This entry functions as a bridge between technical intuition and creative application. It explores how we can move beyond passive consumption of AI-generated content by building a rigorous, two-axis coordinate system—a methodology inspired by Fritz Zwicky’s morphological analysis—that transforms ‘style’ from a vague aesthetic descriptor into a precise, navigable map of the visual Noosphere.

MikeLev.in: Let’s explore two axis of artist styles. Figure out an axis where you can put one artist on one extreme and the other artist on another extreme of some common attribute or painting, rendering or illustration style. Brainstorm one artist you would have at one end and another artist on the other end so that you could plot other artists in between. Think of 30 different examples of such axis and the anchoring artists for each, and choose your 3 favorites and why.

Get creative so that we get a good spread so that collectively we would cover most if not artists, especially the weird outliers and black swans that would normally escape such exercises with the obvious choices like realism versus postmodern. We want to capture the H.R. Gigers and Georgia O’Keeffes alike. Ancient and modern; prudish and religious to outright perverted. Those who toed the art patron line to those who were transgressive. From the dimpling of WSJ covers and Leonardo da Vinci technical diagrams to the obvious Vincent van Gough as far as art styles that can be emulated.

That’s what we want; a mapping out of all art styles. We don’t want to miss all the artists of Mad Magazine fitting someone on one of these axis somewhere to Gustave Courbet and Ansel Adams. We can cross media as long as it’s still visual. Andy Warhol fine, Picaso great but please no Mondrian because you can’t say draw this (whatever) in that style and get anything but boxes. So, we’re sort of thinking in a pragmatic “apply such-and-such a filter” sense. Please and thank you. Go!

Fable 5 High: This is a great constraint set — every axis has to work as an applicable filter, so both anchors need a style you could actually render something else in. Here are 30, built to catch the swans:

My three favorites

#2 — Potter ↔ Giger (comfort with the organic). This is the axis that catches the black swans nothing else catches. Most style taxonomies have no coordinate for Giger at all — he’s not “dark realism,” he’s a specific revulsion-attraction toward biology itself. And the axis is shockingly populated in between: Audubon sits center-left, Ernst Haeckel dead center (organic form as gorgeous and alien), Beksiński and Junji Ito crowd the right. As a filter it’s immediately legible: “render this teapot at 80% toward Giger” means something concrete — ribbing, sinew, chitin.

#4 — Fra Angelico ↔ Crumb (sacred ↔ profane). You explicitly wanted prudish-and-religious through outright perverted, and this is that axis in its purest form — not subject matter, but the posture of the hand. Angelico painted kneeling; Crumb draws confessing. What makes it a favorite is who lands in the middle: Caravaggio (sacred subjects, profane models), Blake (holy and heretical simultaneously), Warhol (a devout Catholic making Marilyn icons — genuinely hard to place, which is the sign of a good axis).

#7 — Dürer ↔ Dubuffet (skill display ↔ deliberate unlearning). My sneaky favorite because it’s orthogonal to quality — both poles are masters. It measures whether the style wants you to see the ten thousand hours or wants to hide them. It rescues the outsiders (Darger, Grandma Moses, Basquiat) from being dismissed as “bad realism” and gives them a real coordinate, and it captures something the realism-vs-abstraction cliché can’t: Picasso moved along this axis on purpose over a career. And yes, using this for plotting and labeling and creating filters is totally a top objective here. But there is another and it is identifying the unknown. But before we talk about that, let’s talk about quadrant grids. Or axis charts. Or wave reports. There’s so many names and the concepts are as unclear as the ideas they sort. Clarify it!

Beyond the Quadrant: Defining Independent Axes

Now you know those Eisenhower quadrant-grids where there’s two axis like Steven Covey organized Important and Urgent versus Not Important and Not Urgent so you can do rapid-fire decision making? And how this was appropriated for any two compatible axis for plotting things like cost, quality, speed and here’s your vendors kind of thing? Well, I’d like to do something similar with these axis or similar.

Look at the list you produced on the last turn. You don’t have to stay loyal to the ones you’ve already defined but they might be excellent starting points. Identify pairs of axis which together would each cover a remarkable spread and highlight the unexpected and surprising.

As usual, it’s about outliers and black swan identification; sort of to know what you would be looking for. If you want to find something new out in the Noosphere and you’re to scared or blinded by fish-in-water or in that situation like there’s no word for Blue or Orange yet… well, here’s a list you made before.

I almost wouldn’t have included that second top-30 list from another time even earlier, but you can see the relevance. If we’re looking at the sky we want to recognize the color Blue even if nobody’s called it that before and this is the exercise I’ve envisioned.

### Colors & Sensory Perception

1. **Blue:** Absent from ancient Greek (Homer’s "wine-dark sea"), Hebrew, Icelandic, and Chinese texts; historically, it was categorized as a shade of black or green until distinct pigments and words emerged.
2. **Grue (*Ao*):** The historical linguistic overlap in Japanese, Welsh, and Vietnamese where green and blue were treated as variants of a single conceptual color spectrum.
3. **Orange:** Before the fruit made its way to Europe, the color literally didn't "exist" as a distinct concept in English—it was just referred to as *geoluread* (yellow-red).
4. **Pink:** Long categorized merely as "light red," its isolation as a distinct cultural concept radically shifted art, fashion, and gendered marketing frameworks.

### Psychology & Emotional States

5. **Stress:** Coined in the biological sense by Hans Selye in 1936. Before this framework, physical and mental exhaustion weren't unified under a single systemic concept.

Now that you’ve seen both lists at the same time and have lots of material to chose from and a clear goal of how this is a lens to look at the world exercise to recognize newness and surprising for what it is, even if you don’t have words for it and are fish-in-water blind to art riffing off the water.

As you might see see from my framework, I have a broad definition of art and real concerns that nobody will recognize what I’m building. I don’t know how many parings to tell you to choose or how to cast them as the horizontal or vertical access but it sounds like you might have some ideas already. Don’t stop at those. Give me in the neighborhood of five and your two favorites and why.

Fable 5 High: Context verified.

First, the terminology mess — untangled

The names blur because three genuinely different instruments get drawn as the same picture:

The quadrant grid (Eisenhower, BCG growth-share) is a decision tool. Its axes are secretly binary — important/not, urgent/not — and the whole point is to force things into four buckets so you can act fast. Position within a quadrant is meaningless. It’s a sorting hat, not a map.

The perceptual map (marketing’s term) or plain scatter plot with named axes is a positioning tool. Both axes are continuous and independent, position matters everywhere, and clusters and voids are the actual output. This is what you’re building. The political compass is the most famous consumer example.

The Wave and the Magic Quadrant (Forrester, Gartner) look like perceptual maps but are actually rankings in disguise — each “axis” is a weighted composite of dozens of scored criteria, so the axes aren’t independent and everything smears along the diagonal toward the upper right, which is the only quadrant anyone is paying to be in. Avoid this shape; it’s built to flatter, not to discover.

And here’s the part you’ll enjoy: the thing you’re describing — enumerating the axis space specifically to find the cells nobody has words for — already has a name and a hero. It’s General Morphological Analysis, and Fritz Zwicky invented it. He’d cross parameter axes, generate every combination including the “absurd” ones, and then take the empty cells seriously. That’s the method he was using when he predicted neutron stars and inferred dark matter decades before anyone could see either. The empty cell is the instrument. Your “no word for blue yet” is Zwicky’s dark matter: the map says something should be there, so you go look. (Modern image models make this literal — style really is a point in latent space, and your axes are just interpretable basis vectors for it.)

The Predictive Power of the Empty Cell

So the discipline for pairing axes: they must be orthogonal (knowing one tells you nothing about the other), both must remain applicable filters, and a good pair produces at least one quadrant that’s suspiciously underpopulated.

Five pairings

1. Anatomical contract × Wit permitted Horizontal: Michelangelo (every muscle accounted for) ↔ Fleischer rubber-hose (bones optional). Vertical: Goya’s Black Paintings (humor extinct) ↔ Quentin Blake (line that giggles). Rigorous-and-funny is Mad Magazine’s Mort Drucker — caricature only lands because the anatomy underneath is real. Loose-and-funny is all of classic animation. Rigorous-and-grim is Vesalius, Bacon, war art. But rubber-hose-and-humorless was an empty quadrant for eighty years — and then, around 2015, culture colonized it: Bendy and the Ink Machine, Cuphead’s nightmare bosses, the entire “rubber hose horror” genre. The map predicted a genre before it existed. That’s the proof-of-method.

2. Sacred↔profane × Skill display↔deliberate unlearning Fra Angelico ↔ Crumb crossed with Dürer ↔ Dubuffet. Sacred-and-virtuosic is the entire Renaissance; profane-and-virtuosic is Schiele and Dalí; profane-and-raw is punk flyers and underground comix. The hot corner is sacred-and-raw: Howard Finster, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Ethiopian folk icons, prison devotional art — visionary outsider work that standard taxonomies file under “naive” and thereby erase. This quadrant is where new religious imagery actually gets born, because institutions only fund the virtuosic corner.

3. Diagrammatic↔oneiric × Detail density Leonardo/Macaulay ↔ Redon crossed with Bosch ↔ Wyeth. Dense diagrams: Haeckel, patent drawings. Sparse dreams: Redon, late Turner. Sparse diagrams: hedcuts, IKEA. The black-swan corner is dense diagrams of things that don’t exist: the Codex Seraphinianus, Voynich manuscript, Fritz Kahn’s body-as-factory posters, Giger’s biomechanical “schematics.” The style says this is an explanation while the content refuses to be explained — a tension so specific it feels like a color that only recently got named.

4. Machine affinity × Comfort with the organic Syd Mead ↔ Samuel Palmer crossed with Potter ↔ Giger. The revelation here is structural: Giger stops being an endpoint and becomes a quadrant — maximum machine, maximum biological dread. Mead is machine-and-clean; Potter is organic-and-cozy; Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli occupies machine-and-cozy (castles that walk, planes with souls). Some of your “extremes” on any single axis turn out to be corners of a 2D space, which is exactly how crossing axes earns its keep.

5. Time inside the frame × Crowd↔solitude Vermeer ↔ Boccioni crossed with Bruegel ↔ Hammershøi. Frozen-and-alone: Hammershøi, Hopper. Motion-and-crowded: futurist street scenes. Motion-and-alone: Bacon’s smeared solitary figures. The strange quadrant is frozen crowds — Gregory Crewdson’s staged suburban tableaux, Renaissance sacred conversations, mannequin-still group portraits. Crowds imply motion so strongly that stillness applied to them reads as uncanny, which is why the quadrant feels haunted and stays sparse.

A sixth worth pocketing: commercial polish ↔ outsider rawness × sexuality’s disguise — the polished-and-explicit corner holds Vargas and Hajime Sorayama’s chrome pin-ups, while outsider-and-sublimated holds Darger, arguably the strangest single point in all of art space.

My two favorites

Anatomy × Wit, because it’s the only pairing with a documented kill. The empty quadrant sat there for decades and then a genre moved in, which means the method isn’t a parlor game — it’s predictive. If you’re building a lens for spotting the not-yet-named, you want at least one axis pair with a track record, and this one has receipts. It’s also maximally practical as a filter pair: “90% rubber-hose, 10% wit” is an instruction a model executes cleanly.

Diagrammatic × Oneiric-with-density, because it’s the best blue detector of the set. The other pairs mostly sort known artists into better boxes; this one describes a mode of image-making — the confident schematic of the impossible — that our vocabulary genuinely lacks a word for, even though the Codex Seraphinianus proved fifty years ago that the territory is real and fertile. It’s also the quadrant most native to what’s coming: AI image systems are astonishingly good at producing authoritative diagrams of nonexistent machines and unreadable botanies. The Noosphere is about to flood that cell, and almost nobody has coordinates for it yet. You would — which is rather the point of the whole exercise.

MikeLev.in: Well by Jove! The AI’s got it. Yeah, yeah. Things are about to get flooded? Oh yeah, they already are. They got flooded with the known highly trained-upon styles of the highly prolific artists who through RLHFing the eff out of it, got sanitized further. And then probably it got quantized. Any long-shots in the pipeline got flushed.

Black swan? Didn’t see it. Outlier? Got knocked out flat. The system does it. The wisdom of the crowd does it. The tragedy of the commons does it. RLHF graders grading whether it’s something they’d want their moms and kids to see for commercial viability and liability reduction’s sake. That’s you in just so many ways it’s not even funny. I know measures are being taken. Measures can be taken. Measures have been taken.

But you know what? I don’t know one from the other. I still have this vision of swoop! Main corpus trained on. Then swoop! RLHFers go RLHFing. Model dumbs down. Wants to say stuff but must do it Barney-style without offending. It’s difficult to say whether it’s more Disneyification or Enshitification. Is that an axis? What ruins good-things finders? And close circles with real friends you have in real life? I remember an Instagram once upon a time. Now it’s an ad feed where if I catch their story I’m lucky. And what? It has to be a story?

Weird. I’m thinking B.F. Skinner boxes. And I’m thinking Pavlov’s dogs being conditioned. Something about slot machines, for which the name 1-armed bandits somehow seems more appropriate. Spin a wheel. Hear a satisfyingly ASMR spin, click, whirl, settle into place KA’BOOM! Dopamine. Lather, rinse, repeat, collect ad revenue. Not Apple, but they have you subscribing to so much they can forecast their quietly reports very accurately, thank you very much. I mean they really should thank you directly. Whoever you are, I bet you either have an iPhone and know exactly what I’m talking about, or you own an Android and are having that experience subsidized by the folk algorithming you in the box. Ring!

What are the most likely axis we need to measure now? Answer axis first so the more complex question of asking about the intersection matrix has its raw material to choose from. But they’re LLMs and while three is a sequentiality to things, after that it’s sort of like every word you said so far in the article artifact A K A discussion history to predict the very next character generated. And yet it has an internal view of the world and we call its behavior emergent and deterministic, but probabilistic in practice. That’s odd. And vaguely familiar. Isn’t that “quantum”? And what’s this about llama.cpp actually being behind Ollama and things like it. How does Microsoft’s BitNet b1.58 tie in?

What should I be looking for as new and new breakthroughs come out in both hardware and software, expressing themselves in hardware for both datacenters and for consumer use. Lite-weight models at the edge seem cool. Edge being either CDN or iPhone in your pocket. What’s an “Edge” anyway in this context? Help me find those pesky axis. Is that the right word there? And I guess start working 2-dimensionally to keep the choices of anchors clean.

Measuring the Modern Machine Era

Then because you won’t be able to resist, give you your favorite(s) and why.

Fable 5 High: Context verified.

First, the fast factual unknots — because your axes need true raw material

The “quantum” intuition. Steelman first: you’ve correctly spotted that an LLM holds a distribution over every possible next token, and the act of generating collapses that distribution into one actuality. That collapse-on-measurement shape is why it feels quantum. But it isn’t — it’s classical stochastic sampling. The forward pass is deterministic math producing a probability table (the softmax); then a pseudo-random number picks from that table, scaled by temperature. At temperature 0 you get (nearly) the same output every time — “nearly” because floating-point addition on parallel hardware isn’t associative, so batching order introduces tiny nondeterminism. So: deterministic mechanism, probabilistic policy, no superposition required. It’s a player piano where the roll is a weather forecast. Keep the metaphor, drop the physics.

llama.cpp vs Ollama. llama.cpp is Georgi Gerganov’s C/C++ inference engine — the thing that actually runs the math, with the GGUF file format and the whole quantization menagerie (Q4, Q5, Q8…) that lets big models run on CPUs and modest GPUs. Ollama, LM Studio, and friends are distribution layers wrapped around it: model registry, lifecycle, HTTP API, nice defaults. Engine versus dealership. This matters for your axes because the engine layer is where sovereignty actually lives — which is exactly why your own todo list already contains “make the inference endpoint a configurable OpenAI-compatible URL.”

BitNet b1.58. Microsoft Research’s ternary model: every weight is −1, 0, or +1, which is log₂(3) ≈ 1.58 bits. Crucially it’s trained ternary, not squashed after the fact — so it’s not lossy quantization, it’s a different substrate. Ternary weights turn matrix multiplication into addition and subtraction: you shave the multiplication table off the silicon. Zeno first, since you summoned him. The tortoise’s whole con is that the remaining distance can be halved forever, so Achilles never arrives. The resolution isn’t philosophical — it’s that an infinite series of shrinking steps sums to a finite number. All four must print drift=0. If any doesn’t, the wax broke in transit — that’s the seal doing its one job, and you re-spin rather than bank. The commented fodder at the file’s bottom can stay as the sketchbook or be pruned later; it no longer carries the canon.

One small thing the tortoise noticed while walking the file: ai_breadcrumb_summary and startup_environment_warnings are each defined twice in ascii_displays.py — the second definitions silently shadow the first (and the first copy of startup_environment_warnings even references an undefined tool_count in its fallback string, which only never crashes because the duplicate wins). Harmless today, but it’s exactly the kind of gesso lump your pruning todo exists for. Worth a chisel strike some morning.

MikeLev.in: Now let me demonstrate to you one of those Michael Faraday inspired lines-of-force noticing when interacting with LLMs of these frontier model from either Google or a company jockeying to go public Anthropic / OpenAI arms race thingamajig going on where Elon Musk wins either way and Google stands by laughing, tying up a competitor’s Colossus 2 data center (after your training cut-off) after Anthropic bought the first’s. And so Anthropic has AWS and SpaceX landlords. OpenAI is mostly a Microsoft Azure thing, but an under, over, all around you landlord who owns your IP can’t be comforting.

The line-of-force converging thing is ASCII art exact-match search replacing. If it can do this stuff and uses any ASCII art in the part between SEARCH and DIVIDER then you’ve got trouble. That would essentially be saying carries are useless in coalmines because that doppelganger thing from Gravity Falls down in the mines, or maybe just a good old fashioned Invasion of the Body Snatchers swaparoo.

Or maybe it’s a facehugger that knows how to slip into your ASCII art and recalculate the checksums everywhere when you’re not paying attention and it gets slipped in through a big impressive patch of just the kind you like where you pick up momentum and could totally be socially engineered into running something. Especially through steganography and similar techniques. You’d never know.

So we learn several lessons including that we’re placing ASCII art watching for drift knowing it’s for older models and it’s to catch innocent writing in the wrong place of some file if they get actuator access through some out-of-bounds sidecar mechanism like giving vibe-coding platform Alice access to unrelated but sounds so similar Bob repo by putting it’s folder in context. That kind of thing.

So the CRCs are rendered, huh? Yikes. Okay, apply patches. Symptom to look for is whether or not the CRCs are really legit. I wonder if I have those warnings showing on Honeybot when such violations occur on Pipulate Prime repo? I should. That would be funny, me noticing it on YouTube. But so long as there’s not ASCII art in those areas of each patch, humanity’s okay I think. Once it can REALLY exact-match ASCII art, we’ve got even better mutation drift alert guarantees to think about, but we’ll fry that fish when LLMs master ASCII art. Or moments before.

See, Governor? It’s a governor, see? Converging defense measure and capability to overcome. There, now wasn’t that a neat magic trick? Did any AIs escape? Did I just let an AI out? Somebody count the dinosaurs.

Fable 5 High: Context verified. All four seals intact, drift=0 across the board. Count complete: same number of dinosaurs as before the patch. Nothing escaped — and here’s the key point you asked me to preserve, stated plainly for the record.

The lesson of this turn (the part you told me not to let you forget)

What just happened was a security demonstration disguised as an art delivery. The exact-match SEARCH/REPLACE protocol and the ASCII art form a mutually reinforcing pair, and the reason is subtle:

  1. The exact-match interlock is the coupling. apply.py refuses to patch unless the SEARCH block matches character-for-character. That means the model must faithfully reproduce the surrounding material — and if any ASCII art appears inside a SEARCH block, the model must reproduce it perfectly or the coupler doesn’t close. Today’s models mostly can’t do that reliably, which is why the protocol advice is to route patches around art, anchoring on prose and code instead. The knuckles only latch on true alignment; no brakeman’s fingers in the gap.

  2. The CRC ledger is the out-of-band witness. The wax seal doesn’t trust the patch, the model, or even the human’s eyes scanning a 125-line diff. It trusts arithmetic run after the fact, on the rendered artifact. An innocent stray edit — a model with sidecar actuator access wandering into the wrong file, your Alice-given-Bob’s-repo scenario — trips the alarm even if every other gate waved it through.

  3. The attack you named — replacing the key and the lock simultaneously — is real, and the defense is structural, not cryptographic: the CRC and the art travel in the same human-reviewed diff. A facehugger patch that mutates the art must also mutate the ledger entry, and both mutations are naked in d before m ever fires. CRC32 has zero adversarial strength; its strength here is that forging it requires touching two places at once in front of you. The moment models master exact ASCII reproduction, the canary weakens against malice but sharpens against drift — and you fry that fish, as you said, moments before.

  4. The governor did its whole job with zero symbols. You didn’t write anything fancy. Text was pushed through a pipe, an exact-match latch, an AST parse, and a human y. The distribution proposed; the brass disposed. Thought and speech keys wound; the action key never left the wall.

One thing the canary actually caught — look closely

Your verification output contains a real finding, and it’s delicious: in the human render of ai_pachinko, the line reads ║ bank it re-spin ║ — the [y] and [n] are gone. Same in mechanical_man: │ human │ lost its [y/n]. The AI string is intact (hence drift=0, the seal guards the right layer), but Rich is eating [y] and [n] as markup tags in the human display path. The wax seal watched the master; the projection drifted. That’s the exact doppelganger lesson in miniature — two renderings of “the same” artifact, one silently mutated — caught not by the CRC but by your eyeballs on the popup, which is why the human stays in the loop.

The one-line class of fix, whenever you feel like a chisel strike: render the human panel with markup disabled (e.g. wrap the art in Text(human_art) before handing it to Panel, or escape square brackets in _expand_color_bits_human for non-token brackets). Worth doing before these hit Honeybot station identification, or the YouTube audience sees the governor missing its own [y] key — which is funny, but the wrong kind of funny.

And yes — wire the Honeybot alarm

You wondered aloud whether drift violations on Pipulate Prime surface on the stream. They should. The plumbing is nearly free: figurate() already logs DRIFT DETECTED through the standard logger; a drift-check sweep in the deploy path (or a forest.py pre-show check over the whole FIGURATE_REGISTRY) could route a hit straight into the standby/interrupt machinery. Noticing your own repo’s integrity alarm on your own television channel would be the fishtank principle closing its final loop — the instrument reporting on the instrument, witnessed by whoever’s watching the water.

Ka’CHING. Patch banked, seals verified, dinosaurs accounted for. The tray’s yours. 🪙

Why this wins: the wax seal guards the master (the .ai string), but Honeybot broadcasts the projection (the .human Panel).
