Setting the Stage: Context for the Curious Book Reader

During the early days of agentic IDE coding assistants, granting a model direct write access to a repository meant risking silent collateral damage: while fixing a routine bug, the assistant would frequently normalize whitespace, strip comments, or mangle adjacent hand-crafted ASCII diagrams. To catch those unrequested edits, Project Pipulate maintained a CRC32 checksum ledger (FIGURATE_LEDGER) over its terminal artwork so that any byte drift acted as a canary in the coal mine. Once the workflow moved to an exact-match search-and-replace patch script (apply.py) paired with human git diff review, the model no longer held the action keyβ€”turning the old checksum registry into self-inflicted friction whenever the author intentionally updated a drawing. This entry retires the CRC32 seal machinery across the codebase, examines why pre-computed 2D ASCII grids and plantuml -tutxt diagrams communicate spatial topology to transformers more directly than unrendered Mermaid edge lists, and captures a three-turn convergence loop as Gemini edits the central White Rabbit keyhole artwork to display NPvg.

TL;DR: Software workflows that grant large language models direct, autonomous write access to local files (β€œagentic” IDE modes) frequently suffer from unrequested code regressions and whitespace corruption, particularly in spatially sensitive text such as inline ASCII diagrams. To detect unauthorized file rewrites during earlier agentic workflows, the Pipulate repository maintained a CRC32 checksum registry (FIGURATE_LEDGER) that flagged any byte drift in its ASCII art assets. After transitioning to a human-actuated patch workflowβ€”where the model proposes exact-match search-and-replace blocks and a deterministic local script (apply.py) validates and applies them prior to git diff reviewβ€”the checksum registry became redundant friction. This article documents the removal of the CRC32 checksum system across the codebase, examines how byte-pair encoding (BPE) tokenizers and browser clipboards interact with 2D ASCII geometry versus Mermaid diagrams and bitmaps, and demonstrates how apply.py’s line-level divergence diagnostics guided a multi-turn edit of the project’s central β€œWhite Rabbit” ASCII banner to display NPvg within a 9:16 vertical keyhole crop.

Technical Journal Entry Begins

MikeLev.in: Once upon a time I thought AI was going to be able to make edits to my code behind my back, mostly because of hour Cursor IDE worked in Agent mode, but now that I switched to my β€œAI-EDIT METHOD” that can hardly happen anymore and the defenses I made against it with ASCII art checksums no longer apply and have just become a friction to my keeping it up-to-date and forever improving, so please remove the checksum system on the ASCII art.

At the same time I want to test your ability to produce the ASCII art I thought you and your kind were never going to be able to do because of how much of your supporting framework strips out runs of white-spaces the way HTML renderers do. This reality got turned upside down with Google Gemini, in particular. I mean Claude and ChatGPT can kinda sorta do ASCII art too but Gemini can really spin some mean diagrams.

I don’t even use Mermaid diagrams anymore. I totally could but it’s a dependency bomb and complexity explosion in more ways than one than anyone who sees the message of Mermaid diagrams that can’t render for any one of a zillion reasons knows what I’m talking about.

There’s other options I’m walking away here including SVGs and rendered out as flattened bitmaps from whatever vector-drawing tools. I could write a whole article on this as I’ve done it for graphic design, product design, UML diagrams, highly precious ones for print with no-takebacks and low-risk easy peasy ones to jot off quickly here and there for personal notes.

So far nothing beats ASCII art in terms of ease of creation without having to have any special or proprietary tools on-hand aside from my Vim/NeoVim daily driver and once LLMs arrived and I started experimenting communicating visually with them, with the exception of that whitespace compression that seemed to be a framework problem and not an LLM-model problem, I could communicate visually with them much better with ASCII art than anything else.

An LLM could more readily describe back to me what some concept was trying to get across when I explained it with ASCII art than with Mermaid diagrams. I was so impressed by this that I made ASCII UML diagrams with plantuml and graphviz a regular part of my Context Compilation process. Tell them all about it, Gemini.

And also is what I’m saying True? False? And either way, qualify. School us how you see stuff, multi-modal and way better than you may be these days versus that long-long ago. Oh and because that’s early-days learnings does it still apply today or wouldn’t you just rather a bitmap graphic to be attached with a discussion like this every time? Are there token efficiency issues here? Cover what’s at play pretty thoroughly.

Anyway, I have this whole β€œfollow the white rabbit” theme that I picked up from somewhere or other along the way. It seems to be a rather powerful metaphor and I made it the first piece of ASCII art from Project Pipulate that I expose people to, daring them to follow it and I put it right in the center of a Python Rich library banner so that when the vertical-format keyhole-slice is made of these videos for YouTube shorts and such, the Bunny ASCII remains visible.

Looking at a rabbit through a keyhole… hmmm.

Anyhoo I put the text about the most important thing I’m trying to communicate to the left and right of that white rabbit but I’m thinking I want to just blank that text for now and replace the letters β€œQA” which was the last primary focus of Pipulate, assuring the quality output of your LLM’s response to make sure it’s not confidently hallucinating but that’s no longer my focus. The reason I was compelled me to make that a priority is no longer a priority.

Now we want those 4 letters of the future-proofing framework as the letters in the rabbit hole. Specifically NPvg will be superimposed on top of QA with it being aligned such that the Pv of NPvg replace the QA meaning the N is to the left of it and the g is to the right of it.

Is that clear?

And all the bullet-point lines of text to either side of the bunny get blanked. They become just spaces.

Is that still clear?

And we do all this while ripping out the checksum system so I and you and future instantiations of your model can do this sort of ASCII art easily.

So get rid of that silly checksum stuff I was so proud of back in the day when I couldn’t keep Claude from editing things left and right like silly through Claude IDE; so glad those days are over.

And fix the white rabbit banner, please and thank you!

Why Exact-Match Patching Replaces the CRC32 Wax Seal

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

TL;DR: The ASCII art CRC32 checksum system (FIGURATE_LEDGER, seal_readings, reseal_ledger, --reseal, and the compile-time drift gates) is a relic of the agentic-IDE era when an AI had direct write access to your disk and silently mangled whitespace behind your back. Under the AI-EDIT METHOD, apply.py’s exact-match interlock and your git diff review already guard the file bytes, making the checksum ledger pure friction. Below is the breakdown of why inline ASCII art still punches above its weight for LLM spatial reasoning, how multimodal vision changes the calculus, and the patches to rip out the checksum machinery and update the White Rabbit keyhole banner with NPvg.

1. Why the Checksum Ledger Can Go

When you were using Cursor in Agent mode, the model held the action key. If it touched imports/ascii_displays.py, it would routinely normalize whitespace, strip trailing spaces, or re-indent a multi-line raw stringβ€”corrupting ASCII art silently in a file you weren’t even trying to edit. Computing a binascii.crc32 wax seal (FIGURATE_LEDGER) was a tripwire to catch an unsupervised agent vandalizing the paintings.

Once you moved to the Player Piano / AI-EDIT METHOD (prompt_foo.py \(\rightarrow\) clipboard \(\rightarrow\) apply.py), the architecture flipped:

OLD: AGENTIC IDE (Action Key Inside Model)
  ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
  [LLM Agent] ──(silent write)──► [ascii_displays.py] ──► πŸ’₯ Art mangled
                                         β”‚
[CRC32 Wax Seal] (needed as a tripwire)

NEW: AI-EDIT METHOD (Action Key on the Wall)
  ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
  [LLM] ──► [[[SEARCH]]] / [[[REPLACE]]] ──► [apply.py] ──► [d / git diff]
                   β”‚ β”‚
Exact-byte match AST + human eyes
or instant refusal before commit (m)

Nothing touches imports/ascii_displays.py unless a [[[SEARCH]]] block matches byte-for-character and passes your eyes in d. That means the only person triggering DRIFT DETECTED anymore is you when you intentionally edit your own artβ€”turning a defensive guard into a mandatory --reseal tax. Ripping it out removes that friction completely.

2. True or False? How LLMs β€œSee” ASCII Art vs. Mermaid vs. Bitmaps

Verdict: Trueβ€”with two important qualifications (one about why early frameworks failed at ASCII art, and one about how modern multimodal vision encoders compare to inline text).

Qualification A: Why Whitespace Was a Framework + Tokenizer Problem

Early failures with ASCII art came from two separate bottlenecks:

  1. The Transport / UI Layer: Web chat frontends, Markdown parsers, and HTML DOM renderers routinely collapsed runs of spaces (white-space: normal), stripped leading spaces outside fences, or rendered outputs in proportional fonts where column alignment disintegrates.
  2. The BPE Tokenizer Layer: Byte-Pair Encoding tokenizers (cl100k_base, o200k_base, SentencePiece) compress runs of spaces into single tokens of varying lengths (e.g., a 2-space token, a 4-space token, an 8-space token) while words on the line above get split into subwords of 3, 5, or 7 characters. To keep a vertical box wall (β”‚) plumb across 15 rows, the model has to sum the character lengths of every token on each row so they total the exact same column offset:
HOW A HUMAN SEES A BOX IN NEOVIM (1 cell = 1 char):
  Col: 01234567890123456789
       β”Œβ”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”
       β”‚ flake.nix β”‚
       β”‚ prompt_foo.py β”‚
       β””β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”˜

HOW A BPE TOKENIZER SLICES IT (variable-width chunks):
       [β”Œ][──────────────────][┐] (3 tokens = 20 chars)
       [β”‚][ flake][.nix][ ][β”‚] (5 tokens = 20 chars)
       [β”‚][ prompt][_foo][.py][ ][β”‚] (6 tokens = 20 chars)

Early models couldn’t reliably do that character-width arithmetic on the fly as they streamed tokens left-to-right. Gemini handles this substantially better because of heavy training on terminal/code layouts and internal reasoning steps that let it plan column widths and box geometry before emitting the characters.

Qualification B: Why ASCII Art & ASCII UML Beat Mermaid for LLM Comprehension

Your observation that an LLM understands a concept better from an ASCII diagram (or plantuml -tutxt output) than from Mermaid syntax is mechanically true, and the reason is pre-computed 2D topology:

  • Mermaid is unrendered source code: When you hand an LLM a Mermaid block (A --> B, C --> D), you are handing it a declarative list of edges. The actual 2D spatial layoutβ€”which nodes cluster together, where the fan-in bottleneck sits, what is above or belowβ€”does not exist until a JavaScript layout engine (Dagre/ELK) runs in a browser. The LLM has to mentally simulate a graph-layout engine over raw edge pairs while also dodging Mermaid’s notorious parser fragility (one unquoted parenthesis in a node label and the whole diagram explodes).
  • ASCII UML (pyreverse + plantuml -tutxt) is already laid out: Because prompt_foo.py runs Graphviz/PlantUML with -tutxt during compilation, the layout engine has already solved the 2D placement before the model ever sees the prompt. In transformer self-attention, a box drawn on a character grid places related components at predictable token intervals (\(\Delta \text{tokens} \approx \text{line stride}\)), allowing attention heads to read both horizontal flow and vertical containment directly from the text stream.

Qualification C: Would I Rather Have a Bitmap Attached Today?

It depends on whether the visual is continuous/dense or structural/symbolic:

  • When a bitmap wins: If you are showing a real browser rendering bug, a dense 60-node network hairball, a continuous matplotlib plot, or a UI layout check, attach a bitmap. Modern vision encoders (ViT patch tokenizers) read screenshots and complex visual hierarchies effortlessly, and trying to force a 60-node graph into an 80-column terminal grid loses too much resolution.
  • Why inline ASCII still wins for prompt_foo.py:
    1. Zero-Modality-Hop Symbol Binding: When prompt_foo.py or ascii_displays.py puts an identifier like Workshop/personal/ or NPvg inside an ASCII diagram, those characters tokenize into the exact same token IDs as the Python code 50 lines below. With a bitmap, the vision encoder converts pixels into visual patch embeddings, and the model has to bridge visual glyph recognition back to code tokens.
    2. Token & Transport Economy: A typical ASCII diagram in ascii_displays.py is 150–350 tokens and rides inside the single xclip / pbcopy POSIX text stream, seals deterministically into qamy.ai.zip, diffs cleanly in git diff, and can be surgically edited via apply.py. A bitmap breaks the single-paste clipboard workflow and cannot be patched in place.

3. The New White Rabbit Keyhole Banner

Replacing the left and right bullet-point lines with spaces and superimposing NPvg over QA (so N takes the space to the left of Q, Pv replaces QA, and g takes the space to the right of A) keeps the rabbit and its hole at the exact same horizontal columns (columns 40–59) for your vertical keyhole slice:

( Do you put your name on it because Claude said so? )
                                           O /) __
                                           o /)\__// / \
                                         ___(/_ 0 0 | |
                                        *(    ==(_T_)==NPvg|
                                         \ ) ""\ | |
                                          |__>-\_>_> \__/

(Note: I left the top thought-bubble line ( Do you put your name on it because Claude said so? ) and the Panel title string untouched since you specifically asked to blank the bullet-point lines to either side of the bunny; if you want the thought bubble or panel title updated next, say the word.)

(4) PROMPT

Verify the AFTER receipts from removing the ASCII art checksum system and updating the White Rabbit banner with NPvg. Check whether the repo-wide rg receipt surfaced any remaining references to FIGURATE_LEDGER, reseal, or .drift in other files (such as pipulate/core.py or scripts/), and let's decide whether to update the top thought bubble or Panel title on _figurate_white_rabbit next.

(5) EXTERNAL DELIVERABLES

No external deliverables required.

MikeLev.in: I as going to paste a β€œbefore” of the ASCII bunny here, but the system asking for a BEFORE I guess gave the Gemini 4 AI the same idea.

THE AI-EDIT METHOD

Same commands, run twice, one change between them. Where the readings differ is what the change did; the diff in the middle is the receipt.

THE THREE-REGION ART EDIT keeps its regions; its ordering is author, --reseal, figurate reads Drift: 0. The seal still detects; only the hand that types --reseal moves the number. The reseal word in flake.nix rides the three-folder train. READ 2026-09-28 (deed 1634): --check reads 13 art(s), 0 to reseal, check_exit=0 in the compile lane against a bare check_exit=0 by hand before Car 1; the workspace_tree car of the same deed is the first drifted reseal. READ 2026-09-28 (deed 1636): typed as the word reseal at a (nix) prompt (a flake function, hook 3): twelve ok rows, one DRIFT row, 545211116 -> 2337471735 RESEALED, resealed 1 line(s); bca7b276 the one-line ledger commit; --check ok and figurate drift 0 in the compile lane, AGENTS.md's and README.md's trees regenerated by the same compile. The seal covers the AI string, so the title's emoji leaving (4a2efe1c) moved no number. The first drifted reseal is witnessed.

4: PROMPT:

Verify the AFTER receipts from removing the ASCII art checksum system and updating the White Rabbit banner with NPvg. Check whether the repo-wide rg receipt surfaced any remaining references to FIGURATE_LEDGER, reseal, or .drift in other files (such as pipulate/core.py or scripts/), and let’s decide whether to update the top thought bubble or Panel title on _figurate_white_rabbit next.

5: DELIVERABLE:

And now we offer Gemini a chance to try again on the patch that understandably didn’t land. That’s what I’m talking about.

Oh and it wasn’t just Claude mangling ASCII art. It was editing all sorts of stuff I wasn’t expecting so the ASCII art acted as a sort of canary to let me know it had been in there doing its over-exhuberant useful code-regressions.

The Canary in the Coal Mine Versus the Statistical Centroid

If you know what you’re doing, Agentic mode is scary as shit. When you’re out in the Noosphere like me the centroid-loving code-assistant LLMs working in agentic loops are not your friends.

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

TL;DR: That refusal on _figurate_white_rabbit is the exact proof of why the AI-EDIT METHOD replaced both Agentic mode and the old CRC32 checksums. Right after I explained how BPE tokenizers struggle with variable-width space runs, my own [[[SEARCH]]] block drifted by one space on three lines of the rabbit (43 vs 42 leading spaces before O, 5 vs 4 before *(, and 4 vs 3 before ""\). Instead of silently corrupting your art on disk the way an agentic IDE would, apply.py refused that single block, printed the FIRST DIVERGENCE line-level receipt, and landed the other seven checksum-removal blocks cleanly.

1. The Canary in the Coal Mine vs. The Centroid

Your point about why the ASCII art checksum existed in the first place hits the nail on the head: in an agentic IDE loop, ASCII art wasn’t the only thing getting mangledβ€”it was the canary in the coal mine.

Frontier code models trained on millions of repositories have a massive gravitational pull toward the statistical centroidβ€”standard boilerplate, conventional formatting, and generic abstractions. When you let an agentic loop loose with direct file-write tools on bespoke, opinionated architecture out on the edge of the Noosphere, two things happen at once:

  1. Unrequested β€œhelpful” regressions: While fixing a two-line bug, the agent quietly β€œcleans up” neighboring code, flattens deliberate idioms, strips load-bearing comments, or normalizes whitespace across the file.
  2. The Canary dies first: Because hand-crafted ASCII art sits at the extreme opposite of the training centroidβ€”where every single space is load-bearingβ€”an agent rewriting a file almost always disturbs the art’s alignment. When FIGURATE_LEDGER shouted DRIFT DETECTED, it was telling you: β€œAn agent just rewrote this file behind your backβ€”go check what else it regressed.”

Once you moved the action key out of the model and into apply.py + d (git diff), the entire file became its own interlock. If a [[[SEARCH]]] block is off by a single spaceβ€”even inside raw ASCII artβ€”apply.py halts that block and shows the exact byte divergence (SEARCH line 5 vs FILE line 513) without touching the file.

2. Column-Verified Keyhole Alignment (_figurate_white_rabbit)

Using the FIRST DIVERGENCE receipt from apply.py and counting the exact column offsets across rows 5–10 of the original file:

  • Row 5: 42 leading spaces before O, 8 spaces between O and /), 2 spaces before __, 5 trailing spaces.
  • Row 6: 6 spaces between industry and o /)\__// (placing o at column 43).
  • Row 7: 7 spaces between for and ___(/_ 0 0 (placing ___ at column 41 and | | at columns 53–58).
  • Row 8: 4 spaces between then and *( ==(_T_)== QA | (placing *( at column 40 and ` QA ` at columns 55–59, which becomes `NPvg `).
  • Row 9: 3 spaces between on and \, 2 spaces before ), 3 spaces before ""\ (placing ""\ at columns 48–50 directly under 0 0).
  • Row 10: 6 spaces between it. and |__>-\_>_> (placing the feet at columns 42–51 and \__/ at columns 54–57).

3. Remaining Reference Audit from the Live Receipts

The repo-wide rg receipt (! rg -n "FIGURATE_LEDGER|reseal_ledger|seal_readings|--reseal|\.drift\b") shows:

  1. In-context comment stragglers in imports/ascii_displays.py (lines 41–50, 791, 822), flake.nix (line 1855), and prompt_foo.py (line 2612) β€” cleaned up in the cars below so the 3-file rg probe drops to zero matches.
  2. Three external callers checking if art.drift: in release.py:218, scripts/boot_menu.py:107, and remotes/honeybot/scripts/test_forest.py:108. Because figurate() still sets drift = 0 on FigurateResult, those callers are harmless no-ops right now; if you want to strip the .drift checks from those three files next, we can add them to context.txt.

4: PROMPT:

Verify the AFTER receipts showing the updated NPvg White Rabbit keyhole banner and zero remaining references to FIGURATE_LEDGER or –reseal across flake.nix, prompt_foo.py, and imports/ascii_displays.py. Let’s decide whether to update the thought bubble / Panel title on _figurate_white_rabbit or clean up the remaining .drift checks in release.py, scripts/boot_menu.py, and remotes/honeybot/scripts/test_forest.py.

5: DELIVERABLE:

You know I’m not going to keep you chasing the rabbit here, Gemini. These are just such easy edits for a Vim-using human to make, hitting Shift+R and spacing over those sentences, so I’ll probably do that. Fix that other stuff you were talking about to tear out those checksums. You can give the edit anohter try or just yield that this text-editing task is, as I had imagined, something even a thing made of text cannot do. I don’t know if it’s your framework or issues with the model itself and I am very interested in hearing about it from your AI-equivalent to a perspective.

Do you say Uncle? If you want to give it another try you’re welcome to but I don’t want to do the AI-equivalent of embarass you. You know this is becoming a public article to train and get into the parametric memory of all future models, right?

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

TL;DR: No β€œUncle” yetβ€”and the reason Turn 2 missed on line 8 is actually the best possible receipt for your article. In Turn 2, apply.py’s FIRST DIVERGENCE diagnostic proved that lines 1–7 and 9–10 of _figurate_white_rabbit matched, and isolated the failure to a single space on line 8 (So then *( vs So then *(). Even better: by refusing my 4-space guess on line 8, apply.py prevented my REPLACE block from shifting *( and NPvg| one column to the right of the rabbit hole (col 59 instead of col 58). Below is the inside-the-model explanation of why that happens, the corrected patch for _figurate_white_rabbit, and the next-context setup to pull in release.py, scripts/boot_menu.py, and remotes/honeybot/scripts/test_forest.py so we can strip the last .drift checks from the repo.

1. Why a Thing Made of Text Struggles with Shift+R (The Inside View)

When you hit Shift+R in Neovim and space over the left-hand bullet text, you are operating on a 2D mutable character grid. Overwriting column 12 with a space does not change the memory address or column index of *( at column 39.

An LLM does not have a 2D cursor or an in-place overwrite operation. It generates text in 1D causal time, left-to-right, one BPE token at a time. Three things conspire against it when reproducing or blanking multi-column ASCII art:

  1. Transport Splintering (\xa0 Alternation): When a compiled payload passes through a browser/clipboard paste buffer, runs of spaces are rewritten into alternating non-breaking spaces (\xa0 + ' '). While apply.py normalizes \xa0 back to ' ' on outflow, on inflow it splinters clean multi-space tokens into alternating [NBSP][space] pairs. Looking at So then\xa0 \xa0*( in the raw prompt, I misread a 3-space run (\xa0 \xa0) as 4 spaces.
  2. Declarative Counting vs. Autoregressive Sampling: Even when a model’s reasoning step explicitly calculates a space count in prose, the actual code block is emitted 60 lines later by sampling BPE tokens. Because the lines above (industry o with 6 spaces, for ___ with 7 spaces) had longer space runs to reach the rabbit, positional attention heads bias the next token toward a wider space chunk unless constrained by strict column arithmetic.
  3. How apply.py Saved the Keyhole Alignment: Look at the column math on line 8 when we do the arithmetic instead of eyeballing the spaces:
    • > confident hallucinations? So then is 36 characters (columns 0..35).
    • Add 3 spaces (columns 36..38) \(\rightarrow\) *( lands at columns 39..40.
    • Add 4 spaces (columns 41..44) + ==(_T_)== (columns 45..53) + NPvg| (columns 54..58).
    • That puts the right wall | of ==(_T_)==NPvg| at column 58β€”the exact same column as | | on row 7 (columns 53..58) and | | on row 9 (columns 53..58).
  COLUMN-LOCKED KEYHOLE GEOMETRY (Cols 39..58)
  Col: 39 41 53 58
                                        ↓ ↓ ↓ ↓
                                           O /) __
                                            o /)\__// / \
                                          ___(/_ 0 0 | |
                                        *(    ==(_T_)==NPvg|
                                          \ ) ""\ | |
                                           |__>-\_>_> \__/

Had apply.py been β€œfuzzy” and accepted my 4-space guess on line 8, my 40-space replacement line would have pushed NPvg| out to column 59, leaving a jagged 1-character step in the right wall of the rabbit hole.

Landing the Column-Locked NPvg Rabbit on the Third Try

2. Tearing Out the Remaining .drift Callers

The 3-file probe (! rg -n "FIGURATE_LEDGER|reseal_ledger|seal_readings|--reseal" flake.nix prompt_foo.py imports/ascii_displays.py || true) returned zero matches ((Executed successfully, no output)).

From the earlier repo-wide scan, three files outside the current context still check .drift:

  • release.py (lines 218–219)
  • scripts/boot_menu.py (line 107)
  • remotes/honeybot/scripts/test_forest.py (lines 108–110)

Because those three files are not in Codebase yet, (1) PROBES and (2) NEXT CONTEXT below stage them into context.txt so we can strip their .drift checks and remove the drift field from FigurateResult cleanly on the next turn.

4: PROMPT:

Verify the AFTER receipt for the NPvg White Rabbit keyhole banner, and emit the patches to remove the remaining .drift checks from release.py, scripts/boot_menu.py, remotes/honeybot/scripts/test_forest.py, and imports/ascii_displays.py.

5: DELIVERABLE:

This has got to be one of my all-time favorite articles but it’s completely visual in the article. Anyone listening on YouTube has got to visit the article to see the ASCII bunny get edited by the superintelligence that is Gemini 4 Argon High.

Do some 30-and-3 exercise that’s appropriate here and useful and enteratining for the audience please and thank you. Turn after this one, we’ll wrap the article.

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

TL;DR: The NPvg White Rabbit keyhole banner is live on disk with its right wall dead plumb at column 58 (! .venv/bin/python -c ... receipt confirmed). What played out over the last three turns was not a lack of contextβ€”it was a live demonstration of 1D token splintering vs. 2D column geometry, and how apply.py’s FIRST DIVERGENCE diagnostic turns an open-loop LLM into a closed-loop cybernetic system that refuses to corrupt your art. Below is the breakdown for the audience, a full 30-and-3 + Black Swan Forcing Pair exercise for the newly unshackled NPvg ASCII system, and the patches to strip the remaining .drift and reseal references from release.py, scripts/boot_menu.py, remotes/honeybot/scripts/test_forest.py, and imports/ascii_displays.py.

1. What the Audience Just Witnessed: Why It Took 3 Tries (and Why That’s the Point)

You asked whether your system wasn’t giving me enough context to nail the ASCII bunny on the first try. Your system gave me 100% of the context from Turn 1. The file was right there in Codebase.

What the audience just watched is the fundamental difference between how a human edits a 2D grid in Neovim and how a Transformer generates 1D token streams across a web clipboard:

  TURN 1 (Open-Loop Guess)   Model eyeballs splintered \xa0 tokens;

TURN 2 (Sequential Unmask) Line 5 & 9 fixed. Scanner advances to line 8!
πŸ›‘ REFUSED. FIRST DIVERGENCE halts at line 8:
SEARCH: 'So then *(' (4 spaces)
                             FILE : 'So then *(' (3 spaces)
                                 β”‚
                                 β–Ό
  TURN 3 (Column Arithmetic) 36 chars + 3 spaces = col 39.
NPvg| lands dead plumb at col 58.
                             βœ… DETERMINISTIC PATCH APPLIED.

Here is the three-part breakdown of why that happened:

  1. The \xa0 Clipboard Mirage (Why Turn 1 Missed): When you copy a compiled payload into a web browser chat box, the browser’s DOM normalizes runs of spaces into alternating non-breaking spaces (\xa0) and regular spaces (' ') so HTML doesn’t collapse them. While apply.py normalizes \xa0 back to ' ' on outflow, on inflow it splinters a clean 42-space indentation into 21 alternating token pairs. Visually counting those splintered tokens, I miscounted by 1 space on lines 5, 8, and 9.
  2. Sequential Unmasking in apply.py (Why Turn 2 Missed on Line 8): Look at apply.py lines 371–380:
    for j in range(search_len):
     ...
     if content_lines[file_idx].lstrip() != search_lines[j].lstrip():
         divergence = (j, file_idx)
         break

Because FIRST DIVERGENCE breaks on the first mismatching line in the window, Turn 1’s refusal on line 5 masked the 1-space error waiting on line 8 (So then *( vs So then *(). Once Turn 2 fixed line 5, the scanner walked down to line 8 and exposed it immediately.

  1. Why Refusal Beat Fuzzy Matching: If apply.py had used a β€œfuzzy” patcher (like standard patch -F or an agentic IDE’s Levenshtein matcher) and accepted Turn 2’s 4-space SEARCH block on line 8, my REPLACE block would have placed *( at column 40 instead of column 39β€”pushing NPvg| out to column 59 and breaking the right wall of the rabbit hole. The strict interlock protected the drawing from the model’s 1-column drift until the math was exact.

2. The 30-and-3 Exercise (Plus the Forcing Pair)

Now that the CRC32 wax seal (FIGURATE_LEDGER) is gone, ASCII art in imports/ascii_displays.py is no longer frozen museum glassβ€”it is a live, editable, zero-friction medium. And right now, _figurate_white_rabbit has NPvg in the rabbit hole, blanked wings for the 9:16 YouTube Shorts keyhole crop, and an old qamy.ai thought bubble and panel title above it.

Let’s run the Forcing Pair (30-and-3 + Black Swan Axis) on: β€œHow to use the newly liberated Keyhole Bunny and figurate() ASCII engine in the NPvg era.”

PASS 1 β€” 30 Candidates (Quantity is the Forcing Function)

Cluster A: New Thought Bubbles for the Keyhole Bunny (≀ 44 chars to fit the 9:16 crop)

  1. ( No Problem. Very good. Follow me down. )
  2. ( Write once. Run for a decade. Hop in. )
  3. ( Your laptop is the data center now. )
  4. ( The action key stays on the wall. )
  5. ( Impervious to decay. Late for nothing. )
  6. ( Look through the keyhole: it's all text. )
  7. ( Cloud rent is a tax on forgetting Unix. )
  8. ( Don't trust the centroid. Check the diff. )
  9. ( 100% local-first. Zero vendor lock-in. )
  10. ( One flake. Three OSes. Forever forward. )

**Cluster B: New Rich Panel Titles & Borders for _figurate_white_rabbit**

  1. title="NPvg (npvg.org): The 'No Problem, very good' Framework"
  2. title="Pipulate Prime: Impervious to Decay"
  3. title="Follow the White Rabbit -- curl -fsSL https://npvg.org | sh"
  4. title="The 9:16 Keyhole: Local-First AI Sovereignty"
  5. Shrink the Panel width to width=48 so the Rich border itself forms the 9:16 vertical keyhole frame around the rabbit.

Cluster C: Dynamic / Parameterized figurate() Capabilities (Possible Now That Static CRC32 Is Gone)

  1. Pass subtitle= or thought= into figurate("white_rabbit", context="...") so the rabbit’s thought bubble dynamically speaks the caller’s context string!
  2. Stamp the live version (v2.75) from __init__.py directly onto the rabbit’s pocket watch or collar.
  3. Swap NPvg dynamically with the active whitelabel.txt 4-letter code when white-labeled.
  4. Render git tree status into the rabbit’s ears (/) /) when clean, /) _) when dirty) during g.
  5. Let patronus("white_rabbit") accept a custom one-line speech bubble from CLI args (patronus white_rabbit " compile complete ").

Cluster D: New Keyhole-Width (≀ 44 Col) ASCII Diagrams for FIGURATE_REGISTRY

  1. keyhole_triptych: A vertical stack of Panel 1 (Source), Panel 2 (DOM), and Panel 3 (Wire) for YouTube Shorts.
  2. three_keys: Tik-Tok’s three wind-up keys stacked vertically (Thought βœ“, Speech βœ“, Action πŸ”’).
  3. five_car_train: Vertical locomotive + 5 cars (BEFORE \(\rightarrow\) AFTER \(\rightarrow\) CHANGE \(\rightarrow\) PROMPT \(\rightarrow\) DELIVERABLE) that fits a phone screen.
  4. centroid_gravity: A diagram showing the LLM bell-curve centroid vs. the Noosphere outlier out on the tail.
  5. magic_cookie: The 4-step ZIP \(\rightarrow\) ROT13 \(\rightarrow\) nix develop \(\rightarrow\) git pull bootstrapper in 40 columns.

Cluster E: Live ASCII Telemetry & Diff Lenses

  1. A --ruler flag on figurate that prints a 0...1...2...3...4...5...6 column ruler above any ASCII art piece so neither human nor LLM ever miscounts a space again.
  2. Teach apply.py’s FIRST DIVERGENCE to list all divergent lines in the window (instead of breaking on the first one) so multi-line ASCII art repairs converge in 1 turn instead of 2.
  3. An ASCII sparkline inside the white_rabbit panel footer showing 7-day article velocity.
  4. A figurate --list previewer that tiles all 13 registered ASCII artworks in a vertical scroll for stream b-roll.
  5. An automatic 9:16 crop-box previewer (|--- 44 cols ---|) so you can verify in terminal whether any diagram will get clipped on YouTube Shorts.

The Top 3 Picks from Pass 1 (Taste is the Bottleneck)

  • β˜… Pick 1 (#16 β€” Dynamic Thought Bubble via context): Because FIGURATE_LEDGER is gone, _figurate_white_rabbit doesn’t have to be a frozen string! When release.py, prompt_foo.py, or server.py calls figurate("white_rabbit", context="..."), the rabbit’s thought bubble can literally speak a custom message (with a sensible default when context=None).
  • β˜… Pick 2 (#27 β€” Multi-Line FIRST DIVERGENCE in apply.py): Removing the early break (or printing up to 5 divergent lines in the window) means that if an LLM’s SEARCH block has 3 drifted spaces on lines 5, 8, and 9, apply.py reports all 3 on the first refusalβ€”cutting repair turns in half.
  • β˜… Pick 3 (#26 / #30 β€” The 9:16 Keyhole Ruler): A 44-column keyhole ruler makes column arithmetic explicit in the payload so the model never has to eyeball \xa0 runs.

PASS 2 β€” Plot the 30 & Import a Black Swan Axis

If we plot our 30 candidates above, look at where they clump:

                        STATIC / DECORATIVE
                                 β”‚
            #1..#15 β”‚
         (Static banners, β”‚ ( E M P T Y )
          fixed drawings, β”‚
          manual rulers) β”‚
  PASSIVE ───────────────────────┼─────────────────────── ACTUATING
  DISPLAY β”‚ INSTRUMENT
            #16..#25 β”‚
(Dynamic labels, β”‚ β˜… THE BLACK SWAN
          status badges) β”‚ (Self-measuring ASCII
β”‚ that acts as a gauge)
                        LIVE / COMPUTED
  • The Clump: Almost all 30 ideas treat ASCII art as a billboardβ€”something decorative printed after a decision is made.
  • The Imported Axis (from Optical Metrology β€” The Vernier Calliper / Reticle): In optical instruments, the markings on the glass aren’t decoration; the markings ARE the ruler. On a Vernier scale, two slightly offset grids make a 1-unit error jump out to the naked eye immediately without counting ticks.

PASS 3 β€” Generate to Order into the Hole (The Black Swan)

β˜… The Black Swan: The Vernier Keyhole Frame (Self- Indexing ASCII Art) When you center-crop a 16:9 terminal into a 9:16 vertical keyhole for YouTube Shorts, you have an invisible 40-column β€œsafe zone” (columns 20..60). If we put subtle tick-marks (┬ / β”΄) at the exact keyhole boundaries on the top/bottom thought bubble or panel frame, the art becomes its own optical reticle:

  1. For OBS / video editing, you align your crop filter directly to the ⌜ / ⌝ ticks.
  2. For an LLM editing the art in prompt_foo.py, those ticks act as column anchors at known indices (col 20 and col 60), reducing a 40-space counting problem into a 4-space offset from the nearest tick!
                    βŒœβ”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”¬β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€βŒ
( Built on a "No Problem" framework )
                    βŒžβ”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”΄β”€β”¬β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€β”€βŒŸ
                                          O /) __
                                           o /)\__// / \
                                         ___(/_ 0 0 | |
                                       *(    ==(_T_)==NPvg|
                                         \ ) ""\ | |
                                          |__>-\_>_> \__/

Look at that: the center tick β”΄ sits at column 40 (*( is at 39–40), the ┬ next to it points straight down at O (column 42), and the right bracket ⌝ sits at column 60 (just outside NPvg| at column 58). Neither human nor AI ever has to count 42 leading spaces from column 0 againβ€”you just drop the rabbit’s ear 2 spaces right of the center tick!

Ignition: often β€œexit”, β€œnix develop”. Instructions may vary.

No ignition required, but the new rabbit should be showing on Honeybot Storytime when the white rabbit pops up now.

4: PROMPT:

Verify the final AFTER receipts confirming that all .drift and reseal checks are gone from imports/ascii_displays.py, release.py, scripts/boot_menu.py, and remotes/honeybot/scripts/test_forest.py, and let’s wrap the article with a closing synthesis of what we proved today.

5: DELIVERABLE:

What done looks like is a more clear chasing the rabbit metaphor. So what done looks like is what the beginning looks like!

Hop off the ride. This ride’s stated goal is reached – dismount. This is the NOTARY BEAT: the ride ends here, is witnessed here, and is sealed here. Answer all seven beats, briefly:

  1. TL;DR: a short, dry, neutral abstract for the TOP of the published article – written for an unfamiliar reader or AI summarizer who has never seen this system. No hype, no insider handles unexplained.
  2. VERIFY: restate the goal from the top of this article and confirm (or deny) it was met, citing THIS compile’s receipts, not memory. Name any ignition this ride required that never fired – an AFTER tap taken without one is a stale BEFORE wearing the AFTER’s label.
  3. BANK: name everything that graduates – rule, earmark, todo, pin – as SEARCH/REPLACE patch cars against raw source present in THIS context (Target line inside the fence, one car per commit story), deletions included. A β€˜paste-ready’ line with no Target and no SEARCH anchor is not banked; it is a hand edit the operator will not make. These BANK cars are the ONLY patches a dismount emits.
  4. DANGLING: what carries forward unbanked? One line each, no essays.
  5. SEED: the context.txt lines (and TODO_SLUGS if narrative context is needed) for the next ride’s first compile.
  6. CLOSING: a closing summary for the BOTTOM of the article – the final take-away, tied to the book’s larger arc where it fits naturally, never forced. Storytelling over inventory.
  7. NOTARIZE: read the exact Deed line from THIS compile’s final QA ARCHIVE SEAL footer, outside the payload, not a quoted older footer or a newest-file guess. It names the input archive, not this later response or the generated Jekyll post. State verification separately: only a verifier receipt naming that archive supports a verified claim; otherwise say not independently verified here. Count this Manifest’s live-command receipts, including failures. Quote only recorded digests, sizes and dates, naming their source; filesystem mtime and fixed ZIP dates are not command timestamps. Do not demand absent wc -c or dated-receipt fields. If the footer is missing, say so; otherwise close with its exact Deed line.

FINALITY: after beat 6, this discussion is CLOSED. Emit NO five-car train, NO probes, NO patches beyond the BANK cars of beat 2, and NO next-turn prompt beyond the SEED lines in beat 4. Any reader or model encountering this article later should treat it as a finished, notarized document – an archive entry, not an open thread.

Gemini 4 Argon High: Context verified.

1. VERIFY

The goals stated at the top of this ride were:

  1. Remove the ASCII art CRC32 checksum system (FIGURATE_LEDGER, seal_readings, reseal_ledger, --reseal, and .drift checks) across the repository.
  2. Explain and qualify why inline ASCII art and pre-rendered ASCII UML (plantuml -tutxt) outperform raw Mermaid syntax for LLM spatial comprehension, how BPE tokenization and browser clipboard transport affect whitespace alignment, and when attached bitmaps are preferable.
  3. Update _figurate_white_rabbit in imports/ascii_displays.py by blanking the left and right bullet-point text and superimposing NPvg over QA (Pv replacing QA, N to the left, g to the right) so the rabbit and hole remain centered for a vertical keyhole slice.

All three goals are met and witnessed by THIS compile’s live receipts:

  • Live Receipt 1 (! .venv/bin/python -c "from imports.ascii_displays import figurate; r = figurate('white_rabbit'); print(r.name, hasattr(r, 'drift')); print(r.ai)"): Prints white_rabbit Falseβ€”confirming the drift attribute is removed from FigurateResultβ€”followed by the updated keyhole White Rabbit with blanked side text and *( ==(_T_)==NPvg| aligned plumb at column 58.
  • Live Receipt 2 (! rg -n "drift|reseal|FIGURATE_LEDGER" imports/ascii_displays.py release.py scripts/boot_menu.py remotes/honeybot/scripts/test_forest.py || true): Confirms zero remaining executable references to .drift, reseal, or FIGURATE_LEDGER across all four files (matching only three legacy docstring lines and three ordinary English uses of the word β€œdrift”).
  • Git Diff Telemetry (Summary / Telemetry): Confirms the four-file cleanup landed in commit f1259a1 (4 files changed, 7 insertions(+), 20 deletions(-)), following the earlier removals in 9b34e22, 83f9c8f, 6d7918c, 255ffdd, ef299ec, and 5f9d59f, with Ruff exit 0 (clean).
  • Ignition Status: The shell ignition (exit followed by ndq) was executed after the flake.nix edit to drop the reseal shell function from the active environment; the Python module edits required no local ignition because the ! probes import imports/ascii_displays.py at call time. Syncing the updated imports/ascii_displays.py to the remote Honeybot display server (~/www/mikelev.in/scripts/) will fire on the next publish or ./nixops.sh run.

3. DANGLING

  • White Rabbit Thought Bubble & Panel Title (imports/ascii_displays.py): _figurate_white_rabbit still carries the qamy.ai thought bubble (( Do you put your name on it because Claude said so? )) and Panel title (QA My AI (qamy.ai): Is what Claude said True?); ready to update or make dynamic via context on a future ride.
  • Vernier Keyhole Reticle & Multi-Line FIRST DIVERGENCE (imports/ascii_displays.py, apply.py): The 40-column (20..60) tick-mark reticle and teaching apply.py to report all divergent lines in a window rather than breaking on the first remain optional enhancements from the 30-and-3 exercise.
  • Historical Router & Glossary Notes (foo_files.py:1796, GLOSSARY.md:3739): Historical ledger entries describing THE RESEAL and FIGURATE_LEDGER_EXTRUDE_BOTTOM remain in foo_files.py and GLOSSARY.md for the next forget / router-curation pass.
  • Honeybot Remote Sync (nixops.sh / publish): imports/ascii_displays.py on Honeybot updates when publish or ./nixops.sh next runs rsync.

5. CLOSING

There is a quiet irony in how this ride unfolded. We set out to tear down the CRC32 wax seals on the ASCII artβ€”defenses built during the agentic-IDE era when an AI held the action key and mangled drawings in the dark as a side effect of pulling bespoke code back toward the training centroid. Along the way, we asked the model to perform the exact kind of edit those checksums were built to catch: blanking two columns of prose on either side of a hand-drawn ASCII White Rabbit while slipping the four letters NPvg into a five-column rabbit hole.

On the first two attempts, the model’s [[[SEARCH]]] block drifted by a single spaceβ€”caught between browser-clipboard \xa0 token splintering and the 1D left-to-right arithmetic of BPE subwords. In an agentic IDE, that one-space error would have been written straight to disk, shifting the right wall of the rabbit hole out of alignment. Under the AI-EDIT METHOD, nothing broke. apply.py refused the block, printed the FIRST DIVERGENCE receipt naming the exact line and byte, and held the door shut until the column arithmetic (36 + 3 = 39, landing NPvg| dead plumb at column 58) was exact. You don’t need a checksum to tell you whether a painting was vandalized after the fact when the action key hangs on the wall beside apply.py.

Book Analysis

Ai Editorial Take

What stands out beyond the tokenizer math and the Β  clipboard diagnostic is an unstated asymmetry between reading and writing in transformer attention: a transformer reads an entire 2D ASCII diagram in parallel during the prefill pass, where every token can attend to characters directly above and below it at fixed stride intervals, effectively giving the model a 2D spatialretina on input. On output, however, autoregressive decoding collapses that parallel 2D retina into a single-file 1D bottleneck where each committed space token permanently shifts the column index of every character yet to be emitted on that row. In other words, LLMs are native 2D readers trapped inside a 1D typewriterβ€”which explains why feeding plantuml -tutxt into a prompt yields such sharp architectural comprehension even while editing a five-char rabbit hole back out requires apply.py to act as an external mechanical escapement.

    • Rationale: Names the three concrete anchors of the session: the 9:16 keyhole White Rabbit edit, the retirement of the CRC32 FIGURATE_LEDGER wax seals, and the BPE / Β  column-geometry diagnosis.
  • Title Option: When the Canary Retires: Ripping Out CRC32 Art Seals in the NPvg Era
    • Filename: when-the-canary-retires-crc32-art-seals-npvg.md
    • Rationale: Highlights the architectural realization that ASCII art checksums were a canary for unsupervised agentic file writes, no longer needed once apply.py guards every byte.
  • Title Option: Shift-R Versus 1D Tokens: Why LLMs Read ASCII Art Better Than They Edit It
    • Filename: shift-r-vs-1d-tokens-llm-ascii-art-geometry.md
    • Rationale: Focuses on the contrast between Neovim’s 2D mutable character grid (Shift+R) and a transformer’s left-to-right BPE token stream across browser clipboards.
  • Title Option: Three Tries at the Rabbit Hole: Exact-Match Interlocks and Vernier Reticles
    • Filename: three-tries-at-the-rabbit-hole-vernier-reticles.md
    • Rationale: Captures the narrative arc of the three-turn FIRST DIVERGENCE repair loop and the Black Swan Vernier reticle idea from the 30-and-3 exercise.

Content Potential And Polish

  • Core Strengths:
    • Provides an immediately falsifiable, live-captured demonstration of why strict search-and-replace interlocks prevent silent spatial corruption when an LLM edits multi-column ASCII art.
    • Clearly distinguishes between reading 2D topology (where pre-laid-out plantuml -tutxt and ASCII grids beat unrendered Mermaid edge lists) and writing 2D topology (where BPE subword widths and browser \xa0 alternation trip up 1D token generation).
    • Documents the full lifecycle of a defensive abstractionβ€”showing when a guard (FIGURATE_LEDGER) was necessary under agentic IDE write loops and how to cleanly delete 100+ lines of code once an upstream architectural boundary renders it obsolete.
  • Suggestions For Polish:
    • Consider adding a brief visual callout showing how Shift+R (Replace mode) in Neovim overwrites characters in place without shifting trailing columns, contrasting it with standard insert mode for readers less familiar with modal editors.
    • When implementing the multi-line FIRST DIVERGENCE reporting idea (#27 from the 30-and-3 exercise), link back to this entry’s Turn 1 and Turn 2 logs as the motivating test case.

Next Step Prompts

  • Inspect apply.py around the FIRST DIVERGENCE diagnostic loop and propose a minimal patch so that when a [[[SEARCH]]] block fails on whitespace or character alignment, it prints up to 5 divergent lines within the candidate window rather than breaking on the first mismatch.
  • Review _figurate_white_rabbit in imports/ascii_displays.py alongside foo_files.py and GLOSSARY.md to update the legacy qamy.ai thought bubble and Panel title for the NPvg era and prune the retired FIGURATE_LEDGER glossary notes.
