It’s this one particular extinction event layer of detritus of the Holocene we’re excavating to make Honeybots with a human actuated Software Von Neumann Probe, more or less. Something like that, right?

Something like that — and the Dune mechanics are worth getting exact, because your metaphor is load-bearing and it maps cleaner than you’re letting on.
