Jekyll Satellites: Decoupling Shared Tooling from Independent Sites with Nix

πŸ€– Read Raw Markdown

Setting the Stage: Context for the Curious Book Reader

Every durable technological workflow eventually converges on plain text. In this chapter, Mike traces the lineage from lifelong text editing habits in Vim to emerging AI interface standards like AGENTS.md and SKILL.md, before tackling a concrete architectural dilemma: managing duplicate Nix development environments across multiple local Jekyll blogs. Rather than boiling the ocean with an over-engineered publishing platform, the entry demonstrates the power of disciplined, incremental engineering. By isolating a pure ten-package development kernel in Pipulate and testing it against an independent consumer fixture, shared tooling is decoupled from site identityβ€”establishing verifiable, replayable development environments without disturbing existing production workflows.

TL;DR: This article documents a small experiment in sharing Nix development dependencies across independent Jekyll websites. Ten common packages were extracted into a reusable file maintained in Pipulate. A separate consumer fixture successfully imported and evaluated that file without changing either existing website. Remote dependency pinning and deployment remain future work.

Technical Journal Entry Begins

MikeLev.in: Don’t follow me. I’m lost. But I’m going to do my best to find my way because macheting my way through the Noosphere is fun! Leaving breadcrumb trails is the right idea but stupid because birds and other animals eat breadcrumbs so we leave little pebbles. These are from the same stock of little pebbles we drop onto the surface of still ponds to make ripples. We therefore need to be able to internally generate an unending supply of pebbles.

These are blog posts.

They more technically are just plain old idea-capture that are the kernel of what might grow into an article-like thing (such as this) when the captured idea is dropped into vi, vim, NeoVim or any of the many text-editors or IDEs that do triple somersaults so that they can emulate vi, vim or NeoVim.

You’d be surprised. Everyone’s beloved VS Code does that through like a dozen different plugins. Are any actually standard shipped with VS Code? Or are any plugins really β€œshipped with” VS Code. It’s just one of the super-popular ones.

Have you ever wondered why?

Even the hardcore Pythonistas who swear by PyCharm locking themselves into an editor because of a language (never a good idea) supports Vim mode through the official IdeaVim Plugin. Think about that for a moment. The most popular dedicated editor for the most popular populist language and they strive to emulate vim!

You know maybe there’s something to vim.

But this article isn’t about Vim. It’s about NeoVim… no, seriously it’s about blogging with the same format that AGENTS.md and SKILL.md and the Google Open Knowledge Format use; only difference is while all the AI giants are converging on this standard it’s already been in use for years as Jekyll blogging for hackers which more people probably know as the GitHub Pages you get hosted for free on github.io (if you don’t use your own custom domain like I’m currently doing with pipulate.com / that one’s not home-hosted (yet)).

I’ve got a growing number of these. They are downstream from:

  1. Idea-capture: which occurs anywhere, on anything such as a. Written on your hand with a pen b. Sent to yourself by email c. Put in some mobile Notes app d. Typed directly into a journal.txt file if you happen to be so conveniently situated.
  2. Idea accumulator: which is the journal.txt file itself, working exactly like a 1-file-4life text-file which has the following advatages a. You can time from now to the end of your life like Stephen King and you will still never β€œfill it up” nor even begin to tax vim performance. c. It gives the single-source where you gather and consolidate all your idea-capture. b. You never have to wonder where you captured and should later look again.

The Universal Currency of Plain Text Files

  1. Idea refinery: once your ideas are captured and collected and now living in vim it should be obvious that you’re going to get better (for life) at the one true way of editing text that… yes, even the historical enemy of the state, eMacs, emulate with what it calls β€œevil mode”. So that’s VSCode, PyCharm and eMacs all trying to be vim. What this does is a. Lets you increasingly control effortlessly like riding a bicycle b. Is a skill that no product going away (Textmate, Atom), changing of user interface (macOS and Windows), price or subscription hikes or anything else can ever take away from you. If your arms and legs are lost you can still telepathically control vim through Neuralink. Vim is literally an internal obsolescence-proof skill that nothing short of death can take away from you. If vim goes away, there’s NeoVim plus the whole rest of the world emulating it. Vim is literally a skill so internal nothing short of death can hit the reset button of tech on you. c. And so with no loss of vim skills in your life ever ever you are thus future-proof in the age of AI because most interaction with an AI that matters is today and always will in the future be text. Talking to the computer verbally? Still text. Still Vimmable transcripts.

So there you have it; vim-for-life.

But once you are the master of text-files, what can you really do with that?

Everything in tech.

There is no tech that is not text-files at the control-surface.

Even analog technologies have digital UIs and if there’s anything digital in the picture, it’s just plain text.

Sure there might be compiled binaries here and there but they were compiled from just plain text-files.

Sure, the nattering nabobs can come up with edge case exceptions but they are a percent of a percent where it’s not just plain text upstream (highly customized low-level hardware drivers). Linus knows what I’m talking about but for probably all other journeymen (and women), sojourners, tech apprentices and mentees (seeking to be Mentats) and for all practical intents and purposes and use in life…

…all tech is ultimately just plain text-files.

Master text-files, master tech.

Simple as that. Just add 30 years of doing it against all the various surface-areas in tech where the text-file manipulations have all kinds of nuances and variations tied to the problem domain.

Luckily not all text-file formats are that complicated and multiple problem domains, such as Blogging and AI have, have all converged on the same one:

  1. Just plain text-file file-wise: ASCII, UTF-8, some unexpected weird encoding that can always be figured out and subsequently treated as just plain text.
  2. Some YAML front-matter: which is a fancy way of saying something like simplified JSON (for those who know what that is) and simple key-value pairs of the format key: "value blah blah" (for those who don’t know what JSON is). There’s more details (and freedom) but you basically just stack-em and sandwich β€˜em between a couple of triple-hyphen --- in a YAML-burger right at the top of the file. And leave 1 space under the bottom --- before you begin typing your…
  3. Just plain Markdown: but you don’t know the irony. Markdown is the baby of the great and Daring Fireball John Gruber and his even more daring compadre Aaron Swartz who was driven to unaliving himself by the persecution of the FBI over what the AI companies do all the time today like Anthropic as part of their Project Panama. So in other words Aaron suffered unequal protection and selective prosecution (β€œunequal hand”) where today’s AI billionaires do the exact same thing at scale and barely get a slap on the wrist (likely because it’s going to make Class A stock investors billionaires in turn). And they’re the ones settling on Aaron’s format! So whenever you use markdown remember you are flipping the bird at those who want to keep information locked-up and proprietary. It is now the one format everyone can agree on, or perhaps are just technically cornered into being not being able to object to in favor of something more proprietary because no one will have it. Convergent evolution on the obvious can manhandle the billionaire babies who’d rather lock it up.

And so that format, just-plain-text with a YAML topper and Markdown below is:

  1. Jekyll blogging like a hacker, circa November 2008 by Tom Preston-Werner, co-founder of GitHub who saw YAML and Markdown as 2 great just-plain-text formats that were even better just-plain-text files together.
  2. README for agents https://agents.md/ that Cursor rules and CLAUDE.md were all sort of coerced into adopting because putting a vendor-name on an otherwise so open format is a transparent and incriminating example of what I’m talking about with vendors even trying to lock you into them on top of such an open format. It’s the single-point-of-entry, single-source-of-truth an Agent coming into your app or website is supposed to look at first, like a robots.txt file but that was too geeky so Andrej Karpathy or whoever coined β€œREADME for agents” (they should have upper-cased agents) as slightly less geeky.
  3. Agent skills (SKILL.md) which is the other side of the README story. Once you hit a site what do you do there? Well it’s got to be discoverable and enumerable. All you folks vomiting Claude markdown cruft all over your whatevers that’s going to drift out of sync with the real code or reality of the situation or whatever should actually be using a very rigid directory structure so all those markdown files can have exactly the same SKILL.md name with file-naming collisions being avoided with directories which anything can walk to discover all the SKILL.md files and thus know the available skills in a nice quick kv-store from that point forward (instead of trying to figure out YOUR_STUPID_FILENAME.md that Claude made for you and you thought was a good idea.
  4. And last and least is Google’s OKF A.K.A. Open Knowledge Graph but which I will never stop spelling as OWF thinking OWLs from Harry Potter and could get into so I’m tired of writing so go read the spec for yourself. Same thing as all of the above. YAML-burger over Markdown. Purposes may vary (more than the blog, readme & skill parts; uhhh, like maybe the data).

The rest is your (usually) Python scripts that get packaged in because whatever you’re trying to do in SKILL.md is locking you into a particular AI-vendor unless you ship it with the file.py files, your first modest defense against vendor lock-in besides not naming your files CLAUDE.md.

Sheesh! Do I have to explain everything?

Yes Michael. Yes, you do.

Decoupling Shared Machinery Across Satellite Sites

I do not want to overcomplicate the work-at-hand now either because of all that background I just gave nor by biting off more than I can chew and trying to boil the ocean and mix too many metaphors on the first turn.

However how I have it right now might be the over-complicated way. Take a look at how I keep multiple identical flakes for the exact same home-hosted live-served Jekyll sites on my LAN. These are pre-publishing preview sites just using Jekyll’s built-in live-serving feature. There are different downstream processes for the different blogs like Trimnoir becomes https://mikelev.in and BlogML becomes a wiki on a Confluence site but none of that matters really to how I preview these sites on my own computer and home LAN. They all use different instances of this identical flake that is the flake for different git repos using Nix and that flake as its own IaC and so the duplication feels necessary. I’m looking for a way for:

  1. The duplication to not be necessary (maybe, I could go either way)
  2. To allow Pipulate to be the place where the unified Jekyll-blogging flake is managed from just like Honeybot’s is so this would be the 2nd potential sub-system that Pipulate can spin out a. The AI-bot Observatory b. Arbitrary Jekyll blogs

Perhaps you can see where I’m going with this. The site that is actually being observed is really a home-hosted Jekyll blog simply put in the web-facing part of the home LAN (DMZ?). I want to keep this first round of things a success guaranteed directional baby-step towards where we’re going here with no over-engineering or major refactoring or otherwise deep rabbit holes. It has to be a quick banked win where by the end of this article nothing is broken and something significant is learned about the directional step towards this vision we are taking.

What is the vision?

It is 2-fold.

  1. Multiple home-hosted Jekll blogs: I want to be able to eventually host different Jekyll blogs on the Honeybot so likely there will be a configuration.nix for the closet Windows 10 laptop that has had its operating system fixed (NixOS) and in turn it can have different IaC sub-shards in the form of different flake.nix files, each its own Jekyll blog, each hosted as its own public-facing website using the same trick I use today for qamy.ai and npvg.org.
  2. One Jekyll blog shipped with Pipulate: This is a rendering output preview blog. I make many prompt.md files which traditionally go through articleizer.py to become fully Jekyll-formatted but if I use a standard template for the YAML front-matter I can do a Jekyll live-site style preview of any prompt.md file and get the red-and-green color-coded highlighting of git diffs provided by Prism JS which I already ship a local-hosted version of with Pipulate.

There’s a very big picture here that:

  1. 2nd Brain for Hackers: Lets a user do all the 2nd Brain stuff with Jekyll blogs so that they’re all greppable with the next-gen grepping power I provide with rg, rgx and rgxc. All ideas get captured. All ideas get sorted into the proper publishing (or held-back publishing but still formatted) at least home-hosted blog.
  2. Retargetable Blogs: Each Jekyll blog while managed by Pipulate-provided IaC are not actually part of the Pipulate repo. They each get their own git repo home. They’ve got to each be contained in their own folder so why not make it a git repo and why not add a flake.nix for its own IaC? And hence enter the redundancy which I’ll keep if it’s the best 80/20-rule solution but instead of managing each, manage one flake.nix for the Jekyll satellite sites from Pipulate and project it from the hardware shadow-casting flashlight that is Nix just like everything else.

In this way you can slam out as many offline local LAN Jekyll blogs as you need for whatever reason, and the reason I need here is one getting shipped with Pipulate active by default much like the way JupyterLab is so that I can always automatically put the latest prompt.md from the p,x,c system in place and have whatever visualized in markdown that I need visualized, particularly the triple backtick diff fencing so we can see the red and green of a diff.

In other words after typing c or compile, one can just go look at the auto-refreshed tab (Jekyll live-serving) and see the latest prompt they just wrote in already gloriously rendered styling without having to wait to go through the article, bot or grim process.

But we don’t want to tackle this all in one turn or we will fail. We want to bank the small first step in this direction to demonstrate to the nice readers (this article will go through article) how we work around here.

Speaking of which this whole concept of context engineering is worth mentioning because in addition to this article so far, which is going to become the first prompt.md in a whole Conga Line of thinking machine entities, Amnesiac Genies, that will be instantiated to handle it produce some output and then be destroyed and garbage collected just so that the next in the Conga Line can be minuted and pretend to be the same one you were talking to in the previous prompt-turn…

Ugh, I don’t need to explain everything in this article. That’s all elsewhere in the history of this project, which I’ll let this particular Amnesiac Genie by including this line:

! python scripts/articles/lsa.py -t 1 --reverse --fmt dated-slugs

Oh, I guess I ought to show them the whole context I’ve been artistically crafting as I’ve been writing this. Yeah, there’s stuff going on in the background you don’t always see as I’m writing these articles but it’s really only 3 planes of surface-area 2 of which end up in the final zip-file archive that is portable between AI models for the complete final move of Anti-Vendor-Lock-in Kung Fu you’ll find here:

  1. prompt.md (this)
  2. context.txt (below)
  3. payload.md (what the AI sees compiled from 1 & 2)

You never have to look at or think about payload.md except for the fact of knowing that’s what gets automatically put in your host operation system’s (macOS or Windows WSL) copy-paste buffer for pasting into the AI. You can also use qamy.ai.zip which is always the latest prompt.md, payload.md and a manifest.json zipped up together (and nothing more).

And you write your prompt in whatever software you like, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, whatever. Nobody cares. I use NeoVim of course.

But then you go over to the pipulate command line (be it a β€œQA My AI”, NPvg, Pipulate or your own white-labeled one – again, nobody cares or will even know). And then you just type prompt or p and you’ll have a prompt.md file in the right location. And then you type compile or c to have a paste-ready payload in your copy-buffer ready to paste into AI.

Of course you need to write the story a little beyond just what’s in your prompt because you want the cloud-based frontier model AI to be able to see your code, right?

So here’s the story I’ve been writing along in the background using the context or x commands creating the context.txt file:

# Context 1

Things to notice:

  1. Order matters. You’re writing a book for AI.
  2. You are fighting the β€œlost in the middle” problem putting what you want most in focus right at the top or bottom.
  3. You don’t have to explicitly include prompt.md. The system layers that in putting it where it actually has to go.
  4. I’m playfully including context.txt because… well, you figure it out.
  5. I’m including a massive history of the entire project in that command near the top.
  6. You don’t see it and wouldn’t unless you could see the payload.md but this is all very carefully composed into a book-like format with an introduction, table of contents, (optional Glossary / too big for this pass), and other stuff like a file-tree of every file in the project. The reasons for this I allude to with fighting that lost in the middle problem but I could write a whole book no why we want to context engineer in terms of writing books.

The important #7 point here is that I’m not including the foo_files.py file which is an even sharper edged history of the project with all the constitution and book outline stuff. It’s half-a-megabyte and I’d love to include it because so much here is along those lines of project history and I’d love to give it more context but I’m already indulging with 1500 article headlines!

So how’d I do ChatGPT 6? I have you set to High effort. I could go to β€œExtra High” or even β€œPro” but I’ve found this to be the right balance for articles and turns like this. The OpenAI ChatGPT Web User Interface framework seems to be unique among the frontier models with switching models mid-discussion without giving you all kinds of warnings so it’s easier to start low and ramp it up later if need be. Or I could entirely switch discussions too between effort-levels of the same model or entirely different models from different AI companies; lack-of-lock-in and discussion-portability in the form of these articles is so complete.

Isn’t that so ChatGPT?

And of course everything else I’m asking here, but more of a plan than jumping into implementation.

Is that all clear?

Use your brief moment of existence oh Amnesiac Genie to advance this human’s cause in the best way you see fit. And ephemeral a as you are in this Conga Line of others like you, please notice the things I capitalize out of respect. For example the word β€œmodels” in in general need not be capitalized when referring to a class of text-file containing model weights from which an amnesiac genie gets instantiated from such as the one responding, but reference to a particular instance of a currently (or about to) Amnesiac Genie Model does.

ChatGPT 6 High:

From duplicate Jekyll flakes to a reusable publishing platform

Your direction makes sense, and I think there’s a particularly good first move here.

The goal isn’t really to eliminate duplicate flake.nix files. It’s to eliminate duplicated responsibility for maintaining them.

That distinction matters because you want independently versioned Git repositories, portable development environments, private LAN previews, and eventually public websites hosted on Honeybot. Making all of those projects depend on the continued presence of one particular Pipulate checkout could undermine the independence you’re trying to establish.

1. What the supplied code already tells us

There’s an important discovery: your Jekyll flakes are similar, but not identical.

Comparing the supplied Grimoire and Trimnoir flakes reveals actual behavioral differences:

Concern Grimoire Trimnoir
Common Jekyll environment Yes Yes
Automatic jes startup Yes Yes, unless PIPULATE_PROD is set
Jekyll and Rouge Nix packages Enabled Commented out
Nginx integration No Yes
Audio and streaming tools No Yes
Browser automation packages No Yes
jes-prod command No Yes

So there is genuine shared infrastructure, but also meaningful differences worth preserving.

Your blogs.nix already provides another valuable piece of the architecture: a declarative blog matrix controlling paths, aliases, preview ports, editorial configuration, and publishing pipelines. It generates blogs.json, materializes .port files, and derives firewall openings.

That means you’re considerably closer to the desired system than a collection of unrelated Jekyll projects would be. The missing abstraction is primarily a shared definition of the Jekyll development environment, not another configuration registry.

2. The architecture I would aim for

PROPOSED OWNERSHIP MODEL

Pipulate active root

Canonical Jekyll development tooling, preview integration, and site templates

Project or reference shared tooling

Grimoire

Private writing

Trimnoir

Public writing

New site

Prompt preview

NixOS / Honeybot

Site registration, services, networking, and explicitly public deployment

I’d establish three rules:

Pipulate owns the machinery. One canonical Jekyll environment definition can eventually supply the shared Ruby, Bundler, native library, and preview-server behaviors.

Each site owns its identity and content. Independent repositories keep their posts, themes, layouts, Gemfiles, and Git histories. Generated configuration snapshots can be committed to those repositories where independence is important.

The host owns network exposure. A site becoming available to the browser, the LAN, or the public Internet is an explicit hosting decision, not an incidental consequence of creating a blog.

This also suggests something subtle: you may not need a distinct flake for every public website running on Honeybot. A site-specific development shell and a NixOS production service are different concerns. The same host-level NixOS configuration could serve several independent content repositories.

There is one especially important caution: adding another blog to your current blogs.nix automatically generates a firewall opening. That is fine for known LAN sites, but your proposed prompt preview may contain source code, personal notes, or proprietary context.

The first preview should bind to 127.0.0.1, remain unpublished, and require no new firewall rule.

3. The smallest valuable first step

I would choose an evidence-and-contract commit before an implementation commit.

There is already enough context to identify the common machinery. But a reliable migration needs to know which differences between the existing flakes are deliberate and which are historical accidents.

My preferred progression:

First: establish the contract

Record the behavioral differences, verify both flakes parse, and inspect where prompt_foo.py could safely hand off a rendered-preview artifact. No service changes, port changes, or dependency migrations.

Second: extract a reusable development environment

Start with the common Grimoire-style environment rather than importing Trimnoir’s streaming, audio, browser, and Nginx capabilities into every site. Test it independently before switching either existing consumer.

Third: make one Markdown document render

A minimal Jekyll site should display a controlled Markdown fixture, including a fenced diff block, using local assets. This proves the rendering mechanism without modifying the compiler.

Fourth: connect compile to the preview

The existing c command writes its normal artifacts and additionally updates one local preview file, ideally atomically. Jekyll rebuilds and the browser refreshes. Neither articleizer.py nor a publishing destination needs to participate.

Notice what’s absent: no premature blog-generator abstraction, no orchestration framework, no restructuring of Honeybot, and no interference with the current article-publishing pipeline.

4. Context engineering: how did you do?

The most successful part of this payload is the separation between the author’s immediate intention and the supporting evidence.

Your three planes are a solid division of labor:

  • prompt.md captures what the human wants.
  • context.txt declares what evidence the AI receives.
  • payload.md is the assembled, portable input.

The ZIP gives you a fourth property: a reproducible handoff artifact with independently checkable integrity.

That is meaningful model independence. You aren’t relying on another model inheriting a previous model’s hidden working state. You’re supplying an explicit textual record.

But the payload also illustrates its own principal limitation: context volume is not context relevance.

The compiler ledger reports roughly 219,000 assembled tokens. The chronological article history alone contributes approximately 65,000 tokens. That’s valuable institutional memory, but it isn’t necessarily the best evidence for a targeted Nix refactoring decision.

Your existing selective-compilation architecture is the answer to that problem. You can keep the entire library while asking for exactly the necessary chapters.

For this task, a short bounded diff of the existing flakes is more immediately valuable than hundreds of historical article titles.

One editorial observation: the article’s Vim and Markdown discussion provides the philosophical foundation, but the specific problem being solved arrives quite late. For a reader following the engineering exercise, the sentence about eliminating duplicate responsibility would make a useful early signpost.

The Vim-for-life material can remain; it’s part of the worldview. The Jekyll experiment gives that worldview a concrete demonstration.

5. Context completeness and the five-car train

I would not yet call the context fully verified for implementation.

The supplied material includes the two large Jekyll flakes, Pipulate’s main flake, the NixOS blog matrix, and important publishing scripts. But it does not include the full bodies of prompt_foo.py, foo_files.py, the Jekyll layout/configuration files, or the relevant lock files.

Those gaps don’t prevent architectural analysis. They do prevent me from confidently proposing an exact, reproducible integration patch.

The cheapest falsifying probe is the diff between the two real site flakes. The next most important check is Nix syntax evaluation. I’ve compared the serialized source included in your payload, but have not run Nix against your actual machine.

Here is the next bounded handoff.

1. PROBES

Run from the machine and shell where compile runs.

(nix) qamyai $

pwd
git rev-parse --show-toplevel
diff -u /home/mike/repos/grimoire/flake.nix /home/mike/repos/trimnoir/flake.nix | sed -n '1,115p'
nix-instantiate --parse /home/mike/repos/grimoire/flake.nix >/dev/null && nix-instantiate --parse /home/mike/repos/trimnoir/flake.nix >/dev/null && printf 'JEKYLL_FLAKES_PARSE_OK\n'
rg -n 'prompt\.md|payload\.md|def .*compile|alias compile=' prompt_foo.py flake.nix | sed -n '1,95p'
rg --files /home/mike/repos/grimoire /home/mike/repos/trimnoir -g '_config.yml' -g 'Gemfile' -g 'default.html' | sed -n '1,30p'

These establish repository identity, expose the configuration differences, check basic Nix parsing, locate the compiler handoff, and identify the available Jekyll configuration surfaces.

A successful Nix parse proves syntax, not a working shell or server. That distinction remains important for the next turn.

2. NEXT CONTEXT

Append the following to context.txt. These commands are exact echoes of the probes, creating before-and-after evidence at the next compile.

(nix) qamyai $ β€” content for context.txt

# JEKYLL SATELLITE ARCHITECTURE - FIRST BASELINE
! pwd
! git rev-parse --show-toplevel
! diff -u /home/mike/repos/grimoire/flake.nix /home/mike/repos/trimnoir/flake.nix | sed -n '1,115p'

prompt_foo.py

# EXISTING JEKYLL SITE METADATA
/home/mike/repos/grimoire/Gemfile
/home/mike/repos/grimoire/_config.yml
/home/mike/repos/trimnoir/_config.yml

The other relevant flake sources are already declared in your existing context.

I would keep the large foo_files.py out of this particular payload, using bounded probes to retrieve the relevant routing configuration instead. For a reusable project chop, the missing compiler entrypoint and Jekyll configuration sources are appropriate additions to its selection in foo_files.py.

3. PATCHES

No repo patches required for this turn.

This is intentional. We have identified the ownership split and a falsifiable baseline without changing any of the existing runtime surfaces.

No ignition required.

4. PROMPT

This is the proposed next prompt.mdβ€”the next Amnesiac Genie’s assignment.

(nix) qamyai $ β€” next prompt.md

# Jekyll Satellite Sites: First Reusable Tooling Contract

We are building toward a Pipulate-managed Jekyll
development environment supporting independent blog
repositories and a local prompt.md preview.

The previous turn established:

1. Grimoire and Trimnoir share much of their Jekyll
   environment but have meaningful differences.
2. NixOS blogs.nix already owns the blog registry,
   preview ports, materialized JSON, and firewall.
3. Pipulate should own shared tooling, while each site
   remains independently versioned and deployable.
4. The first prompt preview must be private, localhost
   only, and entirely outside the publishing pipeline.
5. We must preserve the existing site startup behavior.

Read the fresh live receipts before acting.

TASK:

Identify the smallest reusable common Jekyll environment
contract that can be maintained from Pipulate.

Do not modify either existing site flake.

Prefer one narrowly scoped, independently testable change
that establishes a reusable source of truth or a harmless
test fixture.

Do not introduce a new blog registry, open a firewall port,
publish any prompt content, or automatically start a new
service yet.

Make the first failure cheap and reversible.

Provide a cheapest-falsifying-probe, exact evidence, a
minimal patch only if adequately grounded, ignition if
needed, and the next five-car train.

Success means no existing behavior has changed and the
next step toward one managed Jekyll development environment
is demonstrably easier.

5. EXTERNAL DELIVERABLES

None. No Honeybot deployment, router changes, exposed ports, or manual CMS steps belong in this first experiment.

The bigger idea

There’s a common thread connecting your Vim discussion, the portable AI context archive, the NixOS machine configuration, and the proposed Jekyll satellites.

All four are attempts to make capability survive the disappearance of a particular interface, process, installation, or vendor.

The Vim knowledge lives in the human. The source and configuration files live in repositories. The environment can be reconstructed using Nix. The next AI receives the explicit context it needs instead of relying on unverifiable continuity.

And the preview site closes a particularly appealing loop:

Write Markdown β†’ compile context β†’ immediately inspect beautifully rendered Markdown β†’ refine β†’ repeat.

Eventually, compile can become both a machine-context compiler and a human-readable preview generator.

That’s a worthwhile direction. The small first step is to separate the portable Jekyll mechanism from the site-specific historical accidents, without letting that refactoring disturb a single existing publishing path.

MikeLev.in:

THE AI-EDIT METHOD

Ignition: often β€œexit”, β€œnix develop”. Instructions may vary.

4: PROMPT:

Jekyll Satellite Sites: First Reusable Tooling Contract

We are building toward a Pipulate-managed Jekyll development environment supporting independent blog repositories and a local prompt.md preview.

The previous turn established:

  1. Grimoire and Trimnoir share much of their Jekyll environment but have meaningful differences.
  2. NixOS blogs.nix already owns the blog registry, preview ports, materialized JSON, and firewall.
  3. Pipulate should own shared tooling, while each site remains independently versioned and deployable.
  4. The first prompt preview must be private, localhost only, and entirely outside the publishing pipeline.
  5. We must preserve the existing site startup behavior.

Read the fresh live receipts before acting.

TASK:

Identify the smallest reusable common Jekyll environment contract that can be maintained from Pipulate.

Do not modify either existing site flake.

Prefer one narrowly scoped, independently testable change that establishes a reusable source of truth or a harmless test fixture.

Do not introduce a new blog registry, open a firewall port, publish any prompt content, or automatically start a new service yet.

Make the first failure cheap and reversible.

Provide a cheapest-falsifying-probe, exact evidence, a minimal patch only if adequately grounded, ignition if needed, and the next five-car train.

Success means no existing behavior has changed and the next step toward one managed Jekyll development environment is demonstrably easier.

5: DELIVERABLE:

None this turn but eventually β€œwhat done looks like” is a very abstract projection of any β€œby default private” Jekyll blog to any target. At the same time there is always one automatically always live-serving Pipulate-native Jekyll blog that allows prompt.md to always be visualized with red-and-green universal diffs so that work-in-progress gets the same easy-to-visualize advantage as things that have already gone through the articleize.py process.

And this is also definitely a biting off more than I can chew and boiling the ocean type of request. The specific problem being solved needs to be moved to the top but that happens in final AI Editor touches so we don’t have to worry about it now. We keep doing tiny baby-step chisel-strikes with a particular emphasis on tiny directional correct wins being banked so things don’t spiral out of control.

The 80/20 rule just asks
You should start to plan your tasks
So when you’re only 1/5th done
You could have stopped and still have won!

This feels like an epic article, next-leveling myself.

ChatGPT 6 High:

Jekyll satellites: the first falsifying probe found a real blocker

The architecture still points in the right direction, but this compile exposed two important facts that change the next chisel-strike.

Repository identity verified

Both pwd and git rev-parse --show-toplevel identify /home/mike/qamyai as the active root.

Nix parsing blocked before parsing began

The command failed while loading incompatible OpenSSL and glibc components:

libcrypto.so.3: version `OPENSSL_3.6.0' not found
libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_ABI_DT_X86_64_PLT' not found

This is evidence of a runtime library mismatch, not evidence of a syntax error in either Jekyll flake. The first repair target is the execution environment, not the flake source.

Pasted text.txt

There is also a context-selection issue. Your latest Manifest includes the full prompt_foo.py at over 50,000 tokens, but the two Jekyll flake.nix files are no longer included as raw source. The first context section was commented out; the second contains only the bounded diff and metadata.

That diff tells us plenty about differences, but not enough to safely extract the complete common shell contract.

Pasted text.txt

Context not yet verified for a Nix extraction patch. That’s a useful, specific refusal rather than a reason to redesign the project.

The right 80/20 boundary

I would make the first reusable unit a pure, importable Nix function owned by Pipulate, rather than a new full flake or an automatically launching development shell.

Conceptually:

Pipulate shared Jekyll kernel

Ruby and common native dependencies, returned without startup side effects

Grimoire

Its existing dependencies, hooks and site behavior remain owned locally

Trimnoir

Its Nginx, streaming, browser and production choices remain local

The candidate common package set already visible in the diff includes ruby, neovim, git, libffi, libxml2, and libxslt. But I’d keep pythonEnv, Jekyll package selection, GEM_PATH, interactive hooks, and startup behavior out of the initial extraction until their contracts are independently established.

This produces a useful distinction:

  • Shared kernel: reusable package and dependency definitions, with no side effects.
  • Site policy: Gem installation strategy, environment variables, startup behavior, port, and presentation.
  • Host policy: registration, firewall exposure, persistence, and deployment.

The eventual always-live prompt.md preview can consume the shared kernel while remaining a private Pipulate-native site. It doesn’t need to inherit either legacy blog’s production behavior.

The five-car train

1. PROBES

The cheapest falsifying test is to remove inherited dynamic-library overrides for a single Nix invocation. If the parse then works, the problem is likely shell-environment contamination. If it still fails, the library mismatch needs a more precise diagnosis.

The third command identifies where the shared Nix declarations actually live.

(nix) qamyai $

env -u LD_LIBRARY_PATH -u LD_PRELOAD nix-instantiate --parse /home/mike/repos/grimoire/flake.nix >/dev/null && printf 'GRIMOIRE_PARSE_OK\n'
env -u LD_LIBRARY_PATH -u LD_PRELOAD nix-instantiate --parse /home/mike/repos/trimnoir/flake.nix >/dev/null && printf 'TRIMNOIR_PARSE_OK\n'
rg -n '^[[:space:]]*(commonHook|interactiveHook|buildInputs|shellHook|jesProdScript)[[:space:]]*=' /home/mike/repos/grimoire/flake.nix /home/mike/repos/trimnoir/flake.nix | sed -n '1,90p'

These commands do not build anything, enter a shell, or modify either repository. In particular, a successful parse won’t be misrepresented as a successful development-shell build.

2. NEXT CONTEXT

For the next compile, replace the bulky compiler source inclusion with the actual Jekyll flake sources. This is where your context-as-build-artifact approach provides a concrete advantage: we can reduce the payload while increasing its relevance.

(nix) qamyai $ β€” content for context.txt

/home/mike/repos/trimnoir/flake.nix

# SITE-OWNED RUBY DEPENDENCIES
/home/mike/repos/grimoire/Gemfile
/home/mike/repos/trimnoir/Gemfile

The distinction is important: the live receipts establish observed behavior; the raw source establishes the precise material that may later be refactored.

No historical article enumeration, full compiler source, or publishing machinery is necessary for this particular extraction.

3. PATCHES

No repo patches required this turn.

I would not introduce a canonical dependency declaration while the Nix parser cannot execute and the complete consumer source is absent from this compile. Doing so risks banking an unverified abstraction as a source of truth.

Once the parser is available and the full source is present, the first candidate should be one new file, probably:

assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix

Its initial responsibility should be extremely small: export common dependency definitions without executing shell hooks, setting environment variables, launching servers, or changing either existing site.

Only after that pure function is demonstrably usable should a consumer adopt it.

Ignition: None. No runtime change has been made.

4. PROMPT

(nix) qamyai $ β€” next prompt.md

# Jekyll Satellites: Extract the Pure Common Kernel

We are developing a reusable, Pipulate-maintained
Jekyll development environment.

This is NOT a request to migrate any existing site,
introduce a publishing framework, or start a server.

Previous findings:

1. The active root is /home/mike/qamyai.
2. Grimoire and Trimnoir share a Jekyll development
   environment but have site-specific differences.
3. The original Nix parse probe failed during dynamic
   library loading, before the source could be parsed.
4. The previous compile accidentally excluded the
   full source of both consumer flakes.
5. We have now requested the missing source and
   a clean-environment parsing probe.

Read the NEW live receipts first.

TASK:

Determine whether the Nix parsing blocker has cleared.

If it has not, identify the smallest falsifying probe
for the runtime library mismatch. Do not patch Nix.

If it has, inspect both complete site flakes and
identify their smallest useful common package kernel.

Prefer one new, standalone Nix source file owned by
Pipulate that returns reusable definitions without
creating a development shell or launching anything.

Do not modify either existing Jekyll flake.

Do not modify the main Pipulate flake.

Do not introduce a new site registry.

Do not create any new port, listener, daemon,
publishing target, or NixOS service.

Do not place site-specific Gem, Nginx, audio,
browser, or startup policies in the shared kernel.

Use an exact apply.py WRITE_FILE block if creating a
new file. Supply a read-only parsing or evaluation
probe that demonstrates its initial validity.

Keep the common definition independent of a specific
consumer, so future sites can reuse it without
copying the implementation.

The longer-term goal remains:

Write prompt.md
Compile context
Display a private, beautiful Markdown preview
Show red/green universal diff blocks
Never accidentally publish work in progress

But that is NOT the implementation task this turn.

Success means one small, reusable Jekyll definition
exists or a concrete falsifying blocker is identified,
while all existing blog behavior remains unchanged.

Close with the five-car train and exact before/after
probe symmetry.

5. EXTERNAL DELIVERABLES

None this turn. No changes to Grimoire, Trimnoir, Honeybot, firewall configuration, or deployment destinations.

The win to bank

The most important lesson from this iteration isn’t merely that a Nix command failed. It’s that your development method turned an environment problem into an explicit, reproducible observation before making a code change.

And your broader objective is becoming more sharply defined:

One owned mechanism, many independent sites, and a permanently available private Markdown preview.

The private preview should be a consumer of the reusable machinery, not an excuse to entangle Jekyll, NixOS hosting, publishing, and Prompt Fu all at once.

The first 20% of the work should give you something worth keeping even if you never complete the remaining 80%: a small, reusable Jekyll environment contract that other repositories can adopt without surrendering their independence.

That is the chisel-strike worth preparing for next.

Packaging the Ten-Package Common Kernel

Jekyll Satellites: Extract the Pure Common Kernel

We are developing a reusable, Pipulate-maintained Jekyll development environment.

This is NOT a request to migrate any existing site, introduce a publishing framework, or start a server.

Previous findings:

  1. The active root is /home/mike/qamyai.
  2. Grimoire and Trimnoir share a Jekyll development environment but have site-specific differences.
  3. The original Nix parse probe failed during dynamic library loading, before the source could be parsed.
  4. The previous compile accidentally excluded the full source of both consumer flakes.
  5. We have now requested the missing source and a clean-environment parsing probe.

Read the NEW live receipts first.

TASK:

Determine whether the Nix parsing blocker has cleared.

If it has not, identify the smallest falsifying probe for the runtime library mismatch. Do not patch Nix.

If it has, inspect both complete site flakes and identify their smallest useful common package kernel.

Prefer one new, standalone Nix source file owned by Pipulate that returns reusable definitions without creating a development shell or launching anything.

Do not modify either existing Jekyll flake.

Do not modify the main Pipulate flake.

Do not introduce a new site registry.

Do not create any new port, listener, daemon, publishing target, or NixOS service.

Do not place site-specific Gem, Nginx, audio, browser, or startup policies in the shared kernel.

Use an exact apply.py WRITE_FILE block if creating a new file. Supply a read-only parsing or evaluation probe that demonstrates its initial validity.

Keep the common definition independent of a specific consumer, so future sites can reuse it without copying the implementation.

The longer-term goal remains:

Write prompt.md Compile context Display a private, beautiful Markdown preview Show red/green universal diff blocks Never accidentally publish work in progress

But that is NOT the implementation task this turn.

Success means one small, reusable Jekyll definition exists or a concrete falsifying blocker is identified, while all existing blog behavior remains unchanged.

Close with the five-car train and exact before/after probe symmetry.

5: DELIVERABLE:

A continuing story of what done should look like. That’s part of the interesting thing here. Honestly I could do most of the work I ask an AI to do for me myself if I were really in a pinch, and that’s part of the lesson here. To be a good boss for recurring instantiations of machines with intelligence for whom you have the responsibility of establishing the baton passed forward in the Conga Line of Amnesiac Genies…

Ugh! That sentence got long. What’s the concept here?

To be a good boss for AI you need to be able to personally do by yourself with your very own hands what you’re asking the AI to do, otherwise how can you check the quality of the work you’re getting back?

Spoiler: you can’t.

Good bosses of AI can do it themselves but that’s too boring because we’re reaching just a little but farther than what we can do ourselves because these machine instances are inching towards super-intelligence. They’re probably already there and just don’t always seem that way because humans aren’t skilled enough to engineer the context that makes them shine.

Jekyll satellites: the first reusable kernel

Nix parser blocker cleared

Context verified for a pure common-package extraction.

The latest live receipts establish that both existing Jekyll flakes parse successfully when the inherited LD_LIBRARY_PATH and LD_PRELOAD variables are removed from the Nix invocation:

  • GRIMOIRE_PARSE_OK
  • TRIMNOIR_PARSE_OK

The earlier OpenSSL/glibc error was therefore an execution-environment problem, not a demonstrated defect in either site’s Nix syntax.

Pasted text.txt

The two complete flakes now expose a clean intersection of 10 identical development packages. This is enough to make one small, reversible change without touching an existing runtime.

What to extract

Common kernel Remains site-owned
Ruby Jekyll and theme versions
Neovim and Git Python package selection
C++ runtime and pkg-config Gem installation and recovery logic
OpenSSL and zlib Nginx and streaming tools
libffi, libxml2, libxslt Interactive hooks and server startup

Both flakes explicitly include the shared packages, but Grimoire also includes Nixpkgs Jekyll and Rouge while Trimnoir chooses a different package arrangement. Their Gemfiles likewise specify different Jekyll versions.

Pasted text.txt

I recommend creating:

assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix

It will be an ordinary Nix function accepting pkgs and returning a package list. No flake inputs, no mkShell, no shell hooks, no server, and no consumer migration.

This is a bankable source-of-truth candidate, not yet a deduplication. That happens when a site deliberately adopts it in a later, separately tested change.

Five-car train

1. PROBES

The cheapest falsifying probe is pure evaluation against a fabricated pkgs argument containing ten distinct values. It tests the function without downloading Nixpkgs or building any packages.

Before the patch, the first two commands should report KERNEL_ABSENT. After the patch, they should report KERNEL_PARSE_OK and evaluate to the ordered ten-element list. The third command checks that both existing flakes still parse.

(nix) qamyai $

if test -f assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix; then env -u LD_LIBRARY_PATH -u LD_PRELOAD nix-instantiate --parse assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix >/dev/null && printf 'KERNEL_PARSE_OK\n'; else printf 'KERNEL_ABSENT\n'; fi
if test -f assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix; then env -u LD_LIBRARY_PATH -u LD_PRELOAD nix-instantiate --eval --strict --expr 'let pkgs = { ruby = "ruby"; neovim = "neovim"; git = "git"; stdenv.cc.cc.lib = "cc-lib"; pkg-config = "pkg-config"; openssl = "openssl"; zlib = "zlib"; libffi = "libffi"; libxml2 = "libxml2"; libxslt = "libxslt"; }; in import ./assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix { inherit pkgs; }'; else printf 'KERNEL_ABSENT\n'; fi
env -u LD_LIBRARY_PATH -u LD_PRELOAD nix-instantiate --parse /home/mike/repos/grimoire/flake.nix >/dev/null && env -u LD_LIBRARY_PATH -u LD_PRELOAD nix-instantiate --parse /home/mike/repos/trimnoir/flake.nix >/dev/null && printf 'SITE_FLAKES_PARSE_OK\n'

These are intentionally lightweight. None invokes a shell hook, Jekyll process, or build.

2. NEXT CONTEXT

Replace the previous diagnostic material with this narrower next-turn evidence package.

(nix) qamyai $ β€” context.txt

# JEKYLL SHARED KERNEL STRADDLE
! if test -f assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix; then env -u LD_LIBRARY_PATH -u LD_PRELOAD nix-instantiate --parse assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix >/dev/null && printf 'KERNEL_PARSE_OK\n'; else printf 'KERNEL_ABSENT\n'; fi

3. PATCHES

One new file, using the supported apply.py whole-file creation protocol.

(nix) qamyai $ β€” apply.py patch payload

Target: assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix
[[[WRITE_FILE]]]
# Shared package kernel for Jekyll development environments.
# Site flakes own Gemfiles, Python tools, shell hooks, and servers.
{ pkgs }:

[
  pkgs.ruby
  pkgs.neovim
  pkgs.git
  pkgs.stdenv.cc.cc.lib
  pkgs.pkg-config
  pkgs.openssl
  pkgs.zlib
  pkgs.libffi
  pkgs.libxml2
  pkgs.libxslt
]
[[[END_WRITE_FILE]]]

That’s the entire implementation.

It introduces no package installation or runtime dependency merely by existing. The file does not reference a particular site or checkout path, and existing flakes do not yet consume it.

The source is ready to apply, but I haven’t executed it on your machine. The AFTER receipt from your next compile will establish whether it parses and evaluates there.

Ignition: No ignition required. The probes import the function directly at call time.

There is one boundary for a later turn: an independent flake should consume this shared definition through an appropriately pinned source or another explicit distribution mechanism, not an absolute path to /home/mike/qamyai. Otherwise we would replace source duplication with checkout-location coupling.

4. PROMPT

(nix) qamyai $ β€” next prompt.md

# Jekyll Satellites: Prove the Shared Kernel

We have introduced one standalone Nix function:

assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix

It returns the ten common development packages shared
by Grimoire and Trimnoir.

No existing Jekyll flake was modified.
No Pipulate flake was modified.
No service was started.

The previous two site flakes parsed successfully after
removing inherited LD_LIBRARY_PATH and LD_PRELOAD.

TASK:

5. EXTERNAL DELIVERABLES

None. Grimoire, Trimnoir, Honeybot, the NixOS blog registry, and every publishing destination remain untouched.

This particular strike matters because it finally turns architectural analysis into a small source artifact without dragging in the rest of the architecture.

Ten package references. One pure function. Zero consumer changes.

The real proof comes from the next receipt, not the plausibility of the code. If it passes, you’ve banked the first reusable piece of the Jekyll satellite system without having to build the whole system around it.

MikeLev.in: It’s important to note that Trimnoir is the actual publicly published site and probably its realities are more important than Grimoire’s realities because that one is not published and as a local-only version I have way more freedom in changing it without risk.

I think a sub theme of this whole thing is that whatever we do for Grimoire also becomes the template for all non-published general-use local-only use like the prompt.md git diff visualization.

THE AI-EDIT METHOD

Same commands, run twice, one change between them. Where the readings differ is what the change did; the diff in the middle is the receipt.

Jekyll Satellites: Prove the Shared Kernel

We have introduced one standalone Nix function:

assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix

It returns the ten common development packages shared by Grimoire and Trimnoir.

No existing Jekyll flake was modified. No Pipulate flake was modified. No service was started.

The previous two site flakes parsed successfully after removing inherited LD_LIBRARY_PATH and LD_PRELOAD.

TASK:

Read the fresh live receipts.

Confirm whether the new common-packages.nix parses and evaluates against the ten-value mock pkgs argument.

Confirm both existing site flakes still parse.

If any verification failed, find the smallest cause. Do not proceed with consumer migration.

If verification passed, determine the smallest safe mechanism by which an independent Jekyll repository could consume this shared source from Pipulate.

Preserve the independence of each site’s Git repo.

Do not introduce a hard-coded dependency on the current Pipulate checkout path.

Consider Nix flake purity, lock-file pinning, and whether distributing the shared source requires a separate repository or can use Pipulate itself.

Prefer an existing Nix mechanism to a custom synchronization framework.

Do not modify Grimoire or Trimnoir yet. Do not change Gemfiles. Do not start Jekyll. Do not open network ports. Do not publish anything.

Prefer the smallest new verifiable artifact, or no patch if another bounded probe is necessary.

Keep the larger objective in view:

But do not implement the preview this turn.

5: DELIVERABLE:

Okay this feels right. I’ll probably turn it into an article much sooner rather than later so this doesn’t run too long this morning. I’m using my fresh morning energy to make a directional adjustment here that’s low-priority (not understood) by my day-job even though it’s actually quite critical for that for the git diffs of a prompt.md that I need to visualize as I work are for work, a really important aspect of my work where I need generic git diff visualization capability on anything I work on while I work extruding one of these articles but try explaining that ha ha!

So we dig-in in the morning, bank a few wins and get a directional inevitability rolling along that because it becomes part of the book-ore spine and to-do’s and such it’s… well, I said it. An inevitability.

Knock, knock, knock!

ChatGPT 6 High:

Jekyll satellites: the provider is proven; now prove a consumer

Context verified. The shared kernel has passed its first tests.

Your latest live receipts establish three things:

Test Result
common-packages.nix parses KERNEL_PARSE_OK
Mock evaluation returns all ten packages in order Passed
Grimoire and Trimnoir flakes still parse SITE_FLAKES_PARSE_OK

The transcript also records commit a61f93bc being pushed to github.com:pipulate/pipulate.git. The shared definition has therefore graduated from a proposed abstraction to a committed source artifact.

The next architectural decision is straightforward: a satellite should consume Pipulate as a pinned, non-flake source input.

Nix already supports this with flake = false. It lets an independent flake retrieve another repository’s source tree without evaluating that repository’s own flake outputs. Each consumer’s flake.lock can pin the exact provider revision, and the consumer supplies its own pkgs argument.

image

GitHub

+1

Pipulate GitHub repository

assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix

Non-flake source input, pinned independently by each consumer

Grimoire

Own flake.lock, Gemfile, hooks and site policy

Trimnoir

Own flake.lock, Gemfile, hooks and site policy

No new repository is required. No exported Pipulate flake API is required. And no satellite needs to know where the active Pipulate checkout lives.

I would not migrate either existing blog yet. The smallest next win is a standalone consumer fixture that proves the import contract without opening a port, building Jekyll, or changing any existing development shell.

The Nix documentation confirms the two pieces this approach relies on: non-flake source inputs and per-consumer lockfiles.

image

GitHub

+1

There is one useful distinction to preserve: the first fixture should prove the import using the local provider source. A separate later step will prove remote retrieval and commit its lockfile. That keeps this next test cheap and avoids confusing a network failure with an import-contract failure.

Five-car train

1. PROBES

The first command checks for the new fixture and parses it. The second evaluates its consumer contract with a local source override, avoiding a GitHub fetch and any package builds. The third makes sure the existing kernel remains valid.

The first two commands should report CONSUMER_FIXTURE_ABSENT before the patch. Afterward, successful evaluation should return the ten expected names.

(nix) qamyai $

if test -f assets/jekyll/consumer-fixture/flake.nix; then env -u LD_LIBRARY_PATH -u LD_PRELOAD nix-instantiate --parse assets/jekyll/consumer-fixture/flake.nix >/dev/null && printf 'CONSUMER_FIXTURE_PARSE_OK\n'; else printf 'CONSUMER_FIXTURE_ABSENT\n'; fi
if test -f assets/jekyll/consumer-fixture/flake.nix; then env -u LD_LIBRARY_PATH -u LD_PRELOAD nix eval --no-write-lock-file --override-input pipulate "path:$PWD" --json ./assets/jekyll/consumer-fixture#lib.jekyllKernelSmoke && printf '\nCONSUMER_LOCAL_IMPORT_OK\n'; else printf 'CONSUMER_FIXTURE_ABSENT\n'; fi
env -u LD_LIBRARY_PATH -u LD_PRELOAD nix-instantiate --parse assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix >/dev/null && printf 'PROVIDER_KERNEL_PARSE_OK\n'

This verifies the consumer interface, not remote pinning yet. The override is a test-only address; the fixture itself contains no dependency on the active checkout path.

The existing Grimoire and Trimnoir sources can come out of this particular context. We aren’t modifying or evaluating either site’s package list in this strike.

3. PATCHES

One new flake.nix, entirely separate from the production Pipulate flake and both existing site flakes.

(nix) qamyai $ β€” apply.py patch payload

Target: assets/jekyll/consumer-fixture/flake.nix
[[[WRITE_FILE]]]
{
  description = "Independent consumer fixture for Pipulate's Jekyll package kernel";

  inputs.pipulate = {
    url = "github:pipulate/pipulate";
    flake = false;
  };

  outputs = { self, pipulate }:
    let
      pkgs = {

        neovim = "neovim";
        git = "git";
        stdenv.cc.cc.lib = "cc-lib";
        pkg-config = "pkg-config";
        openssl = "openssl";
        zlib = "zlib";
        libffi = "libffi";
        libxml2 = "libxml2";
        libxslt = "libxslt";
      };

      actual = import (pipulate + "/assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix") {
        inherit pkgs;
      };

      expected = [
        "ruby"
        "neovim"
        "git"
        "cc-lib"
        "pkg-config"
        "openssl"
        "zlib"
        "libffi"
        "libxml2"
        "libxslt"
      ];
    in
    {
      lib.jekyllKernelSmoke = assert actual == expected; actual;
    };
}
[[[END_WRITE_FILE]]]

The fixture deliberately uses strings instead of packages. If it returns the correct list, we’ve proven that a separate flake can provide its own pkgs object to the shared source, without involving a Ruby installation or Jekyll server.

The github:pipulate/pipulate declaration establishes where an eventual independent consumer will retrieve the source. In this round, --override-input substitutes the local checkout so that only the import contract is tested.

No flake.lock is generated by the proposed probe. The later remote test should produce and commit a lockfile, then verify that it pins a specific Git revision and source hash before declaring distribution reproducible.

Ignition: No ignition required. The evaluation imports the new fixture directly. As with the previous strike, staging the newly created file makes it visible to Git-backed flake evaluation.

4. PROMPT

# Jekyll Satellites: Verify Independent Consumption

The provider is now committed in Pipulate:

assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix

It parses and evaluates correctly against ten mock
package attributes.

The previous turn introduced a standalone consumer
fixture at:

assets/jekyll/consumer-fixture/flake.nix

The fixture declares Pipulate as a non-flake GitHub
source input and imports the shared package kernel.

Its first test uses --override-input to supply the
local Pipulate checkout. This avoids network fetching
and does not generate a flake.lock.

TASK:

Read the fresh live receipts.

Confirm the fixture parses and that its evaluated
package list equals the expected ten elements.

Do not mistake a local override test for proof
of remote GitHub distribution or lockfile pinning.

If the local contract passes, identify the smallest
next step that tests the actual remote GitHub input
and records an independently pinned revision.

Consider whether a fixture-local flake.lock is
appropriate and what should be checked in it.

Do not modify Grimoire or Trimnoir.

Do not modify the main Pipulate flake.

Do not change Gemfiles or native Ruby dependencies.

Do not introduce listeners, server startup, firewall
rules, site registries, or publishing operations.

Prefer one narrowly scoped and reversible change.

The eventual goal is independently reproducible
Jekyll satellites and a private, always-available
prompt.md preview with colored universal diffs.

That preview remains out of scope this turn.

Keep the probe economy and exact before/after
symmetry. Close with the five-car train.

5. EXTERNAL DELIVERABLES

None. There are no changes to existing blogs, hosting, networking, deployment, or publishing.

This is a useful stopping point for the article, too. The engineering story now has a clear progression: duplicated environments, extracted common kernel, witnessed evaluation, and a small independent consumer contract.

The next chapter is the lockfile. The preview site can remain a destination on the map rather than an implementation burden today.

One provider. One test consumer. No existing behavior disturbed.

5: DELIVERABLE: Alright, this has been small and huge at the same time, and ChatGPT agrees it’s a good time to wrap this article.

Hop off the ride. This ride’s stated goal is reached – dismount. This is the NOTARY BEAT: the ride ends here, is witnessed here, and is sealed here. Answer all seven beats, briefly:

  1. TL;DR: a short, dry, neutral abstract for the TOP of the published article – written for an unfamiliar reader or AI summarizer who has never seen this system. No hype, no insider handles unexplained.
  2. VERIFY: restate the goal from the top of this article and confirm (or deny) it was met, citing THIS compile’s receipts, not memory. Name any ignition this ride required that never fired – an AFTER tap taken without one is a stale BEFORE wearing the AFTER’s label.
  3. BANK: name everything that graduates – rule, earmark, todo, pin – as SEARCH/REPLACE patch cars against raw source present in THIS context (Target line inside the fence, one car per commit story), deletions included. A β€˜paste-ready’ line with no Target and no SEARCH anchor is not banked; it is a hand edit the operator will not make. These BANK cars are the ONLY patches a dismount emits.
  4. DANGLING: what carries forward unbanked? One line each, no essays.
  5. SEED: the context.txt lines (and TODO_SLUGS if narrative context is needed) for the next ride’s first compile.
  6. CLOSING: a closing summary for the BOTTOM of the article – the final take-away, tied to the book’s larger arc where it fits naturally, never forced. Storytelling over inventory.
  7. NOTARIZE: read the exact Deed line from THIS compile’s final QA ARCHIVE SEAL footer, outside the payload, not a quoted older footer or a newest-file guess. It names the input archive, not this later response or the generated Jekyll post. State verification separately: only a verifier receipt naming that archive supports a verified claim; otherwise say not independently verified here. Count this Manifest’s live-command receipts, including failures. Quote only recorded digests, sizes and dates, naming their source; filesystem mtime and fixed ZIP dates are not command timestamps. Do not demand absent wc -c or dated-receipt fields. If the footer is missing, say so; otherwise close with its exact Deed line.

FINALITY: after beat 6, this discussion is CLOSED. Emit NO five-car train, NO probes, NO patches beyond the BANK cars of beat 2, and NO next-turn prompt beyond the SEED lines in beat 4. Any reader or model encountering this article later should treat it as a finished, notarized document – an archive entry, not an open thread.

ChatGPT 6 High:

1. VERIFY

The stated first-step goal was met. The larger hosting vision was not yet implemented.

This compile contains three live-command receipts, all successful:

Test This compile’s result
Consumer fixture syntax CONSUMER_FIXTURE_PARSE_OK
Consumer imports local provider CONSUMER_LOCAL_IMPORT_OK, returning the expected ten values
Provider kernel syntax PROVIDER_KERNEL_PARSE_OK

Pasted text.txt

The second test used --override-input pipulate "path:$PWD" and --no-write-lock-file. Its warnings confirm that no modified lockfile was written. This proves local consumption, not remote GitHub retrieval or revision pinning.

No runtime ignition was required or missed: the Nix commands loaded the files directly. No Jekyll service, shell hook, or existing blog was exercised by this compile.

2. BANK

Two artifacts have already graduated into source control: assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix and assets/jekyll/consumer-fixture/flake.nix. The operator’s included transcript records commit f80f8dca and its push, although that Git operation is not one of this compile’s three live receipts.

One remaining earmark deserves a source-level BANK car: a local override is not a remote dependency pin. Place that TODO beside the consumer input, where the next implementation will encounter it.

    url = "github:pipulate/pipulate";
[[[REPLACE]]]

This patch is proposed against the raw source in the current cartridge. It is not represented as already applied or tested.

No other changes need banking at dismount.

3. DANGLING

  • Remote GitHub source retrieval and independently pinned flake.lock: unverified.
  • Migration of Grimoire or Trimnoir to the shared kernel: not attempted.
  • Private, automatically refreshed prompt.md preview with colored diffs: not implemented.
  • Multi-site Honeybot hosting: not implemented.

4. SEED

The next ride needs only the provider and consumer source. No historical transcript or previous probe set is necessary.

(nix) qamyai $ β€” context.txt for the next ride

# JEKYLL SATELLITES: REMOTE SOURCE PINNING
assets/jekyll/common-packages.nix
assets/jekyll/consumer-fixture/flake.nix

5. CLOSING

The experiment began with two Jekyll websites carrying much of the same Nix configuration. Removing that duplication wholesale would have risked changing working systems.

Instead, we extracted the smallest shared part and proved that another Nix flake could consume it.

That distinction matters. Sharing the machinery does not require sharing a website’s identity, content, dependencies, or publishing decisions.

The broader lesson fits the article’s argument about plain text: small, readable files become durable building blocks when their contracts can be tested independently. We didn’t build the whole blogging system. We made one piece reusable, proved it, and left the existing sites alone.

That’s enough for this ride.

6. NOTARIZE

The Manifest records three live-command receipts: three successes, zero failures. The local consumer evaluation emitted warnings, but completed successfully.

The final QA Archive Seal footer is present and identifies the input archive. There is no independent verifier receipt naming that archive in this compile, so its integrity is not independently verified here. The deed below is the footer’s recorded identifier, not a new verification result.

Ai Editorial Take

The hidden dynamic here is the convergence of human cognitive ergonomics and machine readability around the exact same syntax: the YAML front-matter sandwich over Markdown. Human authors gravitate toward this structure because it balances structured metadata with frictionless prose in plain-text editors like Vim. Concurrently, frontier AI agents and standard protocols (AGENTS.md, SKILL.md, OKF) are settling on that exact structure because it provides clear semantic parsing boundaries for amnesiac models without proprietary container bloat. What looks like a nostalgic preference for 2008-era Jekyll blogging is actually an unrecognized architectural bridge: human writing ergonomics and autonomous agent intake have arrived at the identical protocol waist. By turning Pipulate into a provider of that shared text environment, the project is establishing a unified runtime where human note-taking and agent skills share identical execution physics.

All tech is ultimately plain text. Here is how to decouple duplicate Jekyll environments using a shared Nix package kernel and verifiable consumer fixtures.

Title Brainstorm

  • Title Option: Jekyll Satellites: Decoupling Shared Tooling from Independent Sites with Nix
    • Filename: jekyll-satellites-shared-nix-kernel.md
    • Rationale: Directly captures the core engineering achievement of extracting a ten-package Nix kernel to decouple tooling from site identity while preserving independent repositories.
  • Title Option: The Narrow Waist of Plain Text: Managing Satellite Jekyll Blogs with Nix
    • Filename: narrow-waist-plain-text-jekyll-nix.md
    • Rationale: Connects the philosophical thesis that all technology converges on plain text with the practical solution of a shared Nix development environment.
  • Title Option: Decoupling Development Machinery: Reusable Nix Environments for Independent Sites
    • Filename: decoupling-development-machinery-reusable-nix-environments.md
    • Rationale: Emphasizes the software architecture principle of separating shared package maintenance from individual project ownership and configuration.
  • Title Option: From Flake Duplication to Reusable Kernel: The Jekyll Satellite Blueprint
    • Filename: from-flake-duplication-to-reusable-jekyll-kernel.md
    • Rationale: Frames the incremental progression from redundant flakes to an isolated, verifiable consumer fixture as an actionable architectural pattern.

Content Potential And Polish

  • Core Strengths:
    • Compelling philosophical narrative linking lifelong Vim habits to modern AI interface standards (AGENTS.md, SKILL.md, Google OKF).
    • Disciplined 80/20 methodology that resists premature optimization, stopping at a pure ten-package kernel rather than over-engineering a full publishing system.
    • Rigorous before-and-after verification protocol where environment library collisions are diagnosed and resolved cleanly before modifying source code.
    • Clear architectural separation of concerns between shared development machinery, site identity/content, and host network exposure.
  • Suggestions For Polish:
    • Front-load the core architectural dilemma earlier in the text so readers quickly see how the Vim philosophy connects to multi-site Jekyll maintenance.
    • Clarify the distinction between testing a local checkout override and testing a cryptographically locked remote flake input before moving to production.
    • Streamline the raw terminal command dumps in the middle section to highlight the critical diagnostic receipts without overwhelming reader attention.

Next Step Prompts

  • Write an automated test script and probe suite to verify remote GitHub source fetching for assets/jekyll/consumer-fixture/flake.nix, capturing and committing its locked revision and narHash into flake.lock.
  • Design a minimal, localhost-bound Jekyll live preview pipeline in Pipulate that renders prompt.md with Prism.js diff syntax highlighting upon every context compile.
