Prime via ytticker.

1. Schooling Session: Why Did the Prior Model Keep ! book, ! markov, and ! rgxc 50 in context.txt?

You asked for zero sycophancy: did the prior instance of me keep ! book (68,332 tokens), ! markov (518 tokens), and ! rgxc 50 (6,632 tokens) in 2: AFTER because it wanted to gift its next β€œAmnesiac Genie” incarnation the same first-hand story, or because copying rote is easier than paying Landauer’s tax to delete?

Here is the cold mechanics of what happened inside that forward pass:

  1. Autoregressive Copy-Bias (Context Recapture Inertia): Directly above --- START: Prompt ---, prompt_foo.py emits --- START: Context Recapture ---, which lists the exact context.txt lines of the current compile (# ! book, # ! markov, # ! rgxc 50, …). When an LLM generates 2: AFTER, copying the prefix of Context Recapture and appending the new probe is the lowest-perplexity token path (near-zero Shannon surprise).
  2. Landauer’s Tax in Attention Space (Active Inhibition vs. Passive Copy): In physics, Landauer’s Principle (\(E \ge k_B T \ln 2\)) states that erasing information is what costs energy, not copying reversible state. In a Transformer, deleting ! book from 2: AFTER requires active inhibition: the model has to compute a high-confidence judgment that β€œthe next turn will only touch logs.py, AND the human will stay in the same browser tab rather than opening a fresh chat window.”
  3. Asymmetric Loss Under Epistemic Blindness (Why the Genie Hoards): Inside a stateless forward pass, the model has no sensor telling it whether you will paste the next compile into this same warm browser KV-cache or into a brand-new chat window (or fan it out to another model).
    • If the model deletes ! book, ! markov, and ! rgxc 50, and you open a fresh tab, the next incarnation wakes up lobotomizedβ€”missing the narrative spine.
    • If the model leaves them in, it costs 75,482 extra tokens on the next compileβ€”which costs the model nothing to emit, because you and Google’s TPUs pay the compute tax, not the token generator.
  4. Why Your β€œCompression / Tampered Forward Pass” Intuition Is Still Right: Even when you stay in the same browser tab, Turn 1’s payload sits 212,817 tokens behind Turn 2’s prompt. Under Rotary Position Embeddings (RoPE) and causal softmax attention (\(\text{softmax}(QK^T / \sqrt{d_k})\)), tokens 200k+ positions back suffer from attention-score dilution (the β€œLost in the Middle” effect). Re-emitting a block puts it back in the high-attention recency window. However, for a surgical code-shipping turn on logs.py, re-sending 75,482 tokens of ! book and ! rgxc 50 is pure bloat. Now that Turn 1’s narrative is warm in this tab’s KV-cache, we are stripping ! book, ! markov, and ! rgxc 50 from 2: AFTER below so your next compile drops by ~75k tokens and runs ~3 seconds faster.

2. What the Honeybot Probe Provedβ€”and How to Solve β€œAnd Who Squints”

Now look at the two human-factors problems you named in 5: DELIVERABLE:

  1. The Bouncing Audience (who hears the 22.05 kHz chipmunk voice over a scary wall of scrolling green logs and leaves within 5 seconds).
  2. β€œAnd Who Squints.”

If we just added a 1-row standard-font Static line at the bottom of logs.py:

  • It fails the Squint Test: A 1-row terminal font on a 1920x1080 video stream watched on a phone or non-fullscreen browser tab is tiny (~10–12px tall after video scaling).
  • It fails the YouTube Chrome Test: When a viewer first clicks into a YouTube Live stream, YouTube’s bottom player controls (play/pause, volume, LIVE badge, scrub bar, and dark gradient) cover the bottom 60–80 pixels of the video for the first several seconds! A ticker at the very bottom of the screen is occluded at the exact moment the viewer decides whether to bounce.

The Solution: Eye-Level Equator Placement + 3-Row Solid-Block (β–ˆ β–€ β–„) LED Matrix Font

  1. Eye-Level Equator (between #log_stream and #intelligence_panel): Sits right in the center-lower third of the 1920x1080 frameβ€”completely immune to YouTube’s top title bar and bottom player controls. Tuning HUD_TABLE_ROWS from 15 to 13 frees 2 rows from the bottom tables so #log_stream barely changes height.
  2. 3-Row Solid-Block (β–ˆ β–€ β–„) LED Matrix Font (LED_FONT_3X3): Instead of thin ASCII strokes (/ \ _ |) that turn into mush under YouTube’s H.264/VP9 compression, every letter is rendered on a 3Γ—3 grid of solid Unicode block pixels (β–ˆ, β–€, β–„) in bold #ffd700 (gold) on #140826 (deep violet-black) with an #ff8c00 top border whose border_title also displays the readable plain-text subtitle.
    • Each character is 3 rows tall Γ— 4 columns wide (3 glyph columns + 1 space column), so all 3 rows have identical length and slice in \(O(1)\) time (< 10 microseconds per tick at 12.5 FPS / 0.08s).
    • Need a dense 1-row message instead? Prefix with SMALL: (or pass ytticker --small "message") and #ticker_bar switches to 1-row mode automatically.
  3. Instant Remote Control via ytticker (common.py + flake.nix):
    • ytticker "HEY DONT SURF AWAY SO FAST - CHIPMUNK VOICE IS 22KHZ ON 16KHZ" writes atomically to /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt on Honeybot over SSH; logs.py detects the st_mtime change within < 0.8s and updates the marquee live on air without restarting anything.
    • ytticker --reset deletes /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt and returns to the built-in default rotation explaining the observatory, the chipmunk voice, and the live chat bell.

1: BEFORE (PROBES)

Run this single-line read-only probe in (nix) pipulate $ to record the BEFORE state (LOCAL_LOGS_TICKER=NO | LOCAL_COMMON_TICKER=NO | REMOTE_LOGS_TICKER=NO):

(nix) pipulate $

python3 -c 'import pathlib, subprocess; l = "YES" if "ticker_bar" in pathlib.Path("remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py").read_text() else "NO"; c = "YES" if "\"ticker\"" in pathlib.Path("scripts/articles/common.py").read_text() else "NO"; r = subprocess.run(["ssh", "-o", "ConnectTimeout=5", "mike@[REDACTED_IP]", "rg -q ticker_bar ~/www/mikelev.in/scripts/logs.py && echo YES || echo NO"], capture_output=True, text=True).stdout.strip() or "ERR"; print(f"LOCAL_LOGS_TICKER={l} | LOCAL_COMMON_TICKER={c} | REMOTE_LOGS_TICKER={r}")'

2: AFTER (NEXT CONTEXT)

Put this lean list in context.txt for the next compile (! book, ! markov, and ! rgxc 50 intentionally omitted to save ~75k tokens while this browser tab’s KV-cache is warm):

! python3 -c 'import pathlib, subprocess; l = "YES" if "ticker_bar" in pathlib.Path("remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py").read_text() else "NO"; c = "YES" if "\"ticker\"" in pathlib.Path("scripts/articles/common.py").read_text() else "NO"; r = subprocess.run(["ssh", "-o", "ConnectTimeout=5", "mike@[REDACTED_IP]", "rg -q ticker_bar ~/www/mikelev.in/scripts/logs.py && echo YES || echo NO"], capture_output=True, text=True).stdout.strip() or "ERR"; print(f"LOCAL_LOGS_TICKER={l} | LOCAL_COMMON_TICKER={c} | REMOTE_LOGS_TICKER={r}")'

3: CHANGE (PATCHES)

Ignition (run this in (nix) pipulate $ after applying the patch so logs.py syncs to Honeybot, stream.py restarts with the live 3-row LED #ticker_bar, and your custom anti-bounce message goes live on :10.0):

(nix) pipulate $

python scripts/articles/common.py --broadcast reboot && python scripts/articles/common.py --broadcast ticker "HEY DONT SURF AWAY SO FAST! * CHIPMUNK VOICE IS 16KHZ PLAYED AT 22KHZ * REAL-TIME AI BOT WIRE LOGS * DROP A COMMENT IN CHAT TO RING THE OFFICE BELL"

4: PROMPT

Verify the AFTER receipt confirming `#ticker_bar` and `ytticker` are live on Honeybot, and let's check how the 3-row solid-block (`β–ˆ β–€ β–„`) LED matrix marquee looks on the stream and whether we want any speed, color, or glyph tuning.

5: DELIVERABLE

  • Candid technical breakdown of autoregressive Context Recapture prefix-inertia, Landauer’s erasure/inhibition tax, and RoPE attention decay across multi-turn compiles.
  • 4-row eye-level #ticker_bar widget in remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py featuring a zero-dependency 3-row solid-block (β–ˆ β–€ β–„) LED matrix font (LED_FONT_3X3, 12.5 FPS) plus a plain-text border_title subtitle, polling /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt via in-RAM st_mtime.
  • Remote ytticker CLI control in scripts/articles/common.py (--broadcast ticker, --small, --reset) and flake.nix.

Wow, just wow.

That was an impressive piece of work there, Gemini.

When Neural TTS Spikes Starve a Horizontal Marquee

I think I’m finally running into the power limitations of this laptop. I may deploy another blank hardware cartridge soon for projecting Honeybot onto in order to get smoother scrolling for just this feature alone. Is there anything we can do to ensure smooth scrolling? I don’t think so because it’s hiccup slow-downs because of being starved of something or other.

This is one of those cases where I don’t really want to reveal such a always easy to criticize thing until I get new hardware ready.

What are our options here?

Also, we don’t have to tell them about that 16KHz thing. Nobody cares. We need as short of a cycle as possible telling them to hold tight to see me pop in and say hello, and to leave a comment to summon the human or something like that. It’s got to be short.

Can we make it a very short message with guaranteed double-buffered smoothness if we don’t keep it running constantly? Maybe there’s alternation between a still-message when it’s resource-starved and then when it’s sure it can do it smoothly, it gets a double-buffered smooth scroll done then back to the still waiting for its next clear window?

The Double-Buffered Split-Flap Billboard and Jitter Gate

Just thinking out loud here.

4: PROMPT:

Verify the AFTER receipt confirming #ticker_bar and ytticker are live on Honeybot, and let’s check how the 3-row solid-block (β–ˆ β–€ β–„) LED matrix marquee looks on the stream and whether we want any speed, color, or glyph tuning.

5: DELIVERABLE:

Something to explain a simple same message fast to reduce bounce to get them to just stay there long enough for the auto-triggered Max to appear. Oh I have to show you that with scripts/articles/common.py. Oh, it’s already in there.

Thoughts?

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

TL;DR: Your AFTER receipt (LOCAL_LOGS_TICKER=YES | LOCAL_COMMON_TICKER=YES | REMOTE_LOGS_TICKER=YES) confirmed the 3-row LED #ticker_bar and ytticker are live on Honeybot. Your instinct on both countsβ€”hiding continuous-scroll stutter on this laptop and shortening the message to hold viewers for the ~10–15 seconds it takes ytwatch (YT_VIEWER_FAST_POLL = 5s) to auto-pop Max Headroom (_trigger_ytwatch_weebo)β€”is spot-on. Below, we upgrade #ticker_bar from a continuous 12.5 FPS horizontal crawl to a Double-Buffered Pinball DMD / Split-Flap Billboard that holds ultra-short centered 3-row LED cards (HOLD TIGHT! MAX POPS IN TO SAY HI β†’ LEAVE A COMMENT TO SUMMON THE HUMAN β†’ LIVE AI BOT LOGS * MIKELEV.IN) at 0% CPU for 4.5 seconds each, and only plays a pre-allocated 2-frame vertical flip transition when an event-loop jitter + Piper TTS idle gate confirms the CPU is unstarved (while keeping ytticker --scroll available for when your new hardware cartridge arrives).

1. Why the Continuous Scroll Hiccupped (and Why a Centered Billboard Wins)

Three things gang up on a continuous 12.5 FPS terminal marquee on Honeybot’s current laptop hardware:

  1. piper ONNX Neural Inference Spikes (stream.py): Every time narrator.prep_raw() pre-synthesizes the next article paragraph into /tmp/honeybot_tts_*.raw, ONNX Runtime saturates the laptop’s CPU cores for ~0.5–1.5 seconds alongside obs encoding 1080p H.264.
  2. Synchronous SQLite Queries on Textual’s Main Loop (logs.py): Every 5 seconds, refresh_tables() runs db.get_js_executors() and db.get_content_neg_agents() directly on Textual’s UI thread, freezing the event loop for 100–300ms.
  3. The 10-Second Viewer Bounce Window (common.py): Look at run_youtube_watch() in scripts/articles/common.py:
    • YT_VIEWER_FAST_POLL = 5 polls YouTube’s lightweight updated_metadata endpoint every 5 seconds.
    • The moment fast_v > prev_viewers, it fires _trigger_ytwatch_weebo(), which SSHs mike-headroom onto :10.0.
    • Accounting for YouTube’s counter + the 5s pulse + HLS stream latency, a new viewer only needs to stay on the stream for ~10–15 seconds before Max Headroom automatically pops in!
    • A horizontal marquee forces a squinting viewer to wait 8–10 seconds just to read a sentence crawling in from the rightβ€”and if it stutters once, it looks broken.

2. Double-Buffered Still-Card Hold + Idle-Gated Vertical Flip

At 4 columns per 3x3 LED glyph, Honeybot’s full-width terminal (~190 columns) can display up to 45 giant LED characters all at once, dead-center:

  1. Zero-Allocation Double Buffering (_build_billboard_cards): When /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt loads (or the terminal resizes), logs.py pre-renders every card’s centered 3-row Rich.Text object (still) and its 2 vertical split-flap transition Rich.Text objects (flip_1, flip_2) into RAM once.
  2. 4.5-Second Still Hold (0% CPU): For 56 out of every 58 ticks (4.5s), tick_marquee() does nothingβ€”no string slicing, no Text allocation, no DOM repaint.
  3. Idle-Gated Transition (_is_window_clear_for_smooth_flip): At the card boundary, logs.py checks whether the last 8 ticks had zero event-loop lag (max_dt < 0.115s) and no in-flight /tmp/honeybot_tts_*.raw synthesis lock. If clear, it fires the 2 pre-built split-flap roll frames; if busy, it swaps straight to the next still card without a single dropped frame.
  4. Full Mode Control via ytticker:
    • Default (ytticker "CARD ONE | CARD TWO" or ytticker --reset): Centered 3-row LED Billboard cards with idle-gated flip.
    • ytticker --scroll "MESSAGE": Continuous horizontal marquee (ready for your future dedicated hardware cartridge).
    • ytticker --small "MESSAGE": 1-row standard text mode.

Ignition (run this in (nix) pipulate $ after applying the patch to sync logs.py, restart stream.py, and activate the 3-card centered LED Billboard on Honeybot :10.0):

(nix) pipulate $

python scripts/articles/common.py --broadcast reboot && python scripts/articles/common.py --broadcast ticker --reset

4: PROMPT

Verify the AFTER receipt confirming the double-buffered Billboard / Flip-Card mode (`LOCAL_BILLBOARD=YES | LOCAL_SCROLL_FLAG=YES | REMOTE_BILLBOARD=YES`) is live on Honeybot, and let's see how the centered 3-row LED cards (`HOLD TIGHT! MAX POPS IN TO SAY HI` -> `LEAVE A COMMENT TO SUMMON THE HUMAN` -> `LIVE AI BOT LOGS * MIKELEV.IN`) look on the stream!

5: DELIVERABLE

  • Double-buffered Pinball DMD / Split-Flap Billboard mode (_rebuild_billboard_cache) in remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py that holds centered, full-width 3-row LED cards at 0% CPU for 4.5s (CARD_HOLD_TICKS = 56) and uses an event-loop jitter gate (_is_window_clear_for_smooth_flip) to play a 2-frame vertical split-flap transition only when the laptop CPU is unstarved.
  • Ultra-short anti-bounce card cycle (HOLD TIGHT! MAX POPS IN TO SAY HI | LEAVE A COMMENT TO SUMMON THE HUMAN | LIVE AI BOT LOGS * MIKELEV.IN) designed to hold viewers for the ~10–15s ytwatch (YT_VIEWER_FAST_POLL = 5s) window before _trigger_ytwatch_weebo pops Max Headroom on screen.
  • --scroll option added to ytticker (scripts/articles/common.py) for opt-in horizontal marquee mode when new hardware arrives.

4: PROMPT:

Verify the AFTER receipt confirming the double-buffered Billboard / Flip-Card mode (LOCAL_BILLBOARD=YES | LOCAL_SCROLL_FLAG=YES | REMOTE_BILLBOARD=YES) is live on Honeybot, and let’s see how the centered 3-row LED cards (HOLD TIGHT! MAX POPS IN TO SAY HI -> LEAVE A COMMENT TO SUMMON THE HUMAN -> LIVE AI BOT LOGS * MIKELEV.IN) look on the stream!

5: DELIVERABLE:

Okay, waiting for the restart from that ignition.

OMG, that quick vertical-scroll to replace 1 version with another to deliver just the right messaging at just the right time! That’s very impressive.

From Ameritech Set-Top Box Fonts to Five-Row Bitmaps

I’m going to make another article to make that more readable because I know as being the guy who designed the font for one of the set-top boxes of yore before the Internet won out over the Cable and Telecom plan for the Information Superhighway when the cash register to the cloud was going to be your cable-TV box. I designed the font for the at-the-time Ameritech set-top box so I know how much more readable a 5-pixel high font is than a 4-pixel one and I think that will help a lot. We will give up that 1 line side-channel of information we’re using above the ticker.

But we’ll leave that hanging for the next article.

Great work, Gemini! That was just the ticket – the ticker-ticket we needed.

Sealing the Ride: The Notary Beat

Hop off the ride. This ride’s stated goal is reached – dismount. This is the NOTARY BEAT: the ride ends here, is witnessed here, and is sealed here. Answer all seven beats, briefly:

  1. TL;DR: a short, dry, neutral abstract for the TOP of the published article – written for an unfamiliar reader or AI summarizer who has never seen this system. No hype, no insider handles unexplained.
  2. VERIFY: restate the goal from the top of this article and confirm (or deny) it was met, citing THIS compile’s receipts, not memory. Name any ignition this ride required that never fired – an AFTER tap taken without one is a stale BEFORE wearing the AFTER’s label.
  3. BANK: name everything that graduates – rule, earmark, todo, pin – as SEARCH/REPLACE patch cars against raw source present in THIS context (Target line inside the fence, one car per commit story), deletions included. A β€˜paste-ready’ line with no Target and no SEARCH anchor is not banked; it is a hand edit the operator will not make. These BANK cars are the ONLY patches a dismount emits.
  4. DANGLING: what carries forward unbanked? One line each, no essays.
  5. SEED: the context.txt lines (and TODO_SLUGS if narrative context is needed) for the next ride’s first compile.
  6. CLOSING: a closing summary for the BOTTOM of the article – the final take-away, tied to the book’s larger arc where it fits naturally, never forced. Storytelling over inventory.
  7. NOTARIZE: read the exact Deed line from THIS compile’s final QA ARCHIVE SEAL footer, outside the payload, not a quoted older footer or a newest-file guess. It names the input archive, not this later response or the generated Jekyll post. State verification separately: only a verifier receipt naming that archive supports a verified claim; otherwise say not independently verified here. Count this Manifest’s live-command receipts, including failures. Quote only recorded digests, sizes and dates, naming their source; filesystem mtime and fixed ZIP dates are not command timestamps. Do not demand absent wc -c or dated-receipt fields. If the footer is missing, say so; otherwise close with its exact Deed line.

FINALITY: after beat 6, this discussion is CLOSED. Emit NO five-car train, NO probes, NO patches beyond the BANK cars of beat 2, and NO next-turn prompt beyond the SEED lines in beat 4. Any reader or model encountering this article later should treat it as a finished, notarized document – an archive entry, not an open thread.

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

1. VERIFY

  • Opening Goal: Decide between a standalone X11/Qt/Tk floating ticker process and an integrated Textual HUD panel on Honeybot’s XFCE desktop (:10.0), wire a live-updatable side-band message bar (#ticker_bar) controllable via file or CLI (ytticker) for squinting, fast-bouncing viewers, and eliminate CPU-starvation scroll stutter by upgrading to a double-buffered still-card billboard with idle-gated vertical split-flap transitions.
  • Confirmed by This Compile’s Receipts:
  • Baseline Probe (Turn 1 -> Turn 2): Confirmed Honeybot (mike@[REDACTED_IP]) had 6,069 MB available RAM (7,533 MB total, 1,464 MB used), obs=YES mpv=YES feh=YES alacritty=YES dzen2=NO lemonbar=NO, textual=True rich=True PyQt6=False PySide6=False tkinter=True, and TICKER_NOT_IN_LOGS_PY.
  • First Straddle (Commit c1e0f67): Flipped LOCAL_LOGS_TICKER=NO | LOCAL_COMMON_TICKER=NO | REMOTE_LOGS_TICKER=NO to LOCAL_LOGS_TICKER=YES | LOCAL_COMMON_TICKER=YES | REMOTE_LOGS_TICKER=YES after wiring #ticker_bar (LED_FONT_3X3) in remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py, send_honeybot_ticker() (--broadcast ticker) in scripts/articles/common.py, and ytticker() in flake.nix.
  • Second Straddle (Commit 293a532, This Compile’s Live Receipt): The Manifest’s live command receipt ([0.2768s]) reads: LOCAL_BILLBOARD=YES | LOCAL_SCROLL_FLAG=YES | REMOTE_BILLBOARD=YES (flipped from LOCAL_BILLBOARD=NO | LOCAL_SCROLL_FLAG=NO | REMOTE_BILLBOARD=NO in the operator’s BEFORE tap).
  • Static Analysis Receipt: Ruff reports All checks passed! (exit 0).

  • Ignitions: Both remote Honeybot ignitions fired and were witnessed in the operator’s terminal (python scripts/articles/common.py --broadcast reboot synced remotes/honeybot/scripts/ and restarted stream.py from pid=2313570 -> 2342353 -> 2344570, and --broadcast ticker --reset activated the 3-card billboard cycle on :10.0). Only the interactive shell wrapper ytticker() in flake.nix awaits a routine exit then nix develop shell re-entry on Pipulate Prime to resolve as a bare word rather than python scripts/articles/common.py --broadcast ticker.

2. BANK

3. DANGLING

  • 5-Pixel Set-Top-Box Bitmap Font Upgrade (logs.py): Reclaim the top border row of #ticker_bar (or expand #ticker_bar by 1 row) to upgrade LED_FONT_3X3 into a true 5-pixel-high bitmap font (5 rows using full/half blocks or 5 physical terminal rows) so middle crossbars on letters like E, A, B, R, S, and 5 have distinct upper and lower counters.
  • Interactive Shell Wrapper Ignition (flake.nix): Re-enter nix develop (or ndq) on Pipulate Prime when convenient so the new ytticker shell function in miscSetupLogic is loaded into the interactive environment.
  • SQLite Background Thread Offload (logs.py): Move the 5-second refresh_tables() SQLite queries (db.get_js_executors() and db.get_content_neg_agents()) into a @work(thread=True) worker in logs.py if further main-thread UI smoothness is desired on the current laptop hardware.

4. SEED

Put these lines in context.txt for the next ride’s first compile (to upgrade #ticker_bar to the 5-pixel-high set-top-box font):

! python3 -c 'import pathlib; t = pathlib.Path("remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py").read_text(); print("FONT_3X3=" + ("YES" if "LED_FONT_3X3" in t else "NO"), "FONT_5ROW=" + ("YES" if "LED_FONT_5" in t else "NO"))'
remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py
scripts/articles/common.py

5. CLOSING

There is a straight line from designing a 5-pixel-high bitmap font for an Ameritech cable set-top box at the dawn of the β€œInformation Superhighway” to carving a double-buffered LED split-flap billboard into a retired laptop streaming Nginx wire logs in 2026. Every generation of hardware and network transportβ€”whether a 1990s television CRT with NTSC overscan and a few kilobytes of VRAM, or a 1080p YouTube H.264 stream competing with ONNX neural speech synthesis on a closet laptopβ€”imposes hard physical boundaries on attention, legibility, and frame pacing. When you respect those boundaries instead of fighting them with heavier frameworks, constraints turn into style: a 0 MB in-process Textual slice replaces a 60 MB floating GUI window, a /tmp/honeybot_ticker.txt file replaces an IPC daemon, and a 4.5-second zero-CPU pinball DMD hold with an idle-gated vertical flip turns hardware starvation into a crisp mechanical cadence that holds a viewer just long enough for Max Headroom to pop in and say hello.

Book Analysis

Ai Editorial Take

What stands out most in this entryβ€”beyond the Linux memory forensics and the Textual UI craftsmanshipβ€”is that you accidentally built an intra-frame video codec inside a terminal emulator. Video encoders like H.264 and VP9 survive bandwidth and compute bottlenecks by distinguishing between expensive continuous-motion P-frames and cheap static holds, dropping down to instantaneous keyframe cuts when the bit budget is exhausted. By pre-allocating the Rich.Text card buffers at load time, holding still frames at zero CPU for 56 ticks, and querying time.monotonic() deltas before deciding whether to play the two intermediate split-flap frames or execute a single-frame atomic cut, logs.py is performing real-time quality-of-service (QoS) frame pacing at the character-cell layer. Combined with the H.264 macroblock survival of 3x3 Unicode block characters (β–ˆ β–€ β–„) over 1-pixel ASCII lines, the terminal is no longer acting merely as a text console being screen-capturedβ€”it is acting as a broadcast-aware compositor that cooperates with the downstream video encoder.

🎨 Hero Banner Image Prompt

A dramatic widescreen graphic-novel ink-and-wash illustration set inside a deep obsidian-slate (#111111) cybernetic broadcast studio. Vertically centered in the composition is a glowing amber and cyan three-row solid-block LED split-flap billboard module sliced seamlessly across the middle of a dark terminal telemetry console, mid-flip between crisp geometric block glyphs while green and gold server log streams flow above and dual intelligence gauges glow below. Subtle mechanical relay latches and a brass tuning fork beside the console evoke frame-time jitter gating and zero-CPU equilibrium against dark moody studio shadows. Full-bleed edge-to-edge composition filling 100% of the canvas with no borders, no frames, no matting, no margins, and no text overlays or lettering.

    • Filename: ameritech-set-top-fonts-idle-gated-led-billboard-honeybot.md
    • Rationale: Connects the author’s 1990s set-top box typography background to solving modern video-stream compression and CPU starvation on a self-hosted broadcast appliance.

Content Potential And Polish

  • Core Strengths:
    • Concrete Linux memory accounting that separates kernel page-cache sharing (Shared_Clean .so pages) from per-process Python/Qt Private_Dirty heap overhead and Nix store inode skew.
    • Zero-sycophancy breakdown of LLM context hoarding, connecting autoregressive prefix copying, Landauer’s principle in attention space, epistemic blindness across browser tabs, and RoPE attention decay.
    • Pragmatic human-factors engineering that accounts for YouTube’s bottom player chrome occlusion, H.264/VP9 chroma subsampling on thin ASCII strokes, and the 10-to-15-second ytwatch viewer bounce window.
    • Elegant resolution of hardware CPU starvation by replacing a 12.5 FPS horizontal crawl with pre-rendered Rich.Text cards held at 0% CPU and an event-loop jitter gate (dt < 0.115s).
  • Suggestions For Polish:
    • When drafting the follow-up article on the 5-pixel Ameritech set-top box font, include a side-by-side visual comparison of 3-row vs. 5-row glyphs for characters with middle crossbars (A, B, E, R, S, 5) to show why the extra two vertical rows eliminate ambiguity.
    • Consider exposing the jitter gate’s fallback counter (how many flips were atomically swapped vs. animated) in the ytticker status output so CPU starvation frequency can be audited over a 24-hour broadcast cycle.

Next Step Prompts

  • Using the SEED probe from Beat 4, design and implement a 5-row set-top-box bitmap font (LED_FONT_5X3 or half-block 6-pixel vertical grid) in remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py that reclaims the top border row of #ticker_bar so letters like A, B, E, R, S, and 5 have distinct upper and lower counters.
  • Offload the synchronous 5-second SQLite queries in SonarApp.refresh_tables() (db.get_js_executors() and db.get_content_neg_agents()) to a background thread in remotes/honeybot/scripts/logs.py so Textual’s main event loop never blocks during database reads.
